2023/24, Stage 2 Slytherin vs Hufflepuff: Match 4

Hufflepuff had started strong this year with Lea's previous duel being no exception. The odds had been in their favor, though, with the Gryffindors a mix of years that ranged both older and younger than Lea- now she was looking at the entire Slytherin team being a year or two older than herself. It was a good thing then that her teammates were fifth years, paired once more with Lucia as Jake switched for Hades. It was comforting having a more familiar team even as she was curious to see how Hades would fare- it seemed like it would be a challenging match but the girl had confidence in her team and a bit of pride with being the youngest in the lineup. Surely she must have been doing something right then, never mind her knowing it was more about the years and duellists on the team.

Galton's loud voice would break her thoughts, glancing up with a small smile at the show before she entered the piste and found her spot. She would offer a small bow of her head to the Slytherin team before waiting for that final moment until she could spur into action.

After the disaster that had been their last duel, Ruby was not pleased. Given that it had been several months now, she had worked through the worst of her anger regarding the loss, but she still regarded her teammates with disdain. For once, she didn’t speak a word as she got into position, ignoring the other Slytherins in favor of sizing up their opponents, cold blue eyes fixed on the Hufflepuffs. She raised her wand as Galton gave them permission to begin. Let this time be different.

Miss Fox there was looking so good he almost forgot how awful it felt to be on his team. He didnt need to look at their faces to know just how supportive and encouraging they will be. Not that he needed their cheer and entusiam. He’ll be lucky enough if by the end of the duel neither of them accidentally hit one another with a spell. Out of spite or just general bad luck. But he was his own cheerleader. He could hype himself up despite his string of losses.

And he could enjoy the view while he was at it.

Yellow certainly was his favourite colour for sure. So many eye candies on the opposing team today that he barely could hold back an impish grin. One particular stood out from the rest. So much so that he barely could hide the fact that he was checking her out for a short minute. If she (@Lucia Fox) glanced at him, there was a high chance she’d get a flirty wink from the boy.

It felt good to return to the duelling stage after a win last October. Lucia idly twirled her wand around in her fingers as she waited for the game to begin, and somehow managed to almost drop the thing right as the referee, a loud older boy, pointed dramatically at her and her team. Hoping nobody had noticed, she attempted to smile at their opponents, but was met by a wink from the boy - Hanako. Was he flirting, or teasing her about her fumble? The cheeky grin on his face lead Lucia to believe it was the latter, and she cursed under her breath. She couldn't go making a fool of herself, especially not in front of the other duellists, almost all of which she was familar with. Apart from her teammates, Lucia had seen Ruby around in the Headliner office once or twice, and Opeila would have been known to her as a prefect even if she hadn't once collapsed into Lucia's arms in the middle of the corridors. Lucia doubted that whatever had ailed her back then would put the Slytherin off her game today, though. It was going to be a tough match.

The moderator seemed to enjoy interacting with the crowd, allowing them time to cheer in favour of their preferred team. Lucia wondered if any of her friends were in the audience, but doubted it. None of them had told her that they'd be there, and while her sister Briar was liable to turn up anywhere with no warning, the Ravenclaw rarely came to watch Lucia duel. Perhaps, Lucia mused, she should make a point of inviting Briar to her next match? Although then again, it would be embarrasing if she lost, or if Briar didn't want to come. Lucia couldn't think about that now, though - she had a duel to win! Or at least, a duel to do her best in. In the few moments between the crowd dying down and the moderator speaking up again, Lucia turned to Lea and Hades, offering them both a quiet, "Good luck." Then she gripped her wand tightly and readied herself to begin.

Hades had a duel to attend to, and had to face Slytherin again. As soon as he arrived in the area, Hades walked gently, his cloak gently rubbing against the ground as he watched his teammates. Hades had never interacted with them, but he hoped theycould form a solid team to lead to victory. Last time, if Hades remembered correctly, he had won the duel even though he was out of action. His mind was a little distracted, but as soon as Galton made the introductions, he rolled his eyes at Slytherin’s team.

