Behind The Scenes
OOC Notes: Emily was originally going to be named "Emily Shepherd-Hardy," but the name felt too long the longer it stuck with me, so it was ultimately shortened to "Shephard" - a combination of the two words, giving it it's unique spelling and pronounced "Sh-ep-HAR-d."(Always remember the "HA" in "Shephard" when tagging me please!!! Otherwise I won't know I've been pinged!)
The original design was inspired by characters like Matilda from the book of the same name by Roald Dahl, Emily Sasaki from "When Marnie Was There" and Sophie Casterwill from "Huntik: Secrets and Seekers." Personality wise, Emily was influenced by Deet from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (as well as her "canon" voice with an added NI tinge to the accent) and my own ma, who's a big nature loverWhile Emily was always initially going to be a nature lover herself, I'd indefinitely take advantage of those inspirations after Emily was sorted into Hufflepuff - something which I think adds to her character even if only slightly.
Character origins for Emily were conceived long before I joined Hogwarts.io;
She was originally the daughter of a rich neglectful family, exploited for her "pretty figure" and was often isolated in her room like a treasure. A band of pirates would invade the family home and she would stow away with them, eventually being a mediator and moral compass for the group. That story idea never came to fruition unfortunately, so through various tweaks and fixes, Emily was repurposed for Hogwarts.io.
A lot of my own personal influences form Emily's IC preferences and actions; including her use of tarot cards, healing and protection stones, a love for supernatural and fictitious elements, a fascination for themes like "duality of men" and "alter egoism" elements (such as The Wolfman, Werewolf by Night and Jekyll and Hyde) and daydreaming antics.

OOC Notes: After months of patience, Casey finally became an approved iNPC of Ilvermorny. I had managed to miss the deadline when I first joined Hogwarts.io so I was biding my time to bring him to life.
Casey's development had a bit of a heel turn in early planning for the character; until I realised iNPCs couldn't be a special race (prior to the September update 2024) Casey was meant to be a werewolf. This meant having to configure his narrative almost entirely, now instead a wizard-born human student. Rather than simply deactivate and make a new iNPC, I wanted to stick with him (he's my baby damnit!) and I'm actually quite happy with how I plan to write him in the near future as far as his story goes - which will start picking up immensely during next summer ICSo in a way, the limitations from the old iNPC system actually helped me
His name derives from two other characters with the same name; One of the more significant ones being Casey Jones from "TMNT" - they also share a few similarities in personality, including their air of justice and their short fuses. The other influence was Casey Nash from the "Spider-Man: 2099" comics. In fact, his name was very nearly going to be Casey Nash before I realised the character with that exact name already existed (no wonder it sounded familiar in my head). Therefore, as a soft nod to both characters, Casey was ultimately named Casey Stone.
Casey is a different kind of character from what I would normally write or even think up when doing private projects - a bit like Emily, a lot of my protagonists are outgoing, expressive and only laced with a nudge towards insecurities so that my stories aren't overly saccharine or unrealistic. There's hardly any personal influence on my behalf that's been put into Casey - other than the fact that he does street circus. He essentially started off as a testing ground to see if I could write dark, brooding and "edgy" characters; hence his narrative built around a missing family member to keep it somewhat grounded and realistic to allow those kind of themes without it being meaningless. However, Casey has drifted towards a morally ambivalent personality, which I honestly believe suits him better than straightforward teenage angst - something that will become prevalent and I hope shines when his arc picks up speed next year.
