MAGICAL MENAGERIE

| The cobblestone streets of Diagon Alley bustled with activity as Mamori and his father emerged from the Leaky Cauldron. Mamori did not stop to take in any sight but instead instantly grabbed his father's arm and hurried him into a shop whose window was full of various magical creatures. Glittering letters on the sign above the door said "Magical Menagerie."

"Hey, Mamori, don't we have to get your wand first?" his father asked with a slight, resigned smile at his son's zeal.

But Mamori was already pushing open the door, causing a small bell to tinkle. The shop was alive with animal sounds ᅳ hoots, squeaks, and croaks. An elderly couple with white hair greeted them from behind the counter.

"Welcome!" said the old lady brightly. "You here for a Hogwarts buddy?"

Mamori nodded, eyes excitedly flitting from cage to cage. The options were overwhelming: vibrant toads, elegant cats, grand owls, and some animals he could not even name. He felt a little lost for a second with so many varieties around.

"Hmmm, I'm not sure what to get," Mamori admitted, glancing up at his father.

His father's expression remained neutral, but his eyes were keen. "Take your time, son. But remember we have other stops to make."

Mamori heard and understood the unspoken message. He needed to choose, and soon. As he browsed, a rather peculiar thought struck him. "Excuse me," he called to the shopkeeper, "which animal here lives the longest? I want a friend who will be with me for a very, very long time."

His father raised an eyebrow, but said nothing, watching Mamori intently.

The old man behind the counter chuckled warmly. "Ah, looking for a lifelong companion, are you? Well, in that case you might want to consider an owl. Both the Great Horned Owl and the Indian Eagle Owl have impressive lifespans. Living into their twenties is not unusual for them, with some having even reached over thirty years with proper care. "

Mamori's eyes widened with glee. "Thirty years old? That's perfect! Can I take a look at them?"

The couple took Mamori and his father to the owl section. Therein, at first sight, Mamori observed an extraordinarily beautiful Great Horned Owl; its deep brown feathers and striking yellow eyes portrayed something different from the rest ᅳ pride blended with intelligence in its glance.

"I'll take this one," said Mamori firmly.

Just then, while he was paying his respects to the bird through his silence, one of the Rakugos that his father had repeated to him many times before surfaced in his mind. This time, it was about a boy with an extremely long name, filled with parts wishing him a long and prosperous life. Formerly a source of uncontrollable laughter for Mamori, now, standing before his new companion, it struck him differently.

The idea formed quickly in his mind. As an owl that was to stay with him through the years, what better name than that which derives from a story symbolizing endless life? It would be a perfect wish for long-lasting friendship.

With a bit of mischief in his eyes, Mamori launched into it, rattling off, “I'll name you Jugemu Jugemu Gokonosurikire Kaijarisuigyo no Suigyomatsu Unraimatsu Furaimatsu...” He sped through the names, barely pausing for breath.

Almost reaching the half-way point of his twister, Mamori's father smiled politely but was obviously getting impatient and gently laid his hand on his son's shoulder. “Mamori,” his father said, still smiling but with a firmness in his tone, “let's not overcomplicate things. If you give him such a long name, it'll be impossible to call him when you need to.”

Mamori halted mid-sentence, realizing his father wasn't going to let him continue. He hesitated, torn between his playful idea and the practicality of it. After a moment's silence, he responded by merely giving the first and last names from the Rakugo.

"Okay, Jugemu Chōsuke it is."
