Galahad's Furry Gallant Friend
It’d been six months since Galahad had set foot in Diagon Alley, which was a long time for him. He’d just been extremely busy with his work at Hogwarts and once he was done with the students and staff members who were his charge, he was just completely out of energy. Today was different though, today he was going there for him and him alone. Well, he might also grab something for Orion. He was also very bummed because he hadn’t been able to spend much time with Orion, they were just so busy. Maybe he should talk to Mags about swapping Orion over to Gryffindor for one of his professors. Nothing like a little special treatment for your favorite professor.
As everyone does, Galahad had started at the Leaky Cauldron. He said hello to a couple of former colleagues who happened to be at the watering hole during their lunch and had two of his favorite drinks: 2 ounces of firewhiskey, half an ounce of simple syrup, plus green tea over ice - he called it a Welsh Greentini. Feeling sufficiently picked up, he continued down Diagon Alley, looking in the windows of most of the shops as he went but entering few. He did make his obligatory stop at Flourish & Blotts. He left with two news books under his arms: 24 Potions You Can’t Live Without in 2024 and Modern Trends in the Dark Arts. He may not be an Auror anymore, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to keep up on the newest trends in his field.
He briefly stopped in Quality Quidditch Supplies to check out new brooms. He’d unfortunately managed to crash his a couple of years ago and hadn’t bothered replacing it because he just Apparated everywhere. He’d been looking at a Twigger 90 but he decided it was too much of an extravagance at this point (not that he had anything to spend money on - he was unmarried with no kids).
Finally, Galahad arrived at his actual destination: the Magical Menagerie. Galahad hadn’t kept a pet in years. He loved animals but when he was an Auror he was out of the house all day every day. His work really was his life and he didn’t think it would be fair to keep a pet that was isolated most of the time. Now that he was at Hogwarts, however, he could let a pet roam the castle when he was busy working.
He arrived at the venerable old shop and the sights and smells took him back to his youth and the pets he had as a child. The shop was surprisingly quiet given the number of animals within its walls. He nodded to the shopkeeper and was about to begin his search when someone came from behind him, “Galahad - Galahad Browne?” He turned around and saw an older witch with gray hair down to her shoulders wearing a navy blue traveling cloak. She had dark blue eyes and a scar on her left cheek from a deep cut. He should know, he’d given it to her when she’d been under the possession of a dark object.
“Margie,” he said smiling warmly at her, “It’s great to see you again.” He reached out and gave her a hug which she happily returned.
“It’s great to see you too Galahad, how are you? I heard you were over at Hogwarts now, working with Orion again.” She said with a roguish wink.
He tried to grin innocently but failed miserably, “I’ve been there about a year now, Head of Gryffindor and all the fun things that entails.”
“Well I’m glad you’re doing well.” She said with a warm smile before looking down at her watch. “Oh I’m sorry but I have to get back to the Ministry, I just hopped in to get some food for Fifi.” She said, holding up a sack of carrots. He knew from his time working with her that she had a Mist Hopper named Fifi.
“No worries, it was great to see you again Margie.” Galahad said with a fond smile. He’d never been interested in women but if he had been he definitely would’ve pursued her, she was a warm, caring person.
“Great to see you too,” she said, returning his smile before heading out into Diagon Alley.
The momentary distraction having passed, Galahad looked around the shop, the first things he saw were the spiders. Definitely not - he did not like spiders so the idea of having one for a pet was right out. He didn’t mind snakes or lizards but he did have a decided preference for warm blooded pets. Not owls. There were so many owls at Hogwarts it was ridiculous. He was convinced that if magic ever failed they could power the school with owl droppings. Rabbits were nice but a bit too cliche for a wizard. Nothing he could pull out of a hat.
That eliminated everything but a cat or one of those pygmy puffs, which he still considered himself a bit too manly for. The cat selection looked pretty good today. A Siamese, some tabbies, what he was pretty sure was an Egyptian Mau but he couldn’t pick one of those out of a line-up. Then he saw him. A jet black cat which he knew had to be a Bewitched Midnight Stalker. It wasn’t the black fur that caught his eye, it was the eyes. The cat’s eyes were the same shade of sapphire as Orion’s. It was meant to be, it just had to be. He walked over to the cage that the cat was in and the cat walked over immediately and meowed loudly. Galahad stuck a finger through and scratched behind the cat’s ear. The cat immediately laid down and started purring loudly. “I’ll take that as a yes,” Galahad said happily.
Five minutes later he was a few galleons poorer but happily carrying the cat, a bed, some cat food, and some litter. He set off into the mid afternoon sun whistling happily. What animal do you wish to purchase? Bewitched Midnight Stalker