He pursed his lips, keeping silent. Once the group finished cheering and applauding, he was able to get into position and place himself in the assigned area. He performed the required formalities, his hair changing color slightly as his mood changed. Lately it had become more suspectable to the changes of his ability, since the summer. Something caught his attention, seeming to be a noise and he looked at his teammates, nodding his head to cheer them up. You could say Hades wasn’t talkative today.

Opeila was not quite over the chaos of her last duel yet when she entered the stage again. Sure as hell not over it enough to look at Hanako, who she had been paired with again. After he hit her with his spell and she kicked him in retaliation, she would have thought that they would be kept apart in this duel but it seemed she was sorely mistaken.

Opeila would not even grant the boy a single look, only nod in Ruby's direction before turning to her opponents. She was ready.

No time was wasted once the go-ahead was given. Magical music in the form of incantations would erupt from the piste as our seasoned duelists began their deadly dance. It was possibly one of the greatest moments of any duel. The crowd went silent, their hearts skipping a beat or two as they all anxiously waited to see how things played out.

The Vipers would waste no time coiling - the fangs were out and aimed right for the Badgers. Ruby led the pack with a double dose Flipendo; ever the classic no matter the age-group. Opelia and Hanako would opt for spells that offered a little more than just raw damage - Ventus and a Cracker Jinx. The Badgers would not stand idly by though, they would justify their "Blazing" descriptor. Lea cooked up a searing Incendio Duo while Lucia chose a Glacius to complement. How could you go wrong with fire and ice? And as if they had chosen a themed set of moves, Hades would work on covering the Vipers in a fog - a sure byproduct if the fire and ice were to meet.

Spells flew so quickly it would be hard for one to see all of what happen, even more so with Hades' thickening fog. These duelists were well practiced, almost all of their magic would find it's mark. Lea would take the brunt of Slytherin's fury. Both Hanako and Opelia's magic would catch her, sending her head spinning within a vortex. The radial crackers from Hanako would be easily dodged by the other two Badgers. Ruby would have no success hitting Lea (though it was a close call), Lucia would be caught with a resounding thud. Lea and Lucia would not be without their revenge. Lea's Incedio duo would narrowly wiz by Ruby, but easily found Opelia. As the seer was set alight, Hanako would be flash frozen. Somehow in the boys infatuation with the Badger he had failed to see the spell she aimed strait at him.

As the fog thickened to it's final, milky state the crowd would finally begin to react. It had been an explosive first round, setting a fast pace for the duel. Cheers and curses alike washed though the audience. The Badgers seemed to have taken more damage, but they'd also positioned the Vipers to their advantage. Merlin knew what these duelists had planned!

Well this was new. He could at least be rest assured his teammates wouldn’t throw a snark, glare or eye roll in his direction when he managed to hit one of the hufflepuffs. But victory was too far to celebrate early. But regardless, he was someone who makes it easy for things to get to his head. So mini celebration it is. Alas, that wasn’t the best decision, and he was hit with a spell (when is he not hit by a spell rip). He let out a chilling shiver, almost dropping his wand in the process. His limbs felt numb and he felt the air around him drop in temperature. For a split second he almost wished the hufflepuffs would grant him a fire spell. Almost. He rubbed his sleeves as a weak attempt to warm him up. To make matters worse, their side was now under nebulous. His favourite spell, usually. His teammates inability to move in the darkness however, was a consistent annoyance. He barely could let out a groan from the cold. He’ll just have to focus on himself for now.

Lucia started off with a spell that had only recently been made legal in duelling: glacius, aimed at the boy who'd been smirking at her earlier. In fact, seeing Hanako standing there was reminding Lucia of the other time she'd faced him in a duel, when he'd spent half the match flirting with her partner and the rest of it calling her 'Squidward'. (Lucia still didn't know who or what that was, but assumed it was some kind of squid.) At least he didn't seem to remember that interaction, and wasn't even talking - unusual for him, Lucia figured. Unfortunately, his teammates were. Incantations from both Slytherin girls resulted in one spell that hit Lucia, and one that hit Lea. Lucia looked over at the younger girl and winced. Only one round in, and poor Lea already didn't look good. Still, Hades hadn't been hit by anything yet, which was something.
