4 Days before the Summer Holidays
It was raining outside, Delilah could see it out of the large window behind the Professors table, the sound was quite soothing, echoing throughout the large Hall that Delilah had been in every day for 10 months, except for Christmas of course, she went home then. Delilah was stood at the entrance of the Great hall, a red flannel shirt on with a black skirt and purple converses, a denim jacket wrapped around her waist.

Classes had ended the week before, it was around 8 am on a Tuesday, and they went home that weekend, or at least if Delilah wasn't going to the Summer Camp then she would have been going home that weekend. She missed her Granny, she really did, but she wanted to make the most of her time at Hogwarts, it wasn't every day that you go to a magic school that you didn't know existed.

For some reason she was nervous, she had planned to meet up with Reid, it wasn't like they hadn't spoken before. Delilah thought of Reid as a close friend, but that was probably just her misreading her own feelings, she cared for the Hufflepuff more than anybody, except her Granny of course. The Ravenclaw might be book smart, but as soon as it comes to understanding her feelings, she was in the dark. She couldn't help but think that he wasn't coming, even though he said he would.

She didn't know if Reid was going to the Summer Camp or not, but if he wasn't then this would be her last chance to talk to him for 2 months, except owls but she didn't know where he lived so how would that work? She paced backwards and forwards a bit, he was probably still asleep, it was about 5 minutes after their meeting time and that was enough to make Delilah believe he wasn't coming. “Maybe this was a bad idea.” She said, to nobody in particular as she continued to pace across the entrance of the Great Hall.

THE letter was a bit of a surprise for him, he didn’t expect to get from anyone within the castle’s walls. It had come from Delilah, which made his suspicion grow as to why she would perhaps want to meet him at the Great Hall. Reid had struggled the days before to pack his things and not forget anything at the school. It was camp but still. He had been talking with some of the other boys in the dorms, chattering about their summer plans. It became clear to him that he didn’t have much planned, except to meet Dymphna sometime in the second month of summer.

THAT alone was excited itself. But today not much came from the boy, he was undeniably tired and ready to crawl back into those heavenly warm sheets. The ‘pitter-patter’ of the rain against the foggy pane of his window didn’t make the young boy want to frolic through the halls with his scarf to the wind. But he still cared about seeing Delilah and didn’t want to do any ill harm to her feelings. Each step felt heavy for the boy, wearing jeans, a shirt, and his converse down the halls. He carried his signature gray Derby FC hoodie that he began pulling onto himself as he entered the Great Hall. By now, his mind was less lucid and actually ready to process some information.

THE messy brown head of hair popped up from the clothing, disoriented slightly as he almost bumped into another second year. The Hufflepuff mumbled a sorry under his breath rather carelessly, meandering to find Delilah sitting at one of the tables. A Ravenclaw had gotten up, Reid moved aside and paused to let them through. “I don’t understand how anyone can be awake this early.” he croaked with a hint of amusement.

THE boy carefully lowered himself into the seat beside Delilah with a little less than half a forearm’s length of space between them. He leaned forward on his elbows to look at her rather curiously. “Did you eat breakfast already?” Reid’s half-lidded stare drifted to the nearest window pane and he cracked a gentle smile. “Well, I can’t really tell if it’s breakfast to be honest.” From appearance alone, it seemed that he just rolled out of bed and hadn't even thought about how he looked. A hint of discoloration set themselves underneath his eyes, an indicator that he hasn't slept.

IT was the truth, Reid didn't pick up all too well on his subjects and so he spent countless hours going over it. The result was decent grades, but at the expense of his sleep. It was not until recently that he's just catching up on it. Though this didn't bother him, he liked seeing his friends rather than a thick book. Delilah was a nice break from the mundane.

Upon hearing a familiar voice complain about the time, her lips stretched into a grin, her worries disappearing as she looked up at him, "Sorry, it is a wee bit early isn't it?" She felt that strangely familiar fuzzy feeling in her stomach as she watched him sit down beside her. When Delilah heard him ask if she had eaten yet, she quickly replied, "Actually no, I was kind of just waiting for you." She let out a small awkward laugh.

Down the centre of the house tables there were various breakfast foods. There were actually quite a lot since most students would have still been sleeping because they didn't have class today. The Ravenclaw leaned forward over the table, grabbing a measly slice of toast from a strangely piled plate of it. She often didn't eat a lot, especially for breakfast, she tended to attempt to make up for it at afternoon dinner but that could have been a cause for her very small stature.

Delilah took a small bite out of her toast, feeling a bit awkward to be eating when Reid wasn't. Once she had finished eating her slice, she spoke again, "Do you want some?" She asked, pointing to her toast with her free hand. Once what she had said actually registered in her brain, she had a bit of a panic in her head as her face went pink, "I mean...not of this slice, a different one...obviously....this one is mine." Immediately she mentally and physically facepalmed. "What I was trying to ask was, do you want food?" If anything her ramble made it more awkward than her original statement.

