"please, don't ever be afraid to be yourself." - rosie's mother

Loads of thoughts spiraled in Rosie's mind as she made her way down the concrete. Her eyes were having a staring contest with the floor as she fiddled her hands together. Year two had brought a lot of new emotions to the poor young Hufflepuff, some good, some bad. But most of them were very, very confusing. And one in particular was especially puzzling. And she figured the only way to solve this was to go to a professional. Well, not a professional, but an adult. Rosie settled on her Herbology professor, Sorrel Wright.

Why her, out of all the professors? Well, Rosie wasn't very sure. She picked it by "eenie-meenie-minie-mo"ing all of the professors, all the female ones, anyway. Rosie couldn't go to the male teachers for this problem, and there was a big reason for it. A reason she couldn't even think about without getting nervous and scared about herself. A reason that had been stuck in her mind all summer without mercy. What was that reason, you may ask?

Rosie liked girls.

It was something she had discovered after watching Serena leave after their train ride home. How her heart sank. Rosie wouldn't be able to see her all summer, especially since her family probably didn't wanna a muggle like her anywhere near Serena. Rosie had arrived home, and collapsed onto her bed, and started thinking. And after piecing things together... Well, to put it in Rosie language. Her heart fluttered for princesses just like they did for princes.

It freaked Rosie out. Sure, the topic of liking girls wouldn't be rejected by her family. She had dads. Why would they push Rosie out of their life for something they could relate to? But Rosie saw the looks some people gave her dads when they walked in public. Harsh glares, like they didn't deserve to love. It always made Rosie upset. She always thought it was because it was her dads, but she had no idea it was because she could relate to it in the future. What if Rosie got a girlfriend in the future, and everyone stared at her the same way they did to her dads? Honestly, Rosie wasn't worrying about it that much, she was 12 after all. She didn't need to worry about stuff like that at her age. But for some reason, it still worried her.

Rosie approached the Herbology class door, and poked the door open slightly after knocking, poking her head inside. "Excuse me? Is now a good time?" She asked softly, her hands already starting to shake out of fear that Ms. Wright would hate her because of her opening up.

She would just have to find out.

It was the start of the new term, and Sorrel felt just as strange and lost in the Castle as she had last year. The woman currently sat in greenhouse one, relishing the most put together of her seven green houses. The plants in greenhouse one were tame, by Sorrel's standards, but her eyes went straight to the potted plant on her desk. It had been a gift from her mother, and it was one of the only plants in the room that wasn't magical, in the slightest. It was, by far, Sorrel's favorite plant in the whole castle. She hadn't been close to her mother before going off to school, but as an adult, Sorrel realized just how grateful she was for her mother's love and care, and missed her dearly.

Visible traces of Sorrel's history and personality could now be found in the room, unlike last year, when it had been scarcely decorated, for Sorrel's standards. A large Castelobruxo flag sat behind the desk, and the sagging desk was covered in photos of a younger Sorrel, beaming with a group of children in the Brazilian rain forest, faces all dirty and covered in mud, but all looking content.

Those had been better days, before teaching, adventures, and betrayal. Huffing, the Professor pushed the photo away, so it was facing away from her, and now looking out at the empty greenhouse, Sorrel attempted to focus on finishing the homework she had written for the year, already. Classes for herbology had started already, but Sorrel was in no mood to grade the pathetic attempts at identifying plants. It was mildly vexing, considering that the answers were in the assigned reading, but apparently the children of Hogwarts were too cool to put any effort into their homework. Or maybe they detested herbology, which was also horrible, and very stupid of the children.

Still, Sorrel sighed, swirling the remains of her coffee- not tea, she hated tea- in the cup, before draining it in a swift motion, lips puckering at the bitter taste. Sorrel set the cup back down on the desk, ignoring the stickiness clinging to her fingers from the spilled coffee, slopping over the side of the cup earlier.

Before Sorrel could get up to grab another cup of coffee from the adjoining bedroom at the side of the greenhouse, a bushy haired girl peeked her head into the greenhouse, looking alarmed and panicked. It was a good time, Sorrel supposed. She had nothing to do anyways, and the child looked distressed.

Trying to smile kindly, Sorrel guested towards the seat lying on the other side of the desk. "Of course, come sit down. What's wrong?"

"please, don't ever be afraid to be yourself." - rosie's mother

to which i replied four years later, "you're the one who made me afraid, mom."

Rosie followed Sorrel's gesture to the seat besides her, and gulped lightly. She nodded, whispering a silent 'thank you', before going to the chair and sitting down. Almost immediately, her knees touched and she clenched her shaking fists on top of them. Now you were scared, Rosie? You had made it this far, you can do it. She let out a sigh, finally rising her head to meet her eyes with her Herbology professor. "I-I know we didn't talk much last year, but I always found you to be the professor I felt like I could put trust in.." She explained, fiddling with her hands. "I have a problem."

