The Wands, The Wizard and The Goblin
@Renzo Russo
Date: July 5th, 2024
Time: Midafternoon
Although the day spent on Diagon Alley had been long and tiring, little Lemmy found a burst of energy when the next stop on the tour came about. The shops on this famous alley were all splendid and worth a visit, but this time he would be entering Ollivanders to complete a milestone that comes in every witch and wizard’s life. Today he would receive his very first wand! The boy had dreamt of this day for years now. Oh how many days he had spent marveling over his mother and grandmother’s wands and to think he would soon be leaving with his own was overwhelmingly exciting!
The possibilities seemed endless. The different varieties of wood, the magical animal that lent to the core, the craftsmanship of the wand maker themselves! Would his be long and flexible or perhaps short but firm? His mothers was a darker shade of wood and was quite straight and simple, yet his grandmothers was lightly colored and crooked as could be! His parents had explained to him the special relationship between wand and wizard. Even his father, who was barred from carrying a wand due to his half-goblin status was excited for Lemmy as they told him the wand chooses the wizard. That concept alone left the boy amazed at what was to come.
So, without further ado, his little goblin legs moved a mile a minute as he ran through the entry door. However, he would soon be stopped in his tracks as his eyes took in the scene. Stacks and stacks of wand cases were on display as the shelves seemed to reach all the way into the heavens above. Which one would be his? Lemmy paused for a moment, perhaps expecting some divine experience with glowing lights and holy music. Though that was not reality at all his imagination was strong and he was easily excitable. As the moment passed Lemmy knew for sure that he wanted a closer look. With a bit of a dash he would make his way to the nearest display.
Though usually quite coordinated, Lemmy’s rambunctious nature got the best of him as he bumped into another boy standing near the display as well. “Oh goodness. Pardon me.” He would face the other boy as he presented his formal apology. For the most part, Lemmy would look like any other eleven year old, but some of his features were quite striking. Most would notice that he was rather short. Usually a solid foot shorter than his peers. Then his shaggy locks of brown hair were often tucked behind rather pointed ears. “My name is Lemmy LaRue.” The part-goblin extended a hand that carried abnormally long digits as he made his introduction. “Are you buying a wand today too?!” The words were dripping with excitement as he beamed with a smile.

Renzo had been out shopping all day with his mother, Anna and brother, Rocco. His father was home, avoiding joining on this exciting day. It wasn’t due to his ex-wife being there or because of the rusty relationship he had with Rocco, but because of how incomplete it would have been without the final family member being with them, Isabella, who was the middle sibling.
Despite Renzo’s father not being present, he was still enjoying his day. How could he not? He was to be attending Hogwarts! What wasn’t exciting about that!?
The three had been shopping for the past few hours by now and all that was left was for Renzo to get his wand. He had to leave the best till last, Rocco told him that. Anna had told her boys she was going to Flourish and Blotts for a few things and would meet them outside Ollivanders after.
As the two boys entered Ollivanders, Renzo’s eyes lit up and his hands clenched together at the sight of boxed wands stacked higher than his vision could see. "W..Wow- Rocco!" He called out excitedly to his brother, his tone matching his shocked expression. "This is so-" He was cut off by Rocco who placed his hands over his shoulders, both shaking and squeezing them to heighten his younger siblings excitement. "Sorprendente! Lo so. Ricordo di aver preso la mia bacchetta" He released Renzo’s shoulders and stood beside him to get a better look at him. "Avevo lo stesso aspetto." There was a proud look in Rocco’s face as took in this moment with him, but he knew he had to leave him alone whilst he searched for his wand. He didn’t want any distractions. "Aspetto fuori, va bene?" Renzo nodded slowly to his brothers words, watching him leave the shop before they returned back to the shelves of unlimited wands. If it wasn’t for the sudden bump and unfamiliar voice from a smaller boy, Renzo could have been staring for hours.
