On August 15th, when Victor LaChance's business plane touched down at the Tokyo-Haneda airport, EmmaLee and Kiernan, a tall, attractive boy EmmaLee's age with neat, wavy black hair, were bouncing in their seats with excitement. While this was primarily a business trip for Victor to have some meetings and do some market research, he had promised that they would explore the city when he wasn't working. So the children were excited to explore Japan, but really Tokyo.
Victor laughed at the children's excitement as Emilia, their stewardess, opened the plane's exit door and connected a set of rolling steps to the plane, provided by an employee of the airport on the ground. Emilia was a thin, but tall, Native American woman with her long black hair in a bun, wide brown eyes, and a blue uniform. Emilia was a part of three crew members who regularly flew with this plane: Heinlein, the pilot, and Gabriel, the chef, were also aboard and they would all be flying back to the States after a good day's and night's rest until they flew back to collect the group in two weeks. This group who ran the airplane could basically do whatever they wanted to with their time on the ground but were paid to be "on call" if the company needed the plane for business travel. "I hope you all have a great time and I'll see you soon." She said with a bright smile.
EmmaLee beamed at the woman "See you soon, Emilia!" she called as she hopped out of the plane and rushed down the stairs, Kiernan barely a beat behind. Victor continued to chuckle as he left at a much slower pace.
"You'd think she'd never been to Tokyo before." He said as he passed Emilia, highly amused at his daughter. Emilia chuckled.
"She's never been with a friend before," Emilia commented with a smirk.
"Fair. See you, Emilia. Don't have too much fun yourself." Victor tipped an invisible hat to her and stepped down the stairs where the children were already in a little runway car waiting for him. The travelers had left EmmaLee's mother, Celeste, and her sister, Chlo, in San Francisco to fly back to New York, so it was just going to be Victor, EmmaLee, and EmmaLee's childhood friend, Kiernan, here until the children had to return to school, Hogwarts and Ilvermorny respectively, and Victor was done with his business.
Once Victor got into the car himself, it zoomed off, taking them to the main building of the airport to collect their luggage and head on to their hotel.
________________________________________________________________
The next few days were filled with good food, work during the day, and exploring the country during the evening. When Victor had been a younger man, he had spent a year here learning about the language and culture and slowly formulating his plan for expanding his parent's small Lenape Remedies business. He had always wanted to expand into Japan, but the United Kingdom had offered solid opportunities first, so he had established Lenape Pharmaceuticals UK there first. Now he could finally start working on establishing a branch here in Japan, and also teaching EmmaLee the finer parts of running the company, the things you needed to do to make it go anywhere, how to make connections, and how to make plans that provided fruit.
This meant that EmmaLee was also working alongside Victor for most of the time: being taught how to do market research and how to figure out which of their products a particular market would be interested in and attending business meetings with her stepfather and his business partner, Hirato Ichibangase, while Kiernan was left to his own devices at the hotel. Well, mostly his own devices. Admittedly, he had his own heir-to-be homework to be getting on with while EmmaLee and her father were gone so it wasn't like he was bored with nothing to do or simply doing nothing. His father, Aidan Kennedy, worked for the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) and expected his son to follow suit and Kiernan was, generally, happy to oblige.
On the afternoon of August 18th, EmmaLee stood in the lobby with her stepfather and Ichibangase-san, who had connected Victor with a few different herb and ingredient sellers he knew. Hirato Ichibangase was an overall average-looking Japanese man of average height who wore a stylish navy suit. EmmaLee called him Ichichi-chan in private company because she couldn't pronounce any part of his name when she first met him at her parent's wedding. She had hid behind her mother's skirt in embarrassment when he conjured a blue rose for her and happily told her that Ichichi-chan, which had been the closest try, would be fine. Since then, EmmaLee had learned to say his name properly, but the nickname had stuck with most of their family.
The three had spent the morning meeting the non-magic (no-maj, non-magique, mumajin) sellers that Ichichi-chan knew and had been meeting with magical sellers all afternoon. This meeting, with someone named Midorimori-san, was their last meeting on this topic and also for the day.
As Ichichi-chan and Papa Victor discussed their previous meeting, EmmaLee admittedly tuned them out to let her mind wander. It had pretty much been the same after-conversation after every almost identical meeting, with an extended discussion about the exact same points when they had gone to the noodle shop for lunch.
Papa and Ichichi-chan had explained to EmmaLee early this morning that these meetings were more of an introduction than putting anything down in stone. The parties would introduce themselves, discuss the high points of what Papa and Ichichi-chan were wanting to do with expanding Lenape Remedies into Japan and why, and see if the people they were meeting with were interested in helping them out with supplies. Then they would have more meetings later with those who were interested in forming a business friendship.