Rosie took another deep breath, before starting to babble, and speaking quicker than usual. "Ever since first year I've been feeling super weird and I don't know how to handle it because if I talk about it someone might see me as weird and-" She took a deep breath since she wasn't pausing. "I-I don't know what to do about the fact I like girls too." She finally said, and her eyes widened. Rosie had never said that out loud in her life. Her eyes welled up with tears and she covered her face, shaking. She didn't know what to do.

The summer wasn't as fun for Rosie as she thought it would be. Her and her fathers were going on a market trip. Rosie's biological father, Eren, held one hand. Her stepfather, Max, held the other hand. Unfortunately, the happy family was getting stared at.

"I can't believe those two men would just... Walk into the open like that." A whisper Rosie heard hissed out.

"Disgusting." He spat, averting his and his wife's eyes.

Rosie knew her fathers were listening, but they were happy. They didn't care what the world thought. So why should Rosie? She knew that, she knew she'd be accepted eventually, but the thoughts, these thoughts on a 12 year old girl. It was too much. Maybe Rosie was rushing into it too soon, but whatever it was, Rosie needed to talk about it, with someone. And that someone was Sorrel. Maybe she could tell her friends, but what if they back stabbed her? Told the whole school? Made it seem like some kind of sin?

What could Rosie do then?

If Sorrel had been expected a conversation about herbology, or worry for failing grades, this was not it. Her tanned face turned a fraction paler, as Sorrel's hands, poised together on the desk, shrank back and she let out a small gasp. It wasn't something that Sorrel liked to publicize, the fact that she was utterly and incomprehensibly gay. There had never been a crush in elementary school for Sorrel, a wet kiss between a boy and a girl when they were young, and didn't know any better. There had never been anything like that, because from the moment Sorrel had entered elementary school, before she even knew what the word gay was, she had thought girls were more attractive than boys.

At Hogwarts, that had become a shameful secret, because of the nature of the pure blood society that dominated the school's numbers, and was focused on growing up and producing heirs. As the daughter of a pure blood and a strange foreign witch with an unknown heritage, the same policies fell onto Sorrel's shoulders. It made her even more shy, and was one of the final straws, when moving to Castelobruxo in her third year, which had lead to the first ever girlfriend Sorrel had ever had.

Estela.

Shoving back the thought of her first girlfriend and first heartbreak, Sorrel smiled soundly at the child in front of her, feeling a pang of sadness for the child. How horrible that one so young was so worried about who she was. Watching the child, a girl named Rosie Parker who had done well in herbology, Sorrel realized, at that moment, just how wrong the society of Hogwarts and the English world was, if this girl couldn't feel safe about something she couldn't control.

With a sigh, Sorrel put aside her hatred of children, and got up from the desk, wrapping the child in a hug that smelled of perfume and an undertone of chocolate. Releasing the girl after a moment, Sorrel bent down to her knees, so she could face the girl in the eyes.

"Oh sweetheart, that's not something you should feel weird about! That shouldn't be a problem at all, but I understand why you might be scared. Rosie, right? Who you care about isn't something you can control, or be scared about. I'm sure your friends will still love and want to be your friend, even if you like girls, or boys, and if they don't, they aren't worth your time."

In all honestly, Rosie was expecting backlash. A lecture, an insult, even. She wasn't supposed to go to professors about this. She should've went to them about homework help, or literally anything else. When Sorrel gasped, she had known she messed up in some sort of way. Rosie lowered her hands, letting her tears roll down her face and onto her hands. Why was she so scared to be herself? Why did she deserve to feel this way?

But then, Sorrel started talking, and her eyes widened. Rosie looked up to her professor with a weird mix of scared and relief on her face. Every word sounded off in Rosie's head like an echo, as she took the entire speech into her mind. Rosie didn't even notice she was hugging her until a moment later, and she slowly wrapped her tiny arms around the professor in return, letting her speak softly to the crying mess she was. She cried a lot, way too much. Rosie didn't know how to express her emotions any other way. It was just the way she worked. But she never let the people she disliked watch her cry. They would never get the satisfaction.

Rosie made teary eye contact with Sorrel, listening to her words and closing her eyes. She took a deep breath and nodded, pursing her lips. "Y-You're right, that's right." She said, nodding a bit frantically. "It's just, my dads.. They always get these ugly looks. Everyone looks at them like they're bloody mad!" She wiped her eyes, gritting her teeth. "I'm scared they'll treat me like that here, if the kids find out. And I wanna help my dads, but they give me ugly looks too!" Rosie clenched her fists, frustrated.