"Oh.. it’s okay!" He replied almost straight after, not wanting the other to feel bad for walking into him. His dark hues had to shift down to have a proper look at the goblin that stood before him. Not a full head tilt, since Renzo wasn’t all so tall himself yet, but.. this boy was… short to say the least. Most kids their age would likely blurt out asking something like ‘why are you so small’ or ‘why are your ears pointy? What are you?’ But not Renzo. He was too polite, manners his mother taught him from the moment he could speak. That, and he was quite shy so asking so personal wasn’t something he felt comfortable asking a strangers.
The gaze that lingered on the smaller boy flickered away and back to the shelves quickly when he introduced himself. He prodded at one of the boxes for a few second, taking in his upbeat approach to Renzo. It helped calm him a little. "I’m Renzo Russo." He responded and returned the eye contact once more, a smile now appearing on his own lips, almost as wide as the other boys. "It’s nice to meet you, Lemmy!" He hoped he could understand his thick Italian accent. His English was good, but the accent sometimes made it a bit harder to catch onto.
"I am! I’m guessing you are too?" His tone matched Lemmys excited energy, but he quickly withdrew and his once bright smile was replaced with a timid, shy one. He let out a low nervous chuckle before exhaling deeply, then glancing over his shoulder to see his brother was outside waiting, but his back was turned to the window. He hoped his shyness hadn’t made the boy feel weird or anything. He just didn’t have many friends here in the UK, so struggled knowing how to interact so casually with them.

Lemmy shot the other boy a sheepish grin as he truly did feel bad for bumping into him. He could hear his Grandmother’s voice now as she was a stickler for manners and etiquette. Though she probably would have let him off easy considering how important of a purchase was soon at hand. However, all seemed well as the other boy quickly forgave him and matched his own enthusiasm. Perhaps bumping into him was turning out to be a happy accident!
The dark hued gaze of the other would fall to Lemmy and he simply smiled as the other boy looked him over. It surely would not be the first time that someone had looked upon his unique physical features with either curiosity or disdain. Though the LaRues had done all they could to protect Lemmy from any kind of prejudice they had also taught him well how to stand up for himself in the face of adversity. However, yet again this other boy proved to be a decent fellow as none of the usual questions about Lemmy’s nature followed behind his gaze. Only a warm greeting would come his way.
“Renzo Russo.” Lemmy repeated the name back with genuine affection in his tone. “What a marvelous name! Double initials just like me. Grandpa Larluff always said it’s good luck to have matching initials. You see, he’s a double L just like me and you’re a double R which is fantastic. Imagine the monogram embroidery!” He finished with a quick double clap of his hands as his excitement continued to get the best of him and what sparked his interest even more was the lush accent that slipped off of Renzo’s tongue. “You have a lovely accent by the way. Italian perhaps?” The LaRue family business had taken them far and wide, so he was a decent guess when it came to some of the more well known accents. Lemmy himself had a bit of that sing song tone to his own voice for the LaRues had been in Wales for generations now. “If so, what brings you to England?”
The pairs attention would be drawn back to the wands as Renzo’s gaze moved to the shelves. “Yes indeed. My very first wand!” Lemmy answered again with a clap of his hands. Renzo let out what seemed like a nervous laugh after he too shared in the part-Goblins excitement. Lemmy would do his very best to keep encouraging it. His long fingers would rise up to Renzo’s elbow and if the other allowed it he would guide him closer to the shelves. If not he would continue anyways. “Just imagine the possibilities! I’ve no idea what I’ll receive. I can’t believe that it’s the wand that chooses the wizard. Mother tells me it’s a very special bond. I just hope not to break mine before I get home. Wouldn’t that be a disaster! Tell me Renzo, any ideas of what type of wand you’ll get?” Lemmy’s thoughts and questions came quick and fast. Hopefully it wasn’t too much for his newfound friend.

Wide smiles and small bursts of laughter would come from him as his brown hues focused intently on the other who spoke of his own family. He was quite fond of Lemmy from the get-go. Anyone who valued family, he took a liking to instantly. The only thing that baffled him however was the mentioning of monogram embroidery, which he had absolutely no idea meant. Either way, he nodded and didn’t want to interrupt the little goblins enthusiastic speech. His English lessons could wait for another time.
