"You're sure you want another pet? Delgado isn't good enough?" Delaney's dad asks her, opening the door to the menagerie for her. She nods as she passes through the door, thanking her dad briefly as they enter. "I'm sure. He can't really come with me," Delaney adds, a bit bittersweet as she remembers she'll have to leave behind her dog, Delgado, at home with her family. However, that meant her mom's permission to purchase a new pet to keep her company while she's away.

Together, they surveyed the available animals kept in the menagerie. An owl? No, birds were annoying and pooped everywhere, or at least that's what her mom had always told her. Then passed the snakes, frogs, and seemingly a whole zoo. But the section holding cats had caught her attention. She let a small exhale of relief—finally a normal pet. Delaney spent a few moments inspecting the multitude of cats available, none she had seen yet caught her eye. From the corner of her eye, she spotted a little black fuzzball that sat in the corner, simply observing the other cats and customers from his isolated spot. The look on the cat's face had Delaney interested, something akin to grumpy and disinterested in its expression.

Delaney's knowledge of witches didn't extend beyond the stereotypical Halloween witches and films with witches in them. From what she could gather, those witches almost always had a black cat. Familiars... that's what they had been called, right? She supposed, as a newly-realized witch, she should try to do it right. Following the stereotype couldn't hurt. Though her Lola would most definitely hate it, the negative superstition around black cats discouraged most superstitious people from having them as pets. The thought was fleeting as she approached the cat.

Her knowledge of cats wasn't as sparse as her knowledge of witches, knowing enough not to pick him up against his will, kneeling and offering an outreached hand to the cat. "Be patient, let it come to you," came from her dad behind her, who was clearly no stranger to Delaney's occasional impatience. It took a bit of waiting for the cat to decide if he wanted to come to her or not, but eventually, he did, polite as he sniffed her offered hand. Though he outwardly acted as though he could care less at first, the cat rubbed his head against her palm, a sign of affection. "Bit grumpy, aren't you? You're like Jiji," Delaney murmured to it, scratching his head, the cat reminding her of the cat from Kiki's Delivery Service. "You don't talk though, do you?" Her question was mostly a joke, but she could never know, everything magic and all.

Calling the friendly-looking shopkeeper over, Delaney smiled politely as the nice older woman approached her. "I'd like this one, please," she tells the older woman, gesturing to the black cat that now rubbed against her legs. "We have friendlier cats, dear. Would you like to take another look?" The woman asks her, glancing at the cat. The black cat tilted his head to the side as if observing Delaney with his pale green-yellow eyes. Delaney mimicked him, a small smile slowly curving her lips as she observed him back, her head tilted. "No, thank you," she tells the woman, facing her once again. "He's perfect."
