Atop a small hill covered in snow, Acacia sat shivering in a t-shirt and shorts. She had not packed for a winter camp, and though she had been looking forward to a hoildays away from the rainforests heat and humidity this was too far away. Give her a burning hot summer any day, anything but this terrible cold wet snow. It took a lot to drag her out of her nice warm sleeping bag this morning, but sadly her friends counted as a lot. Ariam had asked her to refree a mock dueling match between them and some Uagadou student, and she was more than happy to help them out with anything that helped her school towards victory. She just wished it wasn't so cold.

Beach towel set up on the hill (Hey, if she had packed it, she was going to use it), she looked down upon her handiwork from earlier. In an attempt to warm up she had gotten her shovel that was intended for nice warm beach sand and set it to work clearing a large circle in the disgusting wet snow. There, now no accusations of tripping over rocks could halt the duel. She gave a wave to the duelist in question that she had done all this hard labour for as they walked over. It wasn't nearly as important as an official match, but she was counting on them to at least put up a good showing. Castelo was going to win the summer sports this year.

Especially since it was her first year on the quidditch team. With all the practice she had done and was continuing to do, she was ready to show everyone just how well she could pass the quaffle. If things went well though, she wouldn't even have to be on the pitch at all. Her second string chaser status may not be in the limelight, but she was determined to do her job well.

The summer camp was enthralling for the time being. The opening feast was beautiful, the tents were enchanted with magic to look vastly different on the inside... yes, Zyair was enthralled. He had never seen such a vast display of magic, the spells his mother and sister cast were more so focused on 'housework' rather than 'grand display'. Er, not that he would complain, if spells for doing dishes didn't exist then that would mean he'd have to do them by hand.

During his first year at school, Zyair frequently sent letters to a young student in Castelobruxo, Ariam. Zyair had hoped that Ariam wouldn't mind the change in personality from letters to real life- he found it easier to express and dramatize emotions when they were written. But, it also just so happened that his pen-pal would also be attending this summer camp- which was really good, Zyair wouldn't have bothered to come if he didn't know a single person. Though he also knew that one girl from the toy store out in London. A Hogwarts student, Scout.

Ariam had mentioned in their letter that they had never had a proper dueling match before, but Zyair assumed that that information had changed during the school year. At the very least, maybe Ariam practiced with friends? A puppet? A doll? Actually, Incendio probably wouldn't work well on a doll, but there were plenty of other spells to cast.

"I appreciate you being the referee for this," Zyair started, nodding to whoever had agreed to referee. Of course he didn't know names, but he had perfect facial memory and had definitely seen her around the camp prior to this mock-duel. "Zyair Ona'je, by the way. It's probably important to know the name of both of the duelists."

Considering this was a mock duel, Zyair figured it'd be a good idea to go with the flow, rather than the meticulous planning he tended to do during actual duels. The change in pace was probably good for like... growing as a dueler, or something similar.

Summer camp has been great, sure the sudden realization that it was a winter camp set in summer was very unfortunate for some people. Looking at you Acacia. It was very fun for Ariam, all the new activities and unfamiliar people made this the best camp Ariam has ever been to! Though that was a given since it was their first. Another Great thing about summer camp is that Zyair, Ariam's quill pal, and them can finally have that mock duel mentioned in one of their letters to each other. Back when the idea was first proposed Ariam didn't even have any real dueling experience. They didn't quite understand the appreciation for sport till coming to school, and even then it took a while. But now they even made it into the Castlelo school team. They set up a spot on the hill and get Acacia to be the referee, how she knows how to ref a duel Ariam has no idea. She's a quiddich player after all, every time Ariam asked her to go watch duels or watch them duel she always had something to do, mostly training. Well she did volunteer to do this, I'm sure she knows what she's doing. Ariam always gets worked up before a duel, the nervousness always get to them a while before the show. Though like every other time, once they step on to the dueling grounds all that disappears. Ariam holds their wand and gets ready for the duel, "Good luck, Ariam." Zyair said to them, just before the start, "And to you too, my friend." Ariam replied with as smile, thinking about which spell to cast.