The double clap made Renzo jolt and brought him back down from the waves of excitement that were heightening. His brow raised when he caught on to his accent. Not that an Italian accent was hard to pick out, but most people their age didn’t have a range of knowledge on counties and accents. “Yeah!” He replied with a heightened pitch. “I’m Italian but I’ve lived here for a few years now.” Renzo’s could sense an accent on Lemmy too but he didn’t now england well enough to pin point where it was from exactly. “Your accent is uhh..” He raised his hand, using it expressively as his face furrowed slightly in thought.
He tutted to himself for not finding the right words, but brushed it aside if Lemmy wasn’t to answer. If he did, he would smile and nod, as if he knew exactly where Wales was.
“Hmm..” Renzo’s brows furrowed once more as he thought how to word his next answer. There were a few reasons for why he had moved out here to the UK, but the main was due to the divorce between his parents. He wasn’t too comfortable sharing such a sensitive topic with a stranger— as nice as he was, there was just a time and place for that and it wasn’t now. “I moved here with my father. It’s uhh.. complicated. But I visit my mother sometimes in Italy. My brother too. And their work often brings them here so I get to see them a lot.”
Renzo kept his smile, though it had shifted to an almost effortless one. He was grateful for Lemmy being able to keep the conversation flowing. He nodded along with him. “My papa said the same! It’s a special moment for us both then!” He grinned and finally let his eyes shift off to the shelves of boxed wands. “So.. the wand picks us.. right? I have no idea what I’ll get.. hopefully something powerful.. and cool looking!” He let out an excited laugh as he extending a finger to prod at one of the boxes. His eyes flicker down briefly to the part-goblin. “What about you Lemmy? Are you hoping something specific?”
It was probably for the best that Lemmy was the more bubbly and energetic of the two right now. It helped ease the waves of nerves and shyness that Renzo kept experiencing, but the more Lemmy spoke, the more comfortable he got.

The Wands, The Wizard and The Goblin
@Renzo Russo
Lemmy's wide smile and enthusiasm had no threat of ending as he and Renzo continued to get to know each other. The thought that he hadn't even started school yet and already had a potential friend left him buzzing with excitement. The young lad pump his fist in victory as Renzo confirmed his suspicions. "Ho, ho. I thought I had you pegged. Your English is quite good, so makes sense that you've been here for some time. I've been lucky enough to travel to Italy a couple of times with my parents while they were there on business. Beautiful country!" Lemmy loved nothing more than when his family allowed him to accompany them on business trips. He was a little world traveler in the making. Only seven years of schooling stood in the way! "Welsh!" He blurted out as Renzo searched for the word. "We must host your family there one day. What do you think of that?"
Lemmy could be quite oblivious from time to time, especially when he was excited, but he at least picked up on the fact that Renzo's family makeup might be uncomfortable to speak about. He himself was lucky enough to come from a family that had not experienced divorce, yet he knew that it must be tough. "That's wonderful that you have family both in Italy and here in the U.K. as well. What line of work is your mother and brother in? I simply love the idea of traveling for work one day." Again he admired anyone who had that kind of opportunity in life and he'd happily lap up any inspiration.
Lemmy would again clap in excitement as Renzo's enthusiasm seems to pick up at the thought of getting their first wands. "Yes. I do believe we are at their mercy, but I'd be lying if I wasn't hoping for one that looks cool. Mother's is quite powerful, but it is rather crooked." He snorted with a bit of laughter at the thought of it. "It looks rather silly." He finished through the chuckles. "Maybe a nice dark wood as well and I do hope it has an intricate handle." It was clear Lemmy had dreamt up his dream wand and it seemed Renzo had an idea as well. "What do you say, new friend? Should we ask the clerk to grab a couple for us to try?" Lemmy was bouncing on his feet at this point as a brand new wand was in the very near future!
