Alice is a girl of her word.

When she makes a promise, she keeps it to the best of her ability, no matter how inconvenient it may be. It's the first week of classes, and she has plenty of homework to attend to, but she also promised her father (her real one!) that she would write at least one letter per week. It's Friday night, and she knows she should be studying if she's going to maintain her expected high marks, but instead she's in the owlery with two letters in her hand.

One, addressed to Winston Briggs is meant for her father. It is a letter filled with reassurances that this is indeed the place that Alice wants to spend the next seven years, descriptions of some of the neat things she's seen in class, and a few paragraphs about some of the people she's met since arriving. (She doesn't write about the encounter with the plants in the greenhouse, or the discussion of werewolves. She doesn't want to scare her father.)

All in all, the letter ran through almost a foot of parchment. Alice neatly folds that letter and ties it up, handing it to one of the school owls along with a treat. She watches fondly as the owl flies off into the skies.

The other letter isn't quite like the one she wrote to her father. It's addressed to Mme Nadia de Villiers, her mother. This letter is far more formal in language and content than the one she wrote to her father, and it lacks a great many personal details. It doesn't mention the people Alice has met. It doesn't mention the impressions her instructors have left on her. It's a very factual piece of parchment with naught but her marks listed with a formal account of the spells she's learnt.

It's also only about two paragraphs long.

Her hands are shaking as she tries to fold it. Part of her doesn't want to waste the time. Would her mother really be concerned with her education? Alice thinks so, but even in the short amount of time she's lived with her father, she feels closer to him than she ever did with her mother. She loves her mother, but that love feels more like an obligation.

Her hands struggle to fold and tie the parchment for a moment longer before she sighs and tears the parchment in half, shoving the scraps into her robe's pockets.

"Oh well," she sighs, turning to leave the owlery. She glances around at some of the other students as she walks, wondering how they're faring in their own letter writing.

It was the first Friday of the new year, classes where over, and most would be winding down in the common rooms. But Quinn needed to send out an owl about her first week back. That was what her parents had made her promise to do, 'at least one owl a week'. So she did just that, write up a short-ish letter about how classes are going, what all had happened. And that Bear was doing quite fine back in a school environment. All she had left to do was send it out.

She climbed the stairs to the owlery, slightly out of breath when she got there. She looked on the walls on walls of owls, the smell was, well. so-so. It could defiantly be worse, but for a week in not bad at all. She looked over the school owls before she saw a gorgeous tawny owl, "Hello, would you mind taking this letter for me?" She got a coo in reply that she took as a yes.

Quinn held out her arm for the owl to climb onto, and tied her letter to his leg. That was when she heard a rip, she only spared a glance over, where she saw a girl stuff two half's of a letter in her pockets. 'must be a break up letter or something." She thought to herself, why else would someone rip a letter in two? But it was quite early in the year for dating, let alone break ups. It was not much for her to know anyways.

She turned to go and let the owl fly and deliver her letter, when she nearly ran into the girl that ripped up the letter. The owl that she had on her arm flew away in a start. Giving Quinn only but a small scratch. "Drat!" She cried, Thankfully the owl left the tower with the letter still on its leg. On his way to her parents home. She huffed before looking at the girl. "Oh! Oh my, I am so sorry! Are you ok?" She said seemingly remembering her manners. If Quinn was right, then the girl would already but upset from a breakup. And she did not need someone almost running into her.

Alice nearly stumbles into a pile of feathers and owl droppings as an older girl all but collides with her, but she manages to just barely regain her balance. The older girl offers an apology, but Alice hardly acknowledges it. Her attention is on the scratch on the older girl's arm.

"Oh, goodness! Am I okay? I should be asking you!" she says, walking over with quickened footsteps to the older girl and reaching out to try and take the girl's arm in her hands.

"What happened here? Did I do this to you?" she asks, concerned.

The scratch doesn't seem to be huge, but for someone who grew up in a pristine, safe environment, even the smallest of scratches stand out to Alice. It hurt enough that this girl reacted with a 'drat,' and, even if it didn't, there's always the chance of infection. Oh, if only she knew some sort of magic to disinfect it. Even her muggle father keeps all kinds of disinfectants in his house, so why is she so unprepared?

