A red fox with literally red fur that sported blonde and brown highlights made various noises to itself as it scurried around the London Quidditch Stadium in the snow that had been magically produced in order to create the wintery atmosphere. It didn't really seem like it knew what to make of itself; like it was a wild animal that had found itself trapped within the confines of a human-made structure and belonging there as little as the snow during the summer.

Since his first year at Hogwarts, Jack had dreaded making friends. He had learned better than to do so after his first instance of magic - or so he'd thought. But friends had a way of creeping up on you anyway, especially when you were a first year in a new school and as new as everyone else while looking to make your place in the world. Especially when you were someone as innately lonely as Jack.

Over the years, the redhead had managed to make some surprisingly strong bonds with classmates and schoolmates. He'd even learned about binding marks and formed a sort of pact with a young man a year older than him who his parents as adopted as his new older brother after his first year. Everything had been alright in the beginning, but then those friends slowly began to drift away and disappear - in some cases, literally. One had even died. And that new brother who Jack had grown so fond of had stopped attending Hogwarts a couple of years later so, even despite their ability to telepathically communicate and Jack's ability to know where his brother was at all times, they hardly saw each other anymore and gradually grew apart.

At one point, Jack had even been a part of a real love triangle in which no one had the same level of mutual affection for the other. So, in the end, none of the three involved had gotten what they'd wanted. Jack's crush had become cursed by a housemate of theirs who had turned out to be a hag in disguise, so the redhead had made a deal with her in his fourth year to undo any and all curses she had placed on said crush. That deal had involved bringing to life something he shouldn't have even against the warnings of the young women who had aided him in his quest. Nevertheless, he'd managed to achieve his goal and free his crush from the curses placed on them. And, nevertheless, that crush had left Hogwarts shortly after, leaving Jack with his old cloak, an empty dorm room, and an empty heart.

Despite having previously been passionately on top of his studies (while maintaining the appearance of being a slacker during class), the teen's heart just wasn't in school during most of his fifth year. Since he'd learned to become an animagus as soon as it'd been legally possible for him to - during the summer after his fourth year - he'd used a lot of his time in his newly-discovered fox form as an escape. He tried to free himself from the burdens of human emotions and the longing for human connection by running around as a carefree vulpine, hunting for prey, eating, sleeping, and occasionally causing mischief such as startling other students or 'borrowing' belongings.

No matter what he did, however, none of it was ever enough. Jack was left feeling like a shell of his former self. And though his original fear of making connections had been validated more than ever, he had nothing to rejoice about. All he could do was go around pretending to be as carefree and chaotic as his fox form suggested, supposedly freer than anyone who tied themselves down to other people. Too bad that freedom came at a very steep price - a price that might have included some portion of his sanity just to continue carrying on in the state that he was. Not that anyone needed to know.

On the second morning of summer camp, Jack had gotten up earlier than most in order to go out and explore the winter atmosphere of the stadium on his own. Having quickly shifted into fox form, he'd run around in the snow, yipping and making small, quiet noises absorbed by the white blanket that covered the ground while leaping and diving head-first into snow drifts on occasion. There were a few birds to chase and even some mice. But then he came across the dog.

Honestly, it looked more like a bear than a dog to him and at first he thought it must have been a bear. As he drew closer, however, he made out the fluffiness of the strange breed and the way its face seemed to sag sadly unlike any bear's he'd ever seen. Its fur consisted of white, black, and a variety of browns, but its eyes were startlingly blue. Jack's own hazel eyes began to shine in anticipation as he lowered himself to the ground...and took off.

The fox ran toward the dog at full speed until it got near enough to pounce, leaping upon the larger canine like it was a huge, furry trampoline with the aim of landing upon its back. If successful, the fox would have immediately begun to gnaw on the dog's closest ear, not biting hard but chewing as if the pair were just two kits from the same litter.

Jack may not have known what he was doing. He may not even have been able to tell if the dog was a real dog or another animagus. But even a lack of a desire to use the intelligence that he had once so highly prized could hardly suppress his fundamental desire to be playful and mischievous.

