Magic was HARD. Tommy was a wizard born. His family would expect him to do better than this. He needed to practice. Recently, in Herbology, Tommy had learned the Incendio spell, but he was too worried about using it without having a safe way to stop any fires he made. Tommy was, after all, very mindful of the safety of himself, and the other students at Hogwarts.

Thankfully, he learned just the spell in his most recent Herbology class. Extinguo would deal with any fires that went awry. Still trying to minimize the risk, Tommy went to the Great Lake to practice his Fire-Making Spell. It had rained the day prior. The dew on the grass would be yet another safety feature put in place. Tommy refused to be one of those students that would cause a fire in their first year. He had heard countless stories of first years doing so from the upper years. Rumours of a great fire in house Hufflepuff, but that was only rumours, right?

Tommy began trying to cast Incendio, "in-SIN-dee-o". His wand did not react. He knew the issue, the pronunciation was wrong. "in-SEN-dee-o". This time, the spell worked as it was meant to, well, to a degree. It wasn't so much a jet of flames as a torch, only slightly bigger than that of a muggle lighter (not that Tommy knew what a lighter was).

He truly was a sad excuse for a wizard. Tommy held no ill-will or harboured any negative thoughts toward Muggle born wizards or witches, but he knew those with superiority complexes may describe his magical ability as 'muggle behaviour', something he had heard in passing from an upper year Hufflepuff boy.

Tommy tried to pick this spot out of the sheer embarrassment of his poor magical affinity, hopefully if someone did come upon him, they would be nice. Worse case scenario, Tommy would lie to them saying he was simply trying to practice control over the spell and see how weak of a flame he could muster.

What was in the Great Lake that made it so relaxing? Was it the ambience? The sounds of the small waves hitting the shores? Or perhaps the fact that it was a great place to practice with not a lot of people hanging around aside from those wanting to go for a swim despite the rules saying you can’t? Maybe all of those.

For Raizel, it was because it’s the perfect place to practice aside from the confined spaces back in the duelling club and it’s a nice change of pace for someone who usually hangs around there almost 24/7 if she didn’t have classes. Usually, she would see a couple of students swimming around but this time, close to where her usual practice spot was, someone practicing spells instead. She couldn’t tell what spell just yet as she was just getting closer until she saw that small jet of flame that was produced by this student’s wand.

That was… let’s say, less impressive than what she sees on a daily basis. Then again, there are those who struggle even when using the most basic of spells and even experts fail, to some extent at least. “Having a rough time?” She spoke up just as she was close enough for this student to hear her, setting down her bag on a nearby stone and sitting there, watching and waiting for a response.

"A rough time? Oh, certainly not!" Tommy stuttered as he almost dropped his wand in shock. "I ... I was simply seeing the smallest flame I could muster!" Tommy had already prepared a lie for the situation, but he didn't expect to have to use it the very first time he cast a spell. Talk about unlucky.

He wasn't sure if the student was mocking him or not. What made Tommy more unsure was that the girl was wearing red. Surely she was in Gryffindor. Tommy had not interacted with someone from this house yet. He had nothing to base their general personalities off of. Saying that, he knew Slytherin often got stereotyped into being an unfriendly or unkind house, but Tommy was kind. Sure, he lied... A LOT, but only for the greater good... or when it would benefit him... The claims against his house had no real base and were wildly exaggerated. He decided he would not judge the girl before interacting with her.

Tommy regained his composure, straightening his back and speaking from his chest. "Pardon me fellow student, you caught me off guard. Perchance you would like to show me how the spell is properly cast using all your arcane prowess?" Tommy tried to be as professional and as posh as he could sound while asking the student, just in case she was from an upperclass family. He knew the mannerisms taught by his mother, so why not use them?

The boy was surprised, which is understandable. Who wouldn’t when someone suddenly spoke to you when you thought you were alone and focusing on something. His response was amusing… in a way. “Oh? That’s the first time I heard someone say they were deliberately trying to create weaker versions of the spell.” Not like she can see through the lie but she finds it rather strange. That’s not a response you get to hear everyday. But of course, she’s not going to linger on the thought longer. If that’s what he said then sure.

She’s not the type to get into other people’s business unless it was truly needed to interfere with it. She’d rather not get into conflicts either. She had enough of those already and truth be told, they were starting to get exhausting. She rummages through her satchel, looking for whatever she could read, preferably, a book of spells and maybe try out the advance ones that she found. This boy’s voice made her pause and turn to look at him.