As EmmaLee gazed around the lobby, she smoothed her dress down, a simple darker blue one that Ichichi-chan had bought her and told her to wear for these meetings, and then watched for a moment as the men talked. Ichichi-chan was about her stepfather's age and he had a wife long enough for them to have a child before she had died of illness. EmmaLee had only met his son, Hiro, once or twice as he was six years older than her. He had been on the way out of Mahoutokoro as she was going in to Hogwarts. EmmaLee wondered for a moment why her father's friend had never remarried. He was just as able to still have children as her Papa Victor.
Before EmmaLee could think a lot more, the door to the building opened and both Victor and Ichichi-chan looked over to see who had entered. The men turned and bowed slightly in greeting to newcomers and Victor placed a gentle hand on EmmaLee's shoulder blade as he turned, quietly signaling these were the people they were meeting with and she should greet them. EmmaLee folded her hands and bowed slightly with her father and his business partner and Ichichi-chan greeted them.

Heirs To The Throne
If it had been solely up to Ginyami's parents, the meeting with Victor LaChance, EmmaLee LeDames, and Hirato Ichibangase would have never occurred. They were purist and racist enough to have refused to do business with anyone who did not share the same ideals they did. However, since Ginyami had started introducing new ideas they had reluctantly been testing out in order to try to prove him wrong, things had changed. Because, as it turned out, they weren't able to prove him wrong.
Ginyami's ideas of reaching out to appeal to and do business with wizardborn, half-blood, and even muggle-born magical folk turned out to be a great success for the chain of shops that was the Midorimori family business: Mahou no Midorimori - also known in English as 'Magic of the Green Forest.' More business associates meant more clients and more clients meant more customers. From there, it was simply a matter of Ginyami proving his point through statistics of supply, demand, and overall profits that he had a better business sense than his parents even at age 12.
This, of course, had to do with the unwitting influence of Sara Kohana on Ginyami. Since they had essentially grown up together from around age 10, Ginyami had learned a lot from Sara and it seemed the reverse had been true as well. The pureblood had noticed early on that the muggle-born he had later come to think of as his friend was very sensitive to the feelings of those around him. As Sara already had enough things to feel anxious about in his daily life, Ginyami had taken to being friendly to those who Sara seemed to unnerve just by being around him. Since Ginyami was often with Sara, Ginyami's social awareness, amicable nature, and considerate attentiveness toward others often balanced out Sara's unfortunately frightening features, disturbing beauty, and quiet disposition, making Sara easier for others to be around without seeming off put by him.
Prior to Sara, Ginyami hadn't bothered pretending to be nice to anyone except other purebloods, which he hated because he knew that they knew as well as he that everyone was faking and their entire interactions were basically for show. Once he had thought to put on that mask for Sara's sake, however...he'd learned that being kind and friendly to non-purebloods was actually quite beneficial to him. It was from there that he realized doing business with other magical folk outside of the purebloods' dying, shrinking, stagnant community would have provided his business and their family with a great advantage over the other, more conservative and traditional pureblood families... And that was how he had come to prove his parents wrong about applying their personal beliefs to their business.
For all of Sara's influence on him, however, and despite his broader mindset compared to his parents', Ginyami was still a purist and a racist. At least...he believed he was, conveniently deceiving himself into forgetting things like the fact that Sara was muggle-born and denying the idea that he considered Sara an equal. Because that was, overall, what Ginyami was best at - deception. He was so good at it, in fact, that he didn't even recognize when he was practicing it on his own thoughts. And there was no one who had been able to point out to him the fallacies in his way of thinking - at least not yet.
Thus, the confident young teenager didn't hesitate to accept the invitation from Lenape Remedies to meet with their representatives in order to discuss potentially doing business together. His parents had warned him that if he, as the heir to the family business, chose to get said business involved with such riffraff as impure foreigners, they would not help him. But that didn't bother the arrogant Ginyami, as he, at age 14 then, felt ready to deal with anyone - even adults twice his age. And he meant to prove it to his parents and the rest of the extended Midorimori family, too.
He first started by doing what he could to research those he was meeting with and to study what he came to learn of them, doing what he could to commit the information to memory before the appointed date of their formal introductions. Victor LaChance, EmmaLee LeDames, and Hirato Ichibangase all seemed like quite intriguing individuals, but it was fascinating to find out that it was the young lady of 12 years, EmmaLee, who would be taking over her stepfather's company once he stepped down.
He was surprised at how young her parents were starting her off learning the family trade, especially as a non-Asian family who didn't seem to bother with the conservative tradition of holding out for a specifically male heir. Still, he supposed, he had just about been her age when his own family trade was entrusted to him, so it shouldn't have been that shocking. The difference here was she seemed to have the support of at least one parent behind her while he did not. Not even a biological parent, either. How curious.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of mumajin technology he had access to as a pureblood, Ginyami had very limited resources from which to draw any information about Emmalee or her stepfather, Victor, other than the fact that Victor, at least, seemed to be Hirato's business partner from America. As for Hirato...well, at least he was already known to the Midorimoris which was how the invitation for the meeting had even managed to reach them in the first place. Hirato was a Japanese pureblood, after all.
