─────The shops at Diagon Alley began to wake up and open, but a little girl was already found hopping through the street. Come on, dad, hurry up! Ruby hopped on her feet, eager to get to the Magical Menagerie as soon as she could. Not so fast! They won’t sell out in the next half hour. There is plenty of time. Andrew followed his daughter’s footsteps, and tried to keep up without running. Lights flickered on behind the large windows, and shopkeepers looked at the street at the first customers of the day.

Finally they reached the shop they were looking for. Ruby stood with her nose pressed against the window, looking to see if she could spot them from the outside. Don’t be so curious, we are getting inside. Her father pushed the door open, and Ruby hopped in, a big smile on her face.

Her jaw dropped as she saw all the animals in the store. The small shop stretched out towards the back, and cages were placed everywhere. As quiet as it was on the street, all the more noisy it was in here. They were greeted by a friendly couple, clearly the owners of the shop. The man was standing next to a beautiful brown owl, and was holding out treats. He nodded at them and turned his attention back to the owl.

The lady behind the counter came towards them, and greeted them with a smile. Can I help you find something? Ruby hesitated for a moment. Come on, you can tell her what you want. Her father pushed her forwards a little, and gave her a pinch on the shoulder. I came here to get a pet. Ruby smiled shyly. I would really like a ferret. She looked at her father, and he gave her a small nod. Oh, you want a ferret? Of course, we have some in the back. Come on, I’ll show you.

They followed the lady to the back of the store. There were about a dozen of them, in all sorts of shades and sizes. I’ll leave you to it, so you can choose one you like. But try to choose one of the younger ones, as you are not so old yourself. It will make it easier to bond with them. She turned around and went back to the front.

Andrew took a seat on a small stool in a corner. Ruby slowly walked past the ferrets and looked at them. Some of them came towards her, others were asleep. Her attention was drawn by a little one in the corner. It was mostly white and beige, but had some darker markings around its eyes. As she approached him, he stood up against the cage and tried to get to her. She reached out and took him out. He was still very little, but immediately made himself comfortable in her arms. Ruby couldn’t keep her eyes off him. You two look adorable together. Her father stood up and came towards them. Is this the one? Ruby nodded, as she took the little ferret back to the lady at the counter.

Have you made your choice? The little lady came from behind the counter and smiled at the sight of them. Yes, I see, I think you two are going to be very happy. She showed them some baskets for the little guy to sleep in, and Ruby chose a nice looking wicker basket with a beige cushion. They added some treats to that. Andrew paid the lady, and Ruby thanked her. No need to thank me, just promise me you take good care of him. Ruby nodded and smiled. I will, I promise.I see he is in good hands. Here, this is for you. She offered Ruby a cookie, smiled, and took her place behind the counter once more.

Ruby muttered another thanks, took a bite from the cookie, and followed her dad back to the street. Thank you so much, dad. She smiled at him and looked at the little furry bundle in her arms, already sleeping.