She looked down at her toast, taking another bite as she tried very badly to cover over her nervous rambling. She looked back up at him and noticed bags under his eyes, "Did you sleep well?" Reid looked tired, she couldn't help but feel like she wanted to know why. Delilah wasn't usually the nosy type, but there was something about Reid that made her want to make sure he was keeping himself healthy.

IN all the awkwardness that Reid typically encountered, Delilah always seemed to have her own 'flow' or 'quirk' to it. But it never made him uncomfortable in that sense, he was still fond of his friend and preferred to be the counterweight to her atmosphere. Making it more awkward was probably torture for her. They had the food and the noise of the other houses at least, that was enough for him to not fall into a state of silence. He found little gravity to the situation, only curious as to why she called him out on this particular day.

REID'S hand smoothed over the side of his face, looking purely amused that she probably noticed his haphazard appearance. "Well, I could have slept better. But I think I'm just so eager for summer than I can't help but not sleep." He brushed his hair back with the same hand, leaning his arm against the table as he held his forehead. But he did reach over and grab some food, looking up to glance around them. "I hope your housemates don't mind me sitting here." he whistled. He would move if he needed to anyway.

REID took a few bites of the jammed muffin and placed it back on his plate. There were a lot of things he wanted to ask, one of which was what the letter had been for. He could have cut straight to the chase, but that felt rude to him and thus he preferred if she just did it when it was most comfortable. For now, he entertained himself with small talk with whatever honestly came to mind. "Do you think you did well in your final examinations?" he asked, taking a bite out of his sweet apple.

SHE was a Ravenclaw, of course she did. But he didn't want to assume too hard, he struggled a little himself. Though he had help, thanks to Dymphna. It seemed the Ravenclaws were always having to carry him through academically, he truly owed the house a great debt at times.

Delilah quickly finished off her slice of toast as she listened, with the back of her hand she rubbed her mouth, rubbing away any potential crumbs before rubbing her hands together, knocking all the extra toast onto the ground. "You better get good sleep over the holidays, you hear me? I'm not having you get ill because you aren't sleeping." She tilted her head slightly, smiling up at him.

"I doubt they mind, people switch tables to sit with their friends all the time, it would be cool if there was just like a neutral house table or something though. If you want to move to a different table then we can move over there if you are uncomfortable? I'm fine with sitting wherever." It still absolutely boggled her mind how two minutes ago she was panicking that he wasn't going to show up, but now all she felt was happiness as if her worries literally melted away. She didn't even really have a good reason to meet him, she just wanted to and didn't have a better excuse than that.

Oh, the exams, "Yeah they went well, I didn't have too much trouble really, how about you? I hope you did well." Delilah leaned her elbow on the table, her head resting in the palm of her hand. "You see...." She started, before realising she didn't really know what she was saying, "I'm happy you're my friend." She said with a grin, a small laugh coming from the young girl.

"I'm sorry, I don't really know where that came from, I'm a bit tired too." She laughed again, looking briefly down the table towards the door as a few more people filed in, before returning her gaze to her company.

IT was a nice gesture, a nice thing to say to him. It made him feel warm, welcomed that someone said that. It was the first time he's heard it in a long time and perhaps that was what hit him the most. There was no coat to it, simple and true words that would make any kid pretty happy. It certainly made the young boy happy and brought a life to his tired expression.

"THAT'S ... that's really nice of you to say." he let out a small laugh, looking down at the ground for a moment. Reid pursed his lips, a suppressed smile as he nodded, rather embarrassed. "I'm glad you're my friend too, Del." He fell into silence, unsure of what to say as she caught him off guard with the statement. It was sweet and perhaps the fact that it came from a girl was quite flattering. Boys were idiots, right?

THAT seemed to be the general consensus that he heard from girls, so to get a compliment was rare to him. He tore a piece of bread in half, leaning his elbow on the table as he carried on. "Are you heading home for the summer? Back to your place?" Reid bit into the piece, ripping it in the process. He didn't want to go home yet, he liked Hogwarts, he liked his house, and he liked his friends too much to leave outright.

BUT he knew he had to leave anyway at the end of the first month of summer, he liked his family and he liked Derby, but it was too 'quiet'.

As he repeated what she had said, a gin crept onto her face again, it felt really nice to know that he actually enjoyed her company. Since she had met him she had thought of him as one of her closest friends, but more recently as she had made more friends, her feelings for the hufflepuff had gotten more confusing to her, she didn't feel as close to any of her friends, yeah she was really close with Dymph, confiding in her a few times, but it didn't feel the same.

She just watched him for a moment, before realising she looked strange and looked down at her now empty plate, just a few crumbs littered on it due to the toast she had held above it previously. When he spoke again a few seconds later she turned her head to look at him again, “Uhh, yeah, after the summer camp I'm heading back up north.” Delilah laughed, letting her voice become more relaxed towards the end of the sentence, more of her Scottish heritage coming out. She always sounded thickly Scottish but she tried to cover it up somewhat when she was talking to most people at hogwarts instead of letting herself sound normal.