Acacia nodded back at Ariams new opponent, giving him a smile. She might be willing to cheer so loud the entire camp heard for her friend, but she was meant to be an impartial referee here. Impartial, but still a castelo student who wanted to see Ariam get some practice in for the official duels. Dueling mattered less than quid in her head as far as summer sports went, but it was the principle of the thing. "Its no problem at all" she replied. Cupping her hands around her face, she yelled "Alright, wands ready... begin!".

Now that she saw an actual duel playing out right before her eyes, she did mildly regret skipping watching duels with Ariam for more quid training. It was no broom sport, but that didn't make it any less impressive to watch. Zyair's first move was to send a shower of green sparks right at Ariam, hitting them and leaving them blinking in its wake. She winced. Not a great start to the duel for her friend. Ariam however had sent off an impressive knockback jinx of their own, which sadly missed its target. Dammit. It was a close call though. She had faith in her friends ability to turn this around though.

Going with the flow was uncommon for Zyair. Correct calculations were always rewarded with a win, and he happened to like calculating and winning. If he were to cast spells mindlessly, he was sure he'd lose. Planning ahead allowed him to think about his counteraction to a spell or how to react to each situation he would find himself in while dueling.

Fire ignites his robes? He knows the extinguishing charm by heart. Sparks fly in front of his face? His feet have already begun moving. It's not always a guaranteed save but he's learned the practice by heart. It comes from a combination of experience and planning, although Zyair likes to say it's primarily the latter.

"Don't worry, Ariam," Zyair calls out, "you've got this."

He never saw the point in shit-talking during duels or sports in general, really. While he knew there were plenty of people who saw it as a joke and some silly fun, he felt it was rude to talk down your opponents. It'd be embarrassing, too, if you were crude and still lost in the end. He'd rather keep his head on his neck and be polite. Sports were not always about winning, anyway- even if Zyair did like the feeling of success.

Not to mention... Zyair still didn't know if Ariam had had much experience in dueling yet. He wasn't going to give his friend a handicap but it did give him more of a reason to be encouraging. There was probably a motto out there about always being kind to your opponents or at the very least something like it. He'd try to rack his brain to find an example, but this was supposed to be an 'acting first, thinking later' kind of event, so he filed it away in his head to think about later when he wasn't casting spells on the fly.

As Acacia yelled out the words signaling the beginning of the duel Ariam began to move. they deiced to quickly throw out a knockback jinx, in past duels the strategy of attacking first has proven to be work well for them, but not this time it seems. As they witnessed their spell miss the target Ariam couldn't help but feel frustrated, I am not off to a good start... The feeling only got worse as Ariam watched Zyair's green sparks charm hit them. "¡Hostia!" Literally meaning host it is a spanish exclamation of surprise Ariam quietly swore as they got hit by the spell. Back home their parents would never have taught them swears but at school it's different. Ariam remembers they got taught some by an upperclassmen they meet back in the middle of the school year. I hope their doing well. The same change also happened in Ariam's dueling style. Their parents always told them to plan for any and all scenario, trust the numbers and statistics and never your human instincts. Though after their first duels Ariam already noticed a flaw, they seems to never be able to let loose and adapt to the situations. All the uptight and formal ways of behaving was starting to drag them down, so Ariam got rid of it, relieing on their instincts to guide them. And so far it hasn't failed me yet! Zyair's encouraging words pulled Ariam out of their thoughts about spells and duels for a brief moment. Not quite knowing what to reply Ariam smiled at him with a nod, hoping it would convey their message of acknowledgement.

It was nice of Zyair to be so friendly while attempting to hit Ariam with a Flipendo. Violence with a smile seemed to be a good description of this duel so far. Attempt would be the wrong word here though- Zyair's Flipendo was very much a success. Ariam was whacked in the chest by the force of it, and knocked a few feet backwards. The first hit of the duel meant that this friendly competition was well and truly underway. It was certainly turning out to be something to watch. Though it might just be because she had never seen a proper official duel before, she still found this one to be edge-of-her-beach-towel veiwing.