The way he spoke that time was kind of stiff, not really what she’s used to. She’d rather have a casual conversation with someone rather than one filled with formalities. It was rather annoying/ That’s just because it reminds her of her Pureblood purist grandmother who kind of speaks the same way. Thank Merlin she hardly sees her now but she doubts she’d even give her a sliver of attention. She sighed, scratching the back of her head as she pulled out her wand. “I can show you how the spell works but would that even help you figure out how to produce smaller flames?” she asked, still finding it weird that that’s what he is trying to achieve.

The girl seemed to believe what Tommy had said, or at least she was kind enough to not call him completely out on his lie. A success. "Well..." Tommy trailed off, thinking on your feet can be hard, but maybe this would look like Tommy was pondering the girl's offer.

"I suppose you could show me the largest flame you can make, then try to show me the smallest flame you can muster." This would sound perplexing to probably the greatest of wizards. Why would anyone want a weak spell... Why?

Tommy knew just what a logical reason might be. "This an exercise of control. Being able to determine the size of the flame allows me to better control the fire for more purposes." What these reasons might be, Tommy would not state any. Perhaps the girl would be able to think for herself of some or it would make him seem wise and mature for his age... Or clueless and a complete simpleton when it comes to magic (much closer to the truth).

Tommy thought to himself, what could he read from the girl's personality? She seems kind. She had offered to help him, after all. Less formal than some students. Honestly, a relief for Tommy. He hated being formal and defaulted to it in uncertain situations. This was a bit of a blunder for him this time. Maybe he came across as a snobby rich kid? Technically, he was rich. His family did live in one of London's richest districts, Westminster. He hated the formalities of his family though, and he didn't know how well off he was due to never having talked about home life with students from less fortunate families. Tommy still had much to learn about the harsh realities world, from blood purist to those in economic hardship.

Raizel stared at the boy for a while, still finding it strange how he wants to see weaker flames. To be honest, this Gryffindor is not fond of weaker spells. Her aim is to get better at it which means the stronger the better. Sure, it would be beneficial to learn its weaker form for better control but she’d rather put everything she has on an offensive spell and learn to control that instead. “Incendio is already the weaker flame.” She started, pointing at the boy with her wand, a smile on her face. She then shifted her gaze, redirecting her wand towards the water. “Incendio!”

The flames were just as strong as she remembers, perhaps it’s because of her own magical potential or whatever it is. She watched as a stream of flame tore through the air and quickly dissipated just as it hit the water with a sizzle. This reminded her of the time she was here, in her first year, practicing this very same spell and before she even knew it, she was surrounded by friends, friends that she doesn’t know anymore as their faces had become a blur in her memories. The only one left was Fang Hui-Ying. “If you want bigger flames…” she paused, tapping her wand on her palm. “You’re better off doing its stronger version.” Once more, she pointed her wand towards the water, focusing more on this one as it’s a spell that requires as such.

“Incendio Duo!” This one was better, stronger than the regular Incendio. In duelling, once it hits, your opponents will be in for a bad time dealing with burns and clothes on fire. The regular one, not really that much. They still hurt though just not as bad as Incendio Duo. “So, what other purposes do you have in mind for weaker flames?” Raizel asked as she turned around to face the boy, crossing her arms. “If you’re just trying to ignite a piece of clothing though, there’s the Clothing Ignition spell that.” She still sees weaker flames having no point when it comes to Incendio. The flames produced by it are already enough for most purposes that require fire. Starting campfires, maybe igniting a stove etc.

Remembering how she first saw him though, she began to grow skeptical of this whole ‘weaker flames for better control thing.’ It looked like he was struggling earlier in producing those flames. Could’ve come up with a better excuse if he’s trying to hide that though. She sighed, walking back to where she was planning on sitting earlier. “Well, since I showed you those, let’s see what you can do.” She told him as she went quiet to observe.

'Why do some wizards have to be so snooty about spells?' Tommy wondered to himself. Yes, he was at a magic school but surely he wasn't the ONLY one bad at spells. How could he hope to garner a reputation for being a great member of Slytherin if he embarrassed himself with his magic? There were more things interesting than magic, namely Herbology and quidditch. he had PLANNED to practice alone, but now he felt like he couldn't due to the girl being there.