Rosie was not adopted. But everyone seemed to think she was. Oh, I've never seen her in any orphanage. When did you adopt her? How old was she? It made Rosie so angry. She was their kid, it didn't matter how she was theirs. They all looked at her with some sort of pity that her fathers were different than everyone else, they all thought she was adopted. It wasn't a bad thing! To be adopted. It was a wonderful thing. But Rosie didn't find it fun that people automatically assumed it, and judged her based on the fact they previously thought she was an orphan. It just wasn't fun.

"I just don't know what to do, professor. The girl I like could never know. I dunno why I'm even having crushes, I'm too young. The feelings are ugly, I want them to go away." Rosie ran her hands through her brown curly hair, letting out a frustrated huff.

Rosie's tears hit Sorrel hard, like a bullet to her insides. It was enough to make the woman's own eyes fill with tears, and bitterness to resurface in Sorrel, hitting her like another bullet, swiftly to the heart. No child, regardless of their mannerisms or upbringing, should be crying in the arms of someone they hardly knew, about something that mattered little. Who you loved was not controllable, it was not something that one could predetermine, or even influence. Sorrel had learned that the hard way, and the sight of a child who had learned about herself so early on was a touching subject. Rosie should not have felt horrible, she should have felt proud of realizing something so fundamental about herself.

But, the society of wizards in the UK were not supportive, and nor were the muggles. It wasn't fair, but life was not fair. That was one of the first lessons all young people learned, and Sorrel hated it. The warm form of the small sobbing child in her arms proved just how unfair life was. The bitter taste in Sorrel's mouth only grew, as she gently disentangled herself from Rosie.

Wrinkling her nose at the comment about her dads getting foul looks, Sorrel felt the familiar sense of hopelessness regarding the human race. Hopeless, for all the advancements in technology and life, they still couldn't accept one each other. That was why Sorrel preferred her plants to the vast majority of people. Plants would not let her down, and would not laugh at Sorrel's clothing.

It bothered Sorrel to no avail, the fact a child was suffering with criticism and hate. It also hurt her that Rosie's fathers had to deal with hatred. Nobody should ever be afraid of being themselves, and they shouldn't have to feel afraid. Not in an idle world, or a world worth living in. Someday, the world would be less judgmental, and all Sorrel could do was support the children & adults struggling to feel supported. Maybe she should make a club about supporting lgbtq+ rights in Hogwarts. That might be worth looking into.

"The next time anyone gives you, or your dads an evil stare, you stare right back at them and smile. Don't let them know that they've hurt you, and show them that you are nicer than them and better."

Sorrel snorted out a laugh when Rosie mentioned how gross crushes were, and nodded her head to the side, curls spilling over the side of her face. "Crushes are icky, but you never know how someone thinks until you ask them. I thought my first girlfriend was straight, but obviously, she wasn't because well, we kissed and stuff..yeah, fun times."

The reassurance and comfort that she had been receiving from Sorrel was almost overwhelming. She wiped her tears but they seemed to keep coming. She hadn't cried over this in so long. Pretending to be okay with the harassment for the sake of her happy dads was almost a chore. Rosie giggled, watching the tears fall onto her hands. "You really are so kind, Ms. Wright... To someone who constantly talked during lessons," she whispered.

She took a deep breath. Rosie thought she could trust Sorrel at this point, she wouldn't tell anyone about her crush on the Head Girl, right? Professors couldn't do that. She wiped her eyes and looked at her professor with watery eyes. "My crush is uh... Serena, the Head Girl. I don't have a chance with her. I don't wanna like anyone, love is gross! I'm a kid, you know? But the feelings won't go away." She rubbed her arms, sighing. "I just don't know what to do."

Crushes were weird. But whenever she saw a couple in love on TV, she couldn't help but jealous. When she was older, she wanted to be married to someone who would treat her like a princess. But would there ever be someone in Rosie's life who could do that for her? Did she even deserve that? The closest thing she had to any sort of royalty was Anatole, and he would never like a girl like her. Ever.

"But, uh... If it's alright, Ms. Wright, you'll keep this conversation between us, right? Like you won't tell the professors like I'm sick or something. Not that I think you would! I just... I dunno." Rosie groaned, rubbing her face. "I dunno. My brain feels like it's spinning and spinning." She twirled her fingers around aimlessly, her eyes falling closed. Rosie's face was now bright red from the overwhelming emotional, and her eyes were tinted pink, and puffed out. Her cheeks and shirt were tear stained, and Rosie seemed very keen on keeping eye contact with the floor.