Speaking of her beach towel, the snow was starting to get it wet. Ugh, this summer camp was barley summer at all. She almost missed Ariams spell in her disgust at her new damp seating, but looked up just in time to see. The spell in question didn't seem to be aimed at Zyair, but rather the air around them. Probably a good thing considering Ariam had just had some very bright green sparks near their face. The view of the two duelists was obscured by the smoke coming out of their wand in seconds, which was honestly kind of a let down for their one-woman audience. Impressive yes, but how would she watch now?

After Ariam got hit by Zyair's spell they could feel how their senses were affected. The green sparks spell left Ariam feeling dizzy and a bit disoriented, knowing whatever spell they chose to cast towards Zyair will probably miss, they decided to cast Fumos, the smokescreen spell. Sure the spell will also affect Ariam but they deemed it to be worth it. They already got hit by Zyair's knockback jinx and got hurt, what more can they lose. Speaking of the knockback jinx, it hurt. Ariam got knocked back - of course they did, that effect is literally in the name - and they fell on the floor. They did get up pretty quickly so apart from the pain it wasn't that annoying. As they stood up Ariam took a little bit of time organising themselves, sure no one was there to see and it is literally in the middle of a duel, but they really can't stand messed up collar on their shirts. Ariam also did finally remember their one and only audience Acacia is still watching. Oh no, I forgot she's still watching, how will she see the duel play out when there's smoke everywhere? Though that concern was quickly resolved by the faith Ariam has in her, I'm sure she can deal, it's not like me or Zyair is going to have any foul play going on. Ariam still quickly yelled out an apology, "Sorry Acacia!" before moving and getting ready for their next action.

Zyair considered his Flipendo a lucky hit, it was a split-second decision he had made just before his entire view was consumed with smoke. Jeez, how was either he or Ariam supposed to cast a spell in this smoke? At first, Zyair thought of calling out but... that could give away his position in the smoke. He could take a different risk and cast something anyway, even if he wasn't entirely sure where to aim.

But that was the point of this entire duel for Zyair, wasn't it? He had to remind himself the whole premise of this was to cast first think later. It seemed to be working out for him so far, anyway. Maybe if he became more in tune with his gut rather than his brain, he could actually rely on it during more official duels. Ones where he was going against someone he wanted to win against, or at the very least would be annoyed if he lost to.

And poor Acacia, moderating such an event must be awfully difficult if there's smoke laden on the field. Hopefully she'll still be able to see the two of them even through the mess. Smoke was the most inconvenient thing that could've happened for a duel, Zyair swore he hated it when he was forced to cast without a specific target.

At least they weren't old enough to know Lumos Maxima, that'd be Zyair's worst enemy- and it'd be one he'd be unable to avoid in the upcoming years. Lame.

Squinting through the smoke, she tried to catch a glimpse of the two duelists. She heard Ariam yell out an apology, probably for blocking her view of what was clearly the duel of the year. "You're fine" she yelled back "Less talking, more spells!". It was probably fair enough to root for her friend at this point, since they appeared to be losing. Hopefully this was them getting all of their loosing out of the way before the official duels. Although of course she would support her friend no matter what happened, she was a very competitive person at heart.

Laughter emerged from the smokey haze that was the makeshift dueling arena, and Acacia wondered what on earth they were doing. Were they even still dueling? Maybe it was some kind of spell. She wasn't exactly known for her ability to pay attention in class, especially if the classroom in question had windows. She tried of course, but open skies called her name much louder than stuffy spellwork. It was crazy to think that a few years back, even turning up in class would be considered a "big achievement" for her by muggle teachers. Now here she was, sitting in the snow during the middle of an English summer, watching her friend duel and smiling. Hope was a wonderful thing to have carried her all this way.

Thankfully for them though, Ariam seemed determined to turn this duel around. Though she couldn't see whether the spell hit its target, she heard a fierce tapping right after it. What on earth was that noise? It almost sounded like dancing, but that couldn't be possible. Unless Ariam and Zyair were playing some kind of prank on her. Zyair is now tap dancing (Tarantallegra)
