The Badgered Badger
In Lilith’s opinion, the first week of school is drab and uneventful, and if the situation permits it she’d even call it boring.
As horrible as the you-know-who situation was in the nineties, at least there was never a day that went by without something happening. The best part of this week is actually what others would think ‘depressing’, most of the people she’s come across choose to either actively avoid her or at the very least smile at her, only to be disappointed by her not reciprocating. As bare-able as her common room’s welcoming energy is, the only place she feels like she can ever so slightly let down her guard is the school’s Library, its vast collection of books and absence of the more talkative students acts as a sanctuary for her.
After classes she decided that she wasn’t going to go ‘touch grass’ as others put it, she wanted to do her own research in peace, she has a bit of a challenge for herself. Every day she will go to the library and pick a book on one subject, she’ll spend the rest of her time attempting to memorize everything detail in the book down to the font in which everything is written. It just so happens that today’s subject is Potions, which was supposed to be her very first one but Transfiguration proved to be more intriguing.
Unfortunately, a student seems to be occupying the table she usually reads at so she had to pick on closer to the front, she’s never been much of a hopeful person but she truly hopes no one disturbs her. She gets enough of that from her housemates and their constant need for conversation. Schooling her facial expression into her usual unwelcoming glare, she started her reading with one goal in mind; Steer clear of anyone that looks even remotely interested in conversation. The last thing she needs is to get herself into something she isn’t able to talk her way out of. It all went smoothly until a dark haired boy sat in front of her, she didn’t know whether to be annoyed or concerned about the sickly paleness of his skin.
She wondered if he can see the tension weighing on her, the narrowing of her eyes, or the unconscious sneer threatening to appear on her face. Either this boy is pathetically oblivious to her displeasure or he just doesn’t care, for some reason both possibilities get under her skin and cause the sneer to lessen more into a grimace.
She unfortunately finds herself concerned about his skin once more, the poor kid is practically a ghost, the only thing that differentiates him from the ghost is the slight flush of his cheeks caused by possible concentration or some other peculiar emotion. A small bit of pride swells in her stomach, people usually comment on her pale skin but this person looks as if all the Vitamin D has been removed from his body. A bout of laughter attempts to escape her but she succeeds in keeping it at bay. Based on his body language, Lilith can conclude that he definitely has a magical parent or magical parents, students born into a magical lineage no matter how happy, walk with a different kind of weight on their shoulders. She contemplates making him leave but she shots down the idea when she realizes it involves actually communicating with him, even if it’s only with her notepad. Despite her displeasure, she decides to allow him to sit with her, this could be entertaining or at the very least someone to taunt. She needs the amusement after the week she’s had.
