Kitchen
Nestled directly beneath the grandeur of the Great Hall lies a bustling hive of activity- the kitchen. While not a popular place for visitors, the kitchen operates with remarkable precision, a well-oiled machine. Metaphorically, of course, as behind the scenes, a dedicated team of over one hundred house-elves prepared the feasts that grace the Great Hall.
This high-ceilinged room mirrors the layout of its counterpart above. Five large tables dominate the center of the room, arranged in the exact placement as the house and staff tables above. The tables in both rooms are charmed, and food is delivered to the upstairs hall after being placed on the kitchen tables. At the room's far end roars a towering brick fireplace, the key tool for transmuting raw ingredients into delectable dishes. The stone walls, virtually obscured by an extensive array of pots and pans, absorb the heat of the fire, keeping the culinary basement hideaway warm and toasty in the cold months.
To the left of the kitchen entrance is a wall stacked high with small barrels. Not for storing food, instead these wooden structures have been expertly manipulated by the elves to function as their homes. Small doors and windows can be seen on the outside of them, and in recent years the trend among house-elves has been to paint the exterior of their barrel home in a way they feel represents their personality. These homes are assumed to be larger on the inside, charmed through some means of house-elf magic, but no wizard has ever been granted a glimpse inside.
Considering the combination of food, knives, and fire that lie in the kitchen, it is intentionally shielded from Hogwarts' mostly teenage inhabitants. Its entrance lies concealed in the basement of the school, accessible through a corridor adorned with portraits featuring food-themed paintings and sculptures. Entry requires interacting with a painting depicting a bowl of fruit; the door is revealed only when the painting's pear is playfully tickled, causing it to giggle and transform into the doorknob, the gate allowing one to pass into the culinary haven.