The woman choked back a laugh as the small hufflepuff explained that she had been talking during Sorrel's lessons. For some reason, Sorrel was not bothered by this. Most likely because most students talked in her class, simply because Herbology was not a subject that most children enjoyed to listen and pay attention to. Sure, children enjoyed flowers, but the science of learning about flowers and magical plants was dull and tedious to those who did not harbor interest for the subject.

Tucking one of the child's curls behind her ears and offering a small smile, she sighed at the mention of loving the head prefect. Truthfully, Sorrel hardly knew the little Towers child. She had heard that Serena Towers was a scared girl, but was sweet-tempered and kindly, just like the rest of the hufflepuff house. Sometimes Sorrel liked to imagine that she would have been a hufflepuff and enjoyed her years at Hogwarts, in a different reality.

"When I was very young, which obviously, was a long time ago," Sorrel laughed timidly, "I was in love with a girl named Estella. We did not have head girls at my school, but she was one of the smartest and wisest girls in the whole world. I thought she would judge me for having a crush on her, and that she would laugh at me or worse, chase me away."

Hearing Estella's name out loud was enough to make Sorrel silently move away from Rosie and clasp her own arms around herself, face drawn into a pained attempt at a smile. Still, she kept plowing forward, desperate to show the small hufflepuff that she wasn't alone in her feelings.

"I told her I had a crush on her one day, and you know what happened?" Sorrel leaned forward, face far and distant as she remarked on the past. "She kissed me. We dated for a long time after that, Rosie. I always thought she was out of my league too, so don't worry. Love may be gross and disgusting, but it's also beautiful and rare enough that you should treasure what you feel for Serena. You may be a kid, but you're acting a lot like an adult right now, being able to come talk to me and share how you're feeling."

The Professor smiled again and stood up, offering a hand out to Rosie, squeezing slightly if Rosie chose to take her hand. "Of course, everything here stays between us."

Still smiling Sorrel waited for Rosie to get up, a faint blush coming to her cheeks,"Now, hot chocolate always seems to help when one is sad. Would you like to come get some with me?"

"Please, don't ever be afraid to love. Please."

On one summer night before her second year began, Eren whispered the beg out, tears falling down his cheeks. They were both on the porch, and they had just gotten back with a meeting with their family. The news of her father being with a man hadn't come across as good news to her relatives. They left the house an hour earlier then they were supposed to. That night, Eren went home and cried with Rosie hugging him. It had been a hard week for both of them. For her family as a whole. Rosie had never seen her father cry until that night.

So when Rosie found out about her own attraction to girls, she felt something different. Not excited that she had figured herself out, but dread. If people found out that she liked boys AND girls, how would they react? Would they make her cry like how her relatives made her father cry? It was easier to hide it, thankfully, Rosie loved boys just as much as girls. But one day, she'd have to tell someone. It was a big secret for her to hide. She didn't normally keep secrets. She was an open book.

But she was already bullied for being born from muggles. What would happen if people found out she was bi?

She was snapped out of her flashback when she felt her Herbology professor gently push one of her curly strands of hair behind her ears. She sniffled and looked up at her, finally listening to her with her full attention. She adjusted herself in her chair a bit as Sorrel began to tell her story.

It sounded like a fairy tale, really. What seemed to be unrequited love blossoms into a magical romance. It even connected to Rosie's own personal experiences. Except Rosie wasn't in love with Serena. She just had a huge crush on her. But Serena was one of the smartest girls in the school. Her, and probably her mutual Phaedra. She used mutual because they weren't necessarily friends, not yet anyway. She had heard that the former Ravenclaw prefect was smart.

Rosie let out a big sigh of relief when Sorrel said she wouldn't tell anyone. That, in itself, was very sad, that she couldn't handle the secret getting out. But Rosie had no way of knowing how anyone would react to the news about her. She didn't really wanna know, either. Besides, she didn't want her friends finding out from anyone but her. It wouldn't be genuine, that way. It was something about her, why would anyone but her be the one, to tell the truth? Rosie was never a big liar.

At the mention of hot chocolate, Rosie's face lit up, while she took Sorrel's hand. She wiped her remaining tears and nodded quickly. She adored hot chocolate. Especially with whip cream. It was always a go-to comfort drink. She held Sorrel's hand as she stood up, grinning up at her professor. "That sounds really nice. Is there a place to make it here? I hope it's near the common room." She said, thinking about the possibilities of sneaking in late night hot chocolate.

Everything looked so bright at the moment. Nothing else mattered to her right now besides hanging out with her open-minded professor. Rosie admired her more now, and that was a shock because she already admired Sorrel a lot.
