The best way to make money is by collecting your "scholarship" amount that is found in the common rooms page. As a first year, it should be 10 sickles, and it increases over the years.
Another way is by opening up a shop of a skill that you may have: coding, graphics or anything that is a sellable trade. If second year and higher buy something of your trade, you can receive the currency asked. First years can only give you potato peels (which can be sold back to the store for the currency you asked for).

For clarification- the money you get from the common room doesn't increase over the years. It used to a few years ago, when first years started at 1 sickle a day, but now it's 10 sickles for everyone
