Another day, another cello practice, every day at 4 pm.
It was the most consistent thing going on in EmmaLee's life right now and consistency was needed right now with her nerves about to snap like cello strings strung too tight. The next dueling stage was in just a couple of days and EmmaLee couldn't help but be on her toes again. The match-ups had shifted a bit this time and she was placed with a new team. A higher tier team.
Why her? She had only survived the last round for more than six seconds because Alyssea had had the thought to heal her after she got hit by Estelle's knockback jinx and then her own shoddy spell work backfired on her. Sure, she'd done some resilience practice with Raizel after the match, but she still felt shaky about her ability to handle a hit. As far as she was concerned, Alyssea and Axyen were just far better duelists than she was. They had also made a really good team, working almost as if they could read each other's minds about what move to make next.
EmmaLee hated change. She hated having to make friends and then leave and make friends again and then leave and make friends all over again. Why couldn't she just stay on a team where she fit? Or in a school where she fit? or in a country where she fit? Why did everything in her life have to change so much when it was comfortable the way it was?
The pale girl shook her head as she pushed open the door to the rehearsal room and entered with her midnight blue cello case. The blue morpho butterflies fluttered around frantically across the case, as if sensing her anxiety and the portraits around the room shot out and happy chorus of welcomes as the door closed. She actually enjoyed the company of the music lovers as they were always polite, encouraging, and helpful if she was stuck on a piece. Especially they dark lady in the portrait directly across from the door, whom she learned was a very accomplished and famous witch cellist in her own right. EmmaLee had had quite a few conversations with the portrait about technique and theory that had made her playing infinitely better. It was like talking to Tante Alura again. She even looked a little like Tante.
Anyway, it was no use letting her thoughts spiral about how frustrating this whole thing was. She would click with this team or she wouldn't, she would do well against better duelists or she wouldn't. Right now she needed to focus on her other craft and with that, she pulled a chair to the middle of the room, set up her ocean blue cello and began to play, starting with her finger exercises and scales and then moving on to her favorite song list.