Life was surprisingly warm when you were a big fluffy dog. If the Summer camp had decided to be...well...summery, it was likely AJ would've been rather swelteringly hot covered in this much fur. Thankfully though, with the forced winter around the camp grounds he was able to give himself a nice little patch amongst the snow to settle and still be quite comfortably warm with the rays of the sun falling upon him.

Since becoming an Animagus during his leave of absence he'd been trying to take the form with reasonable frequency to get used to it. He'd been a bit shaky and unsteady at first, trying to adapt to walking on four legs with a completely different skeletal structure, but he was starting to get the hang of it. And now on this crisp wintery Summer morning he was the spitting image of a lazy, basking hound.

Until he felt a sudden weight land on his back, and something tug at his ear...

His layers of fluff weren't his only insulation. His dog form also had rather thick skin, due to this breed being specifically bred for fighting bears it only made sense. So when it came to the playful gnawing of the quick red fox that didn't quite jump over the lazy dog. It felt like little more than a particularly forceful gust of wind.

Still though, he wasn't exactly going to try and go back to sleep while this animal very slowly tried to tear his ear off. So with a borf of effort he rose up to standing height and attempted to throw the fox off of him. Part of him wondered if it could've been a random wild fox, but two questions came to mind. One, what would a wild fox be doing this close to the Quidditch stadium? And two, why would a wild fox start randomly harassing a massive dog? With that in mind, it was logical to assume this troublesome forest critter was one of his peers at Hogwarts or perhaps one of the students fromm other schools that were joining them at this camp.

"BORF!" A short, deep bark resounded out from him aimed towards the tricksy fox, more annoyed than aggressive. It was never fun to be suddenly awoken from a nap and he hoped whoever or whatever this fox was would understand that.

As the fox wasn't very big, especially not compared to the dog, it went flying as soon as the dog tried to throw him off. The fox yelped, landed in a pile of snow, and immediately ran back toward the dog as if eager to go on its favorite ride at the fair once again. Once it got to the dog, again, however, it halted at the sound of the deep, intimidating bark that was much more threatening-seeming now that the larger animal was standing at his full height. The fox seemed to hesitated, but only for an instant. Then, getting down on his front legs, he initiated a play bow, complete with wagging tail and excited whimpers.

Even if a normal dog might not have understood a play bow coming from a fox, or even if a fox might not have had an inkling of what a play bow was, Jack was willing to best that, assuming the dog was not some actual dog that had somehow gotten in (and why would it have been when dogs weren't allowed at Hogwarts, much less summer camp?) the human behind the animagus form would have recognized what the bow was trying to convey. That was, assuming, of course, that said human knew dogs enough to be aware of play bows, but Jack was willing to bet they would have been. Why would they have a dog animagus form if they weren't?

So...strangely enough...rather than an animal trying to communicate to another animal, as it appeared to anyone witnessing the scene involving the pair of canines, the behavior was actually one human attempting to communicate to another human through the assumed behavior of an animal; a human's understanding of that behavior, anyway.

Not that Jack claimed to understand animals at all, much less their methods of communication.

Moment by moment AJ was becoming more and more sure that whatever he was dealing with was indeed an Animagus and not just a regular fox. Even if a normal fox would be so bold as to attempt what the fuzzy orange fellow had just attempted, it certainly would have more survival instincts than to attempt to try it a second time after the warning that had just erupted.

AJ eyed the fox with a certain laziness in his gaze as the creatures bushy tail waved back and forth. He had so very much been enjoying his nap, but he supposed he was awake enough now regardless and clearly he was dealing with a bored student looking for something to do. He had no real desire to ruin the fun by doing something so simple as transforming back, not yet at least. So for a few more moments he merely stared at the fox and let out a low yawning whine.

He turned away as if he wasn't going to engage, taking a few pacing pawsteps along the cold snow in the opposite direction. But then he got into a digging position, and with precision began launching an artillery barrage of snow right at the fox's face.
