It was a rather rough night before Emily was due to be on the train back home, for a lot of reasons as well. The school year came and went just like that. The whole experience felt like she had just blinked, almost as if it was a fleeting dream. She couldn't sleep a wink knowing she wouldn't be back at Hogwarts for two months. While she wouldn't trade a thing to see "Auntie" on the train platform and simply run up and tackle her with snugs and hugs, she still couldn't grapple with the fact that she wouldn't be able to see that glorious castle for a while. She wouldn't be able to feed her critters whenever she went on walks around the grounds. She wouldn't be able to scout the Forbidden Forest, and as a muggle-born going back to her muggle life, she wouldn't be able to tell anyone aside from her family about any of what she had experienced - not for a short while anyway but even still, she couldn't trust herself not to burst over with excitement and recite everything that's happened in the last year.
She slumped back against the seat of the carriage in a huff. Good things come in multitudes but all end quicker than bad ones, she believed. She stared absentmindedly out the window, finding comfort in the scenery as it whizzed past her. Emily always said it to herself time and time again but nature and greenery were always the key to happiness, especially when they had such a profound effect of cheering her up. Already she found her lips curving into a reassuring smile as she felt her spirits being lifted.
All of a sudden it wasn't so bad. She'd be seeing most of her buddies at summer camp in a couple weeks time anyway. Knowing them it'll be as if she never left Hogwarts given the vibes and energy they all shared.
A deep breath silenced her worries.
Yeah. We're grand. It's all good.

Matilde had woken bright and early this morning. She was was so excited about going home. Home. Tonight she’d get to sleep in her attic bedroom. The first thing she was going to do when she got home, Matilde decided, was pet her animals. Every single one of the pets at the O’Fionnagan farm would be getting a hug from this Hufflepuff.
There were so many things she was certainly going to miss about the magical castle. But after all, she would be back in two months.
Despite waking up early, Matilde was late. As usual. She’d gotten distracted talking to some friends, and then saying goodbye to one of her teachers. Before she knew it, she was one of a handful of children left on the platform. With a little yelp, she quickly boarded the train, her trunk in one hand and her pet rabbit in the other.
When she finally entered the train, nearly every compartment was already full. Finally she found one with just one girl inside. Matilde didn’t know much about Emily Shephard, though she had seen her around plenty, what with her being a fellow Hufflepuff.
“Hi Emily!” Matilde said as she opened the compartment’s door. “Is this seat taken?” She asked, gesturing to the bench opposite the girl with a smile.

Emily perked up when a sudden voice came in through the carriage. Looking up, she saw her fellow Hufflepuff, Matilde, poke her head into the space, clearly looking for a seat to snag. Never one to say no to anyone - much less so someone from her own House - and being the ever welcoming soul she was regardless, Emily grinned as she shuffled a few things out of the way to allow Matilde to pop in and sit down. It provided a good opportunity to better gel with her, given their brief and limited interactions with each other throughout the school year.
"Join the party, Matilde!" She gestured warmly to the seats in the space.
Both girls settled into the carriage as the train continued to whizz along the tracks. Flashes of trees and hills passed fleetingly by the window as they kept course towards home.
Like many conversations that have taken place between Emily and another person, the chat kicked off with Emily's routine string of questions - only this time it was the "End of Year" edition.
"So what did you make of the school year? Did it live up to your expectations? I know it certainly exceeded mine...! It's hard to say goodbye. It feels too soon to leave now..."
