Juliet in the Sun
There was nothing more exciting for Juliet than to play in the sun. The weather had been cold but sunny enough the prior that patches of grass were showing in the snow and the walk ways were clear and dry. The main cobbled courtyard, then, was clear of snow and begging for a certain cat to trot and frolic. Dennis wasn’t sure if he should let Juliet outside though. Bengals easily got sick in colder weather but an unexercised Bengal was a menace to the dorms. Deciding to risk the cold in favor of not having classmates and roommates yell at him because Juliet was going crazy again, he took his feline friend out to the courtyard for some fun.
He grabbed some of the balls and small stuffed animals that Juliet loved to fetch. Once outside the sun was bright overhead, it was almost lunch time by the time he finally got everything ready and headed out. He set Juliet on the cobbles and she sprinted off like a race horse. Darting this way and that and coming to rest sitting on the wall of the fountain, looking at Dennis expectantly. The boy sighed and produced one of the small balls from his pocket. She came sprinting back to him, climbed up his pant leg and rested on his shoulders. He wasn’t sure if his Bengal, the species best known for their love of climbing, was actually part squirrel. He looked over and it appeared like Dennis didn’t even exist, he was just a tree that Juliet was using, so focused was she.
Dennis threw the ball to the opposite side of the courtyard, or at least he tried. His noodle arms got it as far as the fountain. With powerful hind legs, Juliet sprung into action. In leaps and bounds, skipping cobbles, Juliet raced with laser precision to the ball. She over shot it, as was her habit, and jumped on the side of the fountain’s retaining wall and jumped off it, performing a half corkscrew to land on her feet and onto the ball that she had previously missed. Dennis swore she just wanted to show off but also knew Bengals were incredibly athletic and often did things just to challenge themselves.
She picked up the ball after scurrying around with it, pouncing on it, and failing to bunny kick it, on account of how small the ball was, only to fling it in another random direction. She finally got it in her mouth and trotted over to Dennis full of pride. She dropped it at his feet and rubbed against his leg. “Good girl,” Dennis cooed as he scratched her head. She gave him a look as if to ask where her treats were. He gave her a sympathetic look and then, to distract her, threw the ball again.