Unlike Ginyami, his parents hadn't done much research on the people they did business with before they did business with them so long as they had a good pedigree by their standards. That meant that even though they'd done business with Hirato in the past, the invitation for the meeting with his business partner from America was a complete and utter surprise to them. They had even encouraged Ginyami to network with and befriend his son when they had been attending Mahoutokoro together. As soon as his parents read what had been sent to them, however, they'd wanted to burn the letter along with all their ties to Hirato Ichibangase, calling him a blood traitor along with a slew of other rude terms and cursing his name, but Ginyami had stopped them and taken the invitation for himself to respond to it on his own.
Upon asking around and contacting other purebloods, Ginyami had learned that Hirato not only did business with non-purebloods and foreigners, but he did business with mumajin, too. That didn't sit too well with Ginyami, particularly because, since his family specialized in magical plants, it was just asking for trouble to introduce such things to a mumajin market. Still, he was sure they could discuss that and his concerns if and when the time came for doing business with Hirato and Victor.
Having prepared as best as he'd been able to with the resources available to him, the 5'7" 14-year-old heir arranged the meeting to the best of his abilities. Thus, when the door to the building opened and Ginyami appeared, he was wearing a brilliant, polite smile, a very expensive-looking traditional kimono with a haori coat over it, and a pair of hakama pants. On his feet were tabi socks so he could wear his geta sandals. Upon seeing the trio, he bowed deeply at the waist, mirroring their respectful behavior. He had long since learned to swallow his pride in certain situations such as this one, even if he believed he was better than the people he was interacting with.
"Greetings, LaChance-san, LeDames-san, and Ichibangase-san! It is an honor to be meeting the owners of Lenape Remedies themselves; not to mention the future owner. I am Ginyami Midorimori, the only son and heir of the main Midorimori family. While I am afraid it will not be possible to meet with the current head of my family, for all intents and purpose of this business meeting, I am the acting family head, so please feel free to direct any questions, comments, concerns, complaints, and anything else to me." The fox-eyed individual righted himself, clasping his hand together cheerfully. "Also, I know my name is quite a mouthful and I do endeavor to get to know you all better, so in the spirit of casting aside address-based formalities, at least, please - call me Yami."
Ginyami then raised a hand and snapped his fingers, signaling a trio of people to enter through the door he had, each carrying a bouquet of magical plants. The bouquets were artfully arranged a variety of colorful, fresh flora that ranged in rarity, magical potency, and value. From Niffler's Fancy to Flitterblooms, all the plants had been collected directly from the greenhouses that supplied the Midorimori's business chain. He had speculated as to whether or not the people he would be meeting might have had plant allergies, but decided, eventually to deal with that if the issue cropped up. Anyway, it would have been terribly ironic if the owners of Lenape Remedies were unable to remedy their own ailments; especially something as simple as allergies.
"These are samples of the quality of the magical plants, herbs, and ingredients we sell at Magic of the Green Forest - which I will call 'MGF' for short. I thought they would make good welcoming bouquets," he explained as his employees offered the plants for the owners to examine. "I will have them set aside and bagged to take with you before we part ways today. That said...is anyone hungry?" He tilted his head with a cheerful grin. "I thought it might be easier to talk business over a meal - particularly after all the previous meetings you've had prior to this one. You must all be exhausted. Why not change things up a bit? My treat, of course."

EmmaLee speaks with a light French accent.
Calming Presence is in effect.
EmmaLee raised a pale, curious eyebrow as the older boy walked in alone. She took in his confident air and his traditional Japanese clothes and before she could rein in her thoughts, her first impression of him was that his face looked very much like a weasel's, with slanted eyes, a very pointed chin, and a smile that didn't seem to fit his face correctly. It seemed far wider than his natural smile might be, almost like a Greek comedy mask. The effect was..... unsettling. As her manners caught up with her first impression, EmmaLee was horrified with herself for thinking something so rude about someone she hadn't even properly met yet.
As he came closer, he was almost a foot taller than her and a good deal older, which enhanced the unsettling feeling about him and caused the hair on the back of her neck to prickle a little. EmmaLee found older boys intimidating because they only ever seemed to interact with her in order to make a fool out of her or otherwise embarrass her. This was an entirely different situation, but the feeling still stood, she would rather be doing this with an heir her age or an adult. Regardless, she smiled politely and dipped her head a bit in acknowledgment of the boy's introduction.