To Tommy, no good could come from practicing in front of a stranger who could make fun of his magic or, worse, tell other students about how bad his magic was. "No, I think I need to research more of what you talked about before I continue to practice." Tommy tried to maintain the friendliest face he could, despite his naturally unfriendly exterior. The girl had given him a lot of insight into spells, and he did want to read up on them first. The risk of continuing to practice was too great for Tommy. Something could easily go wrong. How could he trust a girl he had just met?

"In the meantime, what are you reading?" Tommy hoped it would be something interesting to him, maybe a herbology book. It then crossed his mind. The two had still not introduced themselves properly to one another. "Oh, my name is Tommy Patterson. I'm a first year in Slytherin, my favourite class is herbology and I want to be a beater." A bit of a scrambled and disjointed introduction, but the girl didn't seem to be formal, so he determined he did not have to keep up formalities.

“Is that so…” She responded, eyes on the younger boy and kind of finding it disappointing that he refused to do some practice. He came here to do just that right? She saw him earlier. She shrugged. Oh well. If that was her, she would try those things that other people showed her. She’s more of a practical learner but alas, not everyone likes to do that and would prefer to learn the theories behind the spells for. This boy is giving such an impression. He seems like the type who would spend most of his time studying that than actually putting them into practice.

“Nothing much. Just some books about spells. Kind of hoping to find more… advanced ones.” Most of the ones in the books that she found were either too difficult for her current level or the ones that she had already learned. She wanted to give the books another try, thinking that she might’ve missed one or two. If not, it’s the best time to just try and master the ones that she knows.

Once she pulled out her old tattered notebook, she turned her head to the boy who introduced himself as Tommy. “Raizel Voltrouz, second year, Gryffindor.” she said back as it is only fair for her to introduce herself. “Oh Herbology, yeah, that’s a great subject.” Not her favorite subject but not something that she hates. In fact, it’s one of the subjects that she enjoys probably because of her mother’s hobbies. “And a beater? Have you signed up for your house’s team yet?” she asked. “Might as well do it before the waitlist gets long. Good luck though, hope you make it to your team soon.” she smiled at him. "Quidditch can be wild but it's quite fun."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Raizel!" The girl did seem nice. Signing up for the quidditch team was a bit of a sore spot for Tommy. He could not help but look a little dejected. "I did try signing up for the team, sadly there is a really long wait list for every position. "

Tommy really did want to play quidditch. He was determined to make the team, but how long it would take was the biggest question. The girl had mentioned that quidditch can be wild, but quite fun. He wondered for a second if she was a player herself. The girl was also looking to study higher-level spells. Maybe she was a duelist? Or perhaps she was in broom racing and used both spells and a broom? There was a lot of possibility with this girl, was good at magic and seemed kind and well spoken but not snobby.

"Are you in any of the three sporting clubs? If not, do you want to be in one? Maybe if the girl was interested in either broom sports, they could train together? Surely, there would be some crossover between the broom racing and quidditch. If she was interested in dueling, maybe if they got to know each other more, he would feel comfortable enough to ask her for some tutoring with magic. For now, he was still too on guard. His mind flashed to a recent with a student from another house. At first, Tommy tried to be his friend until the other student began to bully him. This fateful encounter would make him much more wary of other students, at least for now.

“Yeah… that happens all the time. It’s why it’s best to get your name in there once you reach the requirements of being in a team.” Having your name on top of the list is the best position to be in if you’re planning on joining. While teams rarely change their roster due to their active members, you’ll never know when that spot opens up and with graduation just around the corner, she can bet there will be space at least unless there weren’t 7th years in the team.

As for the requirement that she speaks of, she knows broom racing and duelling requires for the person to know at least some spells. What are you gonna use to hinder your opponents if you don’t know any? Sure, rocks can be used in broom racing and so is blatching but it’s still much better when you use spells. “For your question though… no, not currently in a team.” she answered as she went back to skimming through her notes.

She used to be but that’s not something that she’s fond to talk about, especially to some random boy that she just met. “Signed up with broom racing though. It’s just a waiting game from there on.” Nothing new, she had spent most of her time waiting to be in the duelling team before and she endured that wait. How she could give up her position in the sport that she wanted was beyond her. It was a must… or else, she won’t be going anywhere. To heck what her grandmother told her, she’ll show her that there is something she can excel in.
