A Fascination With the Dark

Emily stood looking out onto the Great Lake. The air was warm while the sky was glazed over with the early summer haze. The water was still with remnants of the sparkle of the sunshine in the veils through the clouds. She could see the Forbidden Forest on one side of her and her eyes began to linger.
"If we decide to seek or even engage with these unconscious aspects of ourselves, these darker shadows, these ill-formed, half-created, seemingly ugly monsters of our unconscious, perhaps we can refine them, perhaps even reshape them into something exquisitely beautiful and useful."
Her Tarot Deck was tucked neatly in her satchel but the words in the handbook with it had and continued to follow her for the last three years.
Duality. Light. Dark. Happiness. Monsters. Humanity.
Emily knew that good and bad wasn't so black and white. A common thread that she had seen subtly woven in all the stories she had ever read. Men becoming beasts against their will and fighting to resist succumbing to them. People fighting such monsters because they didn't understand them, because they couldn't sympathise with their pain.
And that's before even touching on the "human" side - how that side acts symbiotically with the "monster" side. How they cope mentally as well as physically. How much hate must they have for not being in control or only having half of it. What about self love? Does that come from a wholeness of both parts or is it hidden by a façade, pretending that it's good when the person is in fact anxious?
After weeks on reading about inhuman creatures and special species, everything that Emily has learnt has been a huge eye opener. Even her encounter with Scout was helping to weave everything together. Learning of how her father was turned and how both he and Scout had to hide it. Scout seemed quite comfortable about it - at least, that's how it seemed when Emily spoke with her that day - but her father... to be turned just like that, out of nowhere. How could anyone deal with that? Emily couldn't even fathom. Not as the plain, simple, somewhat magically talented Muggle she is.
But as the water in the lake rippled gently with the life that existed under the surface, a small but powerful bout of frustration began to rise in Emily's being. Discrimination and misunderstandings were one thing... but to not be able to sympathise - or better yet, empathise - with these creatures. Emily couldn't bare not understanding the pain, the struggles, the consequences of having such heritage, if not being a pure species. She wanted peace for them. She wanted hope for them. She wanted to be one to help give that hope.
It's been three weeks since the first time Emily ventured into the forest. It had only been two trips so far but Emily knew it wasn't enough. Not if she was to find what she was looking for. She cared for every living creature even if she were to be afraid of them. She wanted to outgrow that fear. She wanted everyone to outgrow that fear.
"The best thing to do is to make them more conscious, to seek them out and maybe even to make friends with them."
That's exactly what Emily wanted. She wanted to be friends with these creatures, no matter how much blood of those creatures ran through their veins.
A small smile pricked at her lips.
Perhaps that's why I was put in Hufflepuff instead of Ravenclaw...
She looked down at her hands where the Camo Cloak sat before looking back up in the direction of the forest and a wave of conviction emanated from her being. She knew where she would be going tonight.