When Ichchi-chan had briefed them over breakfast on each of their meetings today, he had brought up that he had not really expected a positive response from the Midorimori family. Apparently, they were "fiercely pureblood", as he put it, but he had requested a meeting anyway on the off chance that they would be intrigued by the prospect. It seemed their son was taking the company in a more "open-minded" direction as he was getting older and more involved in the company and had been the one to respond. EmmaLee was a little curious that his parents would send him to a meeting like this alone, but after a moment of thought, she figured that maybe she would be sent to do the same as she got older and more used to these kinds of meetings.
Ichibangase smiled as the trio righted themselves and the Midorimori heir introduced himself. "Thank you, Yami. In that case, you may call me Hirato and this is Victor and his daughter, EmmaLee. We are very pleased to be speaking with you and very thankful that Magic of the Green Forest is interested in our little venture." He said, gesturing to each person with a flat hand once more. Victor bowed once again as he was reintroduced, this time producing a black, white, and red business card to Yami with both hands. The business card was written in Japanese and if Yami took it and turned it over, the other side was written in English. It had the Lenape Remedies logo of a turtle, a wolf, and a pair of turkey feet collected around a spiral to represent the three major Lenape tribes. Victor had once explained to EmmaLee that he was a part of the wolf tribe, but he wanted all of the Lenape to benefit from his business.
As the young Midorimori boy continued to speak, Victor righted himself and rubbed his chin in thought. "Ah, well, that is disappointing, but maybe it is a good opportunity to hand things off to the next generation, so to speak." He said, turning to EmmaLee with a wide smile.
"What do you think, EmmaLee?" He asked enthusiastically. "Do you want to take the lead on this meeting with young Yami?" The tone of his voice gave every room for EmmaLee to protest, but also held high expectation. She was welcome to say that she was not ready, but EmmaLee got the impression that Papa Victor would be let down if she said no. It wasn't like her stepfather was ever hard to read or ever asked too much of her. If he was an open book, he was definitely the dictionary, an honest, straightforward man with not a manipulative bone in his body.
The thing was, this is not exactly what EmmaLee wanted to do with her life. As much as she loved her mother's expansive gardens and as much as she appreciated the company that put food on their table and multiple roofs over their heads, she was mostly here because of how excited Papa Victor had been when she had said yes to learning "the family trade". Lenape Remedies had been in his family in some capacity for generations, though much smaller before now, and he liked the idea of passing it on to his children. Before Chlo, EmmaLee's infant sister, it had been assumed that EmmaLee would be his only child, as EmmaLee's mother did not carry children well.
Frankly, EmmaLee was kind of hoping that Chlo would take more interest in the company when she got older and take over, but for now, this is what EmmaLee had agreed to be trained to do, so she would do it to the best of her ability. EmmaLee only considered saying no for a moment before she nodded her head delicately.
"I can do it, Papa." She said, turning from her stepfather's expectant face to Yami's erm generous one. "Do you mind if I take the lead from our side, Yami-san? English is also my second language, but as it is our common one and you speak it rather well, may we continue to discuss in it, or would you like Ichich-" She covered her mouth delicately with her fist and made a small cough to correct herself. If calling Ichichi-chan, Ichibangase-san was weird, calling him Hirato-san was even weirder. "Excuse me, 'Irato-san, to help translate?"
She tried not to dwell on whether she should still call everyone -san or not, considering she was the youngest here. Ichichi-chan had explained that -san was a lot like Mr., so she should call those older than her Mr. still, right? She was also taking a note from how Ichichi-chan had handled their previous meetings. He had offered the same proposition to the others they had met with who had spoken English and only one of the non-magique companies had agreed to converse in English. The others had used Ichichi-chan as a translator. It had been a very interesting dynamic to watch, like verbal ping pong, or that telephone game. Victor would say his bit, and then Ichichi-chan would repeat it to the other people in the meeting, then they would respond, and Ichichi-chan would repeat, and so on. It seemed a tiresome ritual when at least two of the groups spoke English, but apparently, that was business.
When Yami-san's employees brought in the bouquets of plants, the three on the other side of the conversation examined each of them. EmmaLee recognized many of her mother's own plants and quite a few that her mother didn't grow. Her mother and her father's tribe grew the plants for the North American factory in New York state and EmmaLee had learned earlier that there were many plants that didn't grow well in a distinctly northern environment like New York, so her mother obviously didn't grow those. They got many of those plants from growers further south. It had intrigued EmmaLee to learn that so many of the herbs and plants they used could be grown in this island country alone.
"These are beautiful, Yami-san," EmmaLee said with a smile as she looked up from the bouquets to the boy. When he offered dinner, EmmaLee wasn't sure how to respond, so she turned to Ichichi-chan for guidance. Ichichi-chan bowed a little and took over.
"Moving to dinner sounds like a wonderful idea if it pleases you, but we cannot possibly allow you to pay. You are our guest after all. Please, allow us." He said, gesturing to himself and bowing slightly again.
