COSY CABIN
Image
Those who have attended a previous summer camp at the Hogwarts Campgrounds may find this "tent" to be particularly welcoming, as the Cosy Cabin tent is less of a tent and more of a log cabin in the shape of one, with its outer walls composed of fragrant pine logs stacked atop each other. Firewood is stacked up neatly next to the entrance, near a dark, wooden sign indicating that this is "Cosy Cabin Tent #1". Rather than a standard tent flap entrance, the Cosy Cabin tents have simple wooden doors, with various pots of paint stacked up next to them. Your first test as tentmates will be to select a color and paint your door.

Inside the tent, a stone fireplace stands large and prominent against the back wall, its fire filling the space with cosy light and warmth. Above the roaring fire on the mantel sits a stack of parchment and quills, with a note in elegant, loopy cursive left next to it: "Let go of what no longer serves you." If you're carrying burdens and grievances from the previous year (or years), consider this your opportunity to release yourself of them through cleansing flame. In the center of the tent is a gathering space with a variety of comfy places to sit, and art supplies like easels, paints, sketchpads, and charcoals are readily available. Mugs and supplies for hot cocoa, as well as a little fondue kit, are set alluringly on the center table.

Lining the walls are eight wooden bunk beds, four on each side, decorated in the same white, tan, and brown colour scheme as the rest of the tent. Each of them have their own little nooks for storage, and are far comfier than any bunk bed has the right to be. They're the perfect distance from each other for staying up late whispering to your bunk neighbor, and have a peculiar magical quirk of occasionally swapping bed occupants without warning during the night. Don't worry, this likely won't affect your beauty sleep! It'll just give you a fun little surprise in the morning.

Bella wished badly that she wasn’t at summer camp. If it was her choice, she would be be back at home and away from the prying eyes of her school mates. None of them had really caused a problem for her during the school year, but it was impossible to not feel othered when you looked more like a fifth year who was held back to first year. She begged her parents to stay home but the Barrets were happy to send her off again, seemingly enjoying her lack of presence in the house. At least, that was how Bella saw it.

She carried her trunk with ease, not wanting to roll it across the pristine stadium pitch. She didn’t know if she was more protective of its clean wheels or not wanting to mess up the site of Quidditch legends. So far, she was impressed with all the differing tent designs and hopes hers was just as cool and offered her enough privacy. She had no friends to stay with, so she was randomly assigned to a tent. Coming across it finally, she didn’t know how to feel about the log cabin in the shape of a tent, but decided that it could always be worse.

Pushing the flap open, Bella was greeted with the scent of fire and hot cocoa. Not bad. She looked around, realizing that she was the first person to arrive. Perfect. She’d have first pick of the beds. Her walk was more like a beeline as she sped towards one of the bunks in the back left corner. Thankfully, all the mattresses looked like they could accommodate her height so she picked the bottom bunk and stuffed her trunk under it. Sinking into the warm sheets, she wondered if any of her tentmates would be up for interacting with her. She hoped not.

Izzi trudged across the Arctic landscape that had descended upon the London Quidditch Stadium. English people were the worst when it came to logic! Their entire country was cold and wet. Clouds. Rain. Fog. Chilly winds. Extra heapings of clouds. And more rain. Izzi checked her tent assignment and glared at the assortment of flimsy looking tents that were spread out on the historic quidditch pitch.

She rolled her eyes.

SNOW!!??

One would think that English people, and in particular magical folk, would try to offer visitors a more hospitable place for summer camp. But no! They had to actually make the environment worse than ever it could normally be! She looked down at her assignment. Cosy Cabin Tent No. 1. This was confusing. Was she to look for a tent? Or was she to look for a cabin? She let out a foggy breath.

Her frozen feet trudged onwards. The British kids and the American kids seemed to be having fun in the snow. They were throwing it at each other and rolling around in it like farm animals in mud. Especially the boys. As she headed into the scattered tent village, she could hear the voices of the European and Asian kids. Her mind flitted back to the last time she attended summer camp. The face of an American boy passed before her vision.

Followed by that of a girl.

The girl that had tried to be friendly to her after her quidditch team lost their match to the Americans. Izzi never did find out the girl's name. She should have appreciated the girl's compassion at the time, but she had felt too conflicted to even think straight!