"There's a fountain over there. I don't know how much good it would do to try and clean it with that water, since the owls drink from it, but it might be worth a shot."

She pauses, realizing her blunder.

"Oh, right. I apologize," she says, composing herself. "My name is Alice."

At the girls shout, Quinn at first though that she would be mad at her. After all, an 'oh goodness' could be taken as A) a old lady almost falling, or B) A old lady being disgusted by who knows what. Sure both are old lady's, but that's just what comes to mind when she thinks of 'oh' and 'goodness' in a sentience together. After hearing the rest of what she said, asking if she was ok. She realized that she was wrong. She may have been just a bit scared.

"Im fine, don't worry. It's just a small scratch." She tried to let the girl know, as she seamed more worried about it then Quinn was. After all, she did find herself exploring quite a bit. And getting a few small scratches from those adventures. "It was just the owl, not you." She shook her head, they had sharp talons, and she let it rest on her bare arm.

She smiled softly at the suggestion of the fountain, "Thank you, but im sure its fine. I can go to the hospital wing soon." She then stopped smiling a bit. "Are you ok?" She turned her head to the side a bit. She never got a clear answer from Alice. As she introduced herself. "No need to apologize, My name is Quinn." She said shortly after Alice.

"Hello, Quinn," Alice says with a polite smile and a curtsy that comes out of habit from years of etiquette training as a little girl. She curses herself in her mind, knowing that she doesn't have to curtsy to the other students here.

She looks to the scratch on Quinn's hand skeptically, but she has no right to insist on its severity. Quinn is probably a fair bit tougher than Alice is, she thinks.

"I'm sorry if I've startled you," she says. "I tend to walk about quietly, so I probably roamed a bit too close behind you while you were writing your letter."

Alice quickly realizes that she avoided Quinn's question again. She doesn't mean to, but she's not all that accustomed to people showing concern in her direction, so she was more focused on Quinn's wellbeing and apologizing for disrupting it.

"I'm fine," she lies, but there's a slight hesitation in her voice. "I was... sending letters back home, and I hesitated to send one of them. I feel that it would only bring more ill than good."

Alice doesn't realize the implications that may, or may not, support Quinn's assumptions. In her mind, she's simply being vague. Polite, yet vague.

She turns to look out into the darkening sky, thinking idle thoughts of how far her letter to her father has made it by now. It's only been a few minutes, but just knowing the letter is on its way feels good. She can't see the owl anymore, so she likes to pretend he'll receive it quite soon.

"What about you?" she asks. "You seem to get on well with the owls. You must write loads of letters."

She looks more closely at Quinn, noticing the height difference between them. It isn't huge, but Quinn's definitely a fair bit older than her.

"Oh, you're an older student, right? A third year? Fourth?" she asks, quite intrigued that an upperclassman is spending time talking to her.

I noticed Quinn's birthday, and thought it makes sense that Alice would assume a higher year than second!

Elizabeth was walking up the stairs slowly, rereading her letter that she was about to send to her parents. She had seen Demetrios a few minutes earlier and they had hugged each other affectionately before hurrying off again.

As she tucked the letter back into its envelope, she opened the door and looked up to coax an owl to her. Just then, she saw one of her fellow Ravenclaw first-years who she only knew from the Sorting Ceremony, Alice was it? Well, she was standing with another girl, talking. Trying not to eavesdrop, she quickly hurried to the other end of the room.

"Come on, I have a letter that needs to be delivered. Please, can one of you do it?" She said, trying to coax an owl out. They just preened their feathers and ignored her. Sighing she sat down. "Well then! If you're going to be like that, fine. I'll just sit right here." And just like that, she sat, waiting for an owl to come down and take her letter to her parents.

Then, remembering where she had met Demetrios, she reopened her letter and contemplated removing the "Demetrios...are fine..." part but then decided that she would have to redo the entire letter if she did so. So she just put the letter back into its envelope.
