@Jude LumiereNormally, somber and Danielle aren't ever in the same paragraph, let alone the same sentence, but today, somber was the perfect way to describe Dani's mood. The normal Danielle, the happy and cheerful one, was nowhere to be found. Trudging down towards the Great Lake, she held on tightly to the locket around her neck. Inside, a precious picture of Danielle and her mother. In the pocket of her jeans, another picture, though this one was a family photo.
Finally reaching her destination of the Great Lake, Danielle sat down on a large rock, pulling the family photo from her pocket and staring at it wistfully. Her grandparents, mother, and father were in the back row while Danielle and her two siblings were in front, arms around each other and large smiles on their faces. It was the two-year anniversary of her mother's death, and the absence of her mom in her life hadn't gotten any easier.
Danielle set the picture under her leg, choosing the spot so the light breeze wouldn't fly the picture away. Once she was sure the precious photo was secure, she reached her hands up to take the locket off her neck, opening it up to see the last photo she and her mother ever took together.
Danielle teared up, quietly sniffling as she stared at her mother's smiling face, looking so alive, well, and as happy as she could ever be. Dani continued to stare at her mother's face, trying hard to memorize every detail so she wouldn't ever forget her face. She then closed her eyes, trying to remember her mother's sweet voice, tears escaping her closed eyes and rolling down her cheek at the realization that she could only remember small snippets.

@Jude LumiereHearing the voice behind her, Danielle quickly wiped her tears and turned to face the newcomer. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm okay." she said, plastering on a not-so-convincing smile.
She looked at the girl, observing her features to keep herself from crying again. Her golden blonde hair shone in the sunlight, and her blue-grey eyes were stunning. She was a little more on the tall and lanky side, and she had thicker eyebrows and a small pointed nose. Oh, did Dani mention she was also really pretty? With her natural beauty, Danielle was sure the girl had to be part-veela.
Glancing away from the girl for a second (Dani didn't want her to think she was staring), she looked back before introducing herself. "Danielle Alden, Ravenclaw. It's a pleasure." she said, putting on a more genuine smile this time.
It was then she noticed her precious locket was still in her hands. Quickly and carefully, she brought the necklace around her neck, clasping it in the back before moving her hair out of the way, her hand lingering on the locket charm itself before falling back to her side, her vision going blurry with tears for a short second before she blinked them away.
"I'm sorry." Dani said quietly. Normally she was the complete opposite of her emotions now. She felt bad that the girl had to meet her on this day.