Izzi turned a corner, instinctually dodging several balls made from snow thrown by the British kids. She found her tent at last. Cosy Cabin Tent No. 1. She was pleasantly surprised to discover that her place was, in fact, not a tent at all. It was in fact a rather stoutly built house of wooden logs. As she pushed the door open, she discovered that the interior was, in fact, quite cosy! The warmth of a wood fire in the hearth was welcoming and warmed the entire space nicely! There were plenty of comfortable looking sofas and chairs, many smelling faintly of sheepskin. Izzi nodded slightly, something akin to a smile playing about her lips. This would do rather nicely!

She peeled off the heavy cloaks that had kept her marginally warm, hanging them on the pegs by the doorway. Then she headed towards the right side, choosing a lower berth that was close to the fire. It was only then that she noticed one other girl had taken a bunk, over in the left corner. Slipping off her boots, she traded them for comfy slippers. The other girl, maybe an American by the look of her, didn't seem like she wished for company. This suited Izzi. Right now, she felt the need for a bit of rest before the other girls started showing up.

Le Flashback

Casey was face down on the bed with his bags mostly packed and ready to go. He didn't want to go. He doesn't remember saying "yes" to the idea during the so-called "discussion" at the dinner table the other week. Go figure that his folks would cart him off to London for this dig anyway.

His mother walked in to pack some last minute essentials, taking small amusement in his face-down stature. She threw in some deodorant and a small rind of orange string in with his shower stuff before walking over to him. Taking him by the shoulders with him still on the bed, she started shaking him like a ragdoll.

"It'll do you the world of good...!"

"Mom~! Get... Off!"

Casey yielded and she let go, a lethargic huff escaping the boy. He appreciated his mother's efforts to light some kind of excitement in him, but very few times were her efforts in vain. This was one of them. She came and sat down with him, playing with a strand of his brown hair.

"You know... You might surprise yourself. Your dad and I have been saying for weeks it'll be good for you. Something good will come out of it. You'll see."

"Hmph... Get Nick back and I might just be convinced."

A familiar sigh escaped his mother's lips. "Cay... I know you and Nick were very close but he's been gone for so long... Who knows if he's even still..." She was fighting the urge to cry. Catching on, Casey sat up and rested against her arm.

"I'm still gonna find him one of these days, even if I have to search the entire forest for him when I get back." His mother smiled weakly. His resolve was strong as ever. The only person left that held any hope that her son was still alive while even she and his father were slowly succumbing to the masses - that Nick Stone was killed during last summer while camping with his friends, all of whom were found dead, injured or missing too. If not for Casey, Nick would've been a distant memory by now.

His mother arose from the bed and swept a hand over her youngest's hair. "Use camp as a reliever of all that. Enjoy the activities, make some friends. Just... I want to see you happy, Casey. Don't just force a smile. Feel it."

The boy sighed. She had a point. "Maybe you could charm your new friends with a little..." She gestured to his street circus gear and Casey let out a half-hearted laugh.

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say, mom."

And Now...

Casey stood in front of the tent with his suitcase in hand and his rope bag carrying his circus equipment on his back. There was no going back now. He was here.

Just go in and get it over with, Cay...

He entered the cabin that dictated his assigned residence and already spotted a few other campers inside. Damn. He thought he'd be the first one here. Though judging by their demeanours they were in no interest at all for socialising. One of them looked like she could hide away in the walls. The other seemed to merely want some time to herself. That all made Casey's job so much easier. Either this cabin was reserved for the antisocial outcasts that wouldn't fit in with other tent groups, or he was lucky to be in a quiet crowd.

He hauled his stuff over to the far corner beside the fireplace where a bunk was hidden quite cosily behind it. Dumping his case against the stone, he tossed his other bag onto the bed. Just as well he didn't bring the unicycle, he'd have no clue where to put it with its 28inch wheel taking up room. Trying to walk past it back home was an obstacle on its own already.

The stark contrast of the cabin's heat and the cold outside was nice if not ironic. He removed all the added layers he had to put on earlier from all the snowy weather outside.

Summer camp? I call false advertising on that one.

He sat on his chosen bunk and quietly observed the rest of the cabin. His hand snuck into his back and was already fidgeting with a juggling ball from the kit he packed.

Same crap, different place.
