Here came the very last thing Giselle was going to buy that day, her wand! This was the part Giselle was looking the most forward to. Without a wand, a witch or wizard will not be able to perform magic, because performing magic with a wand would be much easier than performing wandless magic. Giselle remembered her dear dad telling her that you can’t perform without a wand unless you are skilled at wandless magic. Not many wizards know that skill, Giselle thought desperately.

It was now sunset. Giselle and her mother had better hurry up soon. In an hour’s time, the family would be meeting up again. Her father and sister had gone to buy prank objects from Weasley’s wizard wheezes, which would entertain her sister Evanna up nicely. Evanna becomes bored when she has to go with others to buy other people’s supplies. Still, Giselle loved Evanna very much.

Entering the crowded shop of Ollivanders, Giselle found out that the queue was extremely long. ‘One, two, three…’ Giselle counted as she spoke. Soon, she found out that there were seventeen people ahead of her. What a long queue! Perhaps she was going to go to another shop first if she had any more school supplies left to buy. She had preserved her wand for last, so that she could focus concentratedly for the fact that Giselle was looking forward to buying a new wand most!

Finally, it was her turn. Mr. Ollivander took a measurement tape and started measuring her height. After a while, Mr. Ollivander put away the tape and gave her a wand, which Giselle waved. All so suddenly, a table of papers started flying in a very messy order. Giselle was so shocked and nearly dropped the wand she was holding. ‘I’m sorry, Mr. Ollivander,’ Giselle said. ‘Don’t worry, it is clearly not your fault. The wand chooses the wizard, remember,’ said a happy Mr. Ollivander. Giselle was so surprised that Mr. Ollivander was smiling.

Letting out a loud sigh of relief that I did not do anything wrong, Mr. Ollivander gave me another wand and told me to try it. This time, the blocks in the walls shifted and fell. ‘Certainly not!’ Mr. Ollivander said.

After about half the wands in the shop tested and failed, Mr. Ollivander asked, ‘Perhaps we would have more luck with this one?’ and shoved it into my hands. ‘It is 28,4 cm, dragon heartstring core, and walnut wood, rather bendy.’ When I waved the wand, instead of something strange happening, like a long sheet of papers messing themselves up, a warm light came from the wand, as though giving out its loyalty to Giselle. It was the loveliest sensation Giselle had ever had. ‘That’s it!’ cried Mr. Ollivander. ‘Your wand!’

Turning to her waiting mother, Giselle paid two galleons to Mr. Ollivander and they set off to meet up with Giselle’s father and sister. Clutching her wand tightly tucked under her arm, pushing her trunk with the other arm, the family were to meet up again at the entrance to Diagon Alley.

In life, you just have to break rules take risks and move on to the next step.