“You should visit sometime, maybe at Christmas or next summer or something, the village is pretty small but it's really nice. A very tight-knit kind of community, besides, I think my granny would like you, I've never had any friends over before. She would be happy to see I made at least one here.” Her granny had been worrying that Delilah would be alone in hogwarts, the same as when she was in primary school. She never cared for people until she met Reid and Dymph and all of her lovely other friends, it would definitely cheer up her granny, for a moment Delilah wondered if her granny got lonely without her and the smile that had been almost completely unwavering until then fell for a few seconds.

“How about you? Got any plans for the holidays?” She smiled again as she looked around the great hall, it had only been a few minutes but people were beginning to fill it, the students ready to eat before packing away or saying goodbyes to their friends for the couple months that they were going to be apart.

HIS chewing slowed, his brows arching at the sound of going north. North in Scotland? Or as in north of Scotland? What came after Scotland? He figured something very cold, but he never paid enough attention in geography class. Reid found it charming that she invited him, it was the last thing he'd ever think of anyone offering. Were Scottish people always so inviting? Perhaps he'd get another invitation next year to visit someone as well.

REID brushed the crumbs off the edge of his lip and swallowed his food. "I'd love to visit, I'd just have to tell my mum and dad. But they're usually okay with this stuff, it's nice of you to offer though." He picked up an apple and bit into it as he sniffed, trying to recall what he had planned for this coming summer. "This coming month, there's a camp, did you hear about it? I thought you were going to attend this year, would have been great to have everyone I knew in a cabin." he beamed.

REID didn't know much about the activities from camp, he just hoped it would be actual camp things. But he liked the twist that magic usually had for the most mundane of muggle things. Hopefully, he still remembered how to set up a tent and even just start the smallest of fires. "I'm still getting ready for it though." He scratched his arm and bit into the apple afterwards.

"I figured I should start early, so after this, I'm going to go back and finish up." he smiled. Reid set his food down to stop and actually not keep distracting himself from eating. "I hope you enjoy your holidays though, that's really nice to be able to go home. My mum and dad were asking if I wanted to go home, but I just started to really like Hogwarts. So, I reckon I would stay for the summer for a month at least." He truly began to like Hogwarts, the feeling of homesickness was fading a little and he was looking forward for the summer to pass.

She tried not to smile for a moment, trying to force her face into a more natural position because she was beginning to get cramps in her cheeks. It failed, she just looked silly wiggling her face muscles about like a newborn baby unable to control their own body before a smile returned. She rubbed her face for a couple seconds as Reid spoke again, her hands fell to her lap and she opened her eyes to speak.

"Yeah, the camp. I am going to that actually, it would be cool if we were in the same cabin huh?" Maybe she would be able to see him again in the summer, but she's glad she met up with him today jut in case. "I've already got everything packed and sorted, I guess I just had some extra time now that exams are over and I don't have to study or anything." To be fair she was studying even way before exams were even mentioned, but now she had nothing to do until she started the next year's work after the holidays.

"My Granny offered too, and I miss her but I feel like I should stay for as long as I can, I mean how amazing is this? This time last year I was just....normal? I guess? Its so crazy to think. It feels like a dream that one day I'm just going to wake up in my room back home and I'll have never met you and all the other amazing people I've met in the past year."

Delilah couldn't help but think about all the people she had met, Reid, Dymphna, Serena, everybody else too. Suddenly a thought come to her head and she burst out laughing. "I just remembered how we met. I pretty much screamed in your face and then we both fell down the stairs." She could barely breathe at this point. Why was she suddenly reminiscing all of this? She didn't know but she was and she wasn't complaining. "My back hurt for so long after that."

The Hufflepuff's fingers gently drummed the surface of the table, his gaze shifting from her to anyone that may have passed by. But it always came back to her, he was becoming a better listener. There were moments where she lost him and it showed in his eyes, though she might not have picked it up. He tentatively ran his finger along the grooves of the wooden table as she reminisced, looking up at her with the very brief moment.

"I was a Prefect back then I think or Head Boy? I don't really remember." he answered. Reid sort of missed those days, he was just a first year after all. It was hard telling others what to do when they were much bigger than you. But what he missed was actually having the responsibility, it kept him in line and kept him in check. Nowadays, he lived for a little mischief and a little danger to pepper alongside his day.

Though part of him felt better, he learned from his failure as a Head Boy and maybe one day he could take on the role of Prefect. "Are you thinking of becoming Prefect one day Del?" He could see her as being a pretty likable prefect, she had a nice disposition, a curious mind, and certainly someone people could approach easy. He wasn't sure how he seemed beyond his own personal perception, but he didn't like to rely on his opinions too much.

But he could see his friend doing Ravenclaw some justice and some good under the house of blue. "If you aren't, I think you'd make a pretty good one. Jus' saying. Plus you keep up with your grades, yeah? That's pretty important." He liked supporting his friends or even suggesting them things, what good friend wouldn't? Sure, he wouldn't support some of the crazy ideas, but this was one of those things he hoped she'd maybe one day really enjoy. Reid lived vicariously through them anyway, part of him felt envy, and another part felt joy.
