The snow had stopped falling. For a little while, at least. The lake was covered in a sheet of ice, and it still looked as beautiful as ever.
Genevieve looked out the window, sighing at the sight of the winter landscape. I should really get outside. Even though it's cold, I haven't been down to the lake in ages! Her decision made, she grabbed a warm coat and pulled on her winter boots, then grabbed a notebook and a quill. She was going to write a letter to her mother while she was down there.
Walking down to the lake, she shivered in the frosty air. Brr. Her cheeks and nose were already turning pink from the cold. Genevieve found a nice looking bench, then cleared the snow off of one side of it and sat down, pulling out her notebook. She sighed, trying to think of what she wanted to say.
"Dear Mum, she said out loud as she began writing down her thoughts on a clean piece of notebook paper. "I miss you. I'm so sorry I haven't written yet, I have been so busy with everything. How is everyone? How is little Amelie doing, the last sister left at home? I'm alright. Hufflepuff is wonderful! All the people are so kind. Isn't it funny that so far each of us sisters has gotten sorted into a different house? Dad was a Gryffindor, wasn't he? Now we have all four houses in the family! I wonder what house you would have been in... Do you ever wish you were a witch and not a muggle? I'm sorry if that sounded mean. Hmm... I think you would have been in Hufflepuff, just like me! We are so similar, after all. I love you sooo much. I will send more letters, I promise! Sorry this one's so short. Lots of hugs, Nevi."
Genevieve smiled as she finished her signature with a flourish. She leaned down and began to draw a surprisingly realistic little badger on the bottom half of the paper.
It was a picturesque scene, the snow falling down, the small girl, sitting by the frozen lake. It was peaceful and happy, at least for a moment.

The Badger and the Snake
Stressed by the day's events, Mae sought quiet in the frozen stillness of the lake. Peering outside through a foggy window, she saw the lake frozen in a deep slumber, with a thin layer of ice covering it. Mae grabbed her midnight black coat from her closet and slipped out of the Slytherin common room. She noticed kids huddled up in groups across the snow-dusted grounds.
Many kids were throwing snowballs at each other while others were making snow angles. Mae ignored them however, drawn only to the solitude the lake promised. She slowly walked towards the lake in an attempt not to slip as her feet crunched against the snow. Once she approached the lake, she stopped in her tracks when she noticed a girl, rather short for her age with long, brown hair. The girl was sitting on a bench, partly cleaned, and seemed to be writing. The girl spoke loudly enough for Mae to hear the letter she was writing. While the girl continued to speak, Mae muttered under her breath, "So trusting and so blind. No wonder she comes from a line of Mudbloods". Mae was already stressed enough due to her parents being upset at how little she's accomplished so far and didn't have time for others to take up her space. Instead of leaving, Mae proceeded to approach the girl. As she acknowledged the girl's Hufflepuff robes beneath her coat, a sly smile appeared on Mae's lips. "Well, well, if it isn't the hardworking badger, miles from her cozy burrow. Didn't think your kind cared for open skies this much." Mae said with a bit of mockery in her tone. Mae then noticed the drawing the girl was working on. "Your skills are like a troll's, what even is that? An ogre?" said Mae scoffing.

"Well, well, if it isn't the hardworking badger, miles from her cozy burrow. Didn't think your kind cared for open skies this much." The voice startled Genevieve so much she jumped, dropping her quill in the snow beside the bench.
She looked up in surprise. Standing beside the bench was a beautiful girl with platinum blonde hair and shimmering blue eyes. She was wearing a dark coat and a silver bracelet. She looked like the kind of girl you wouldn't want to mess with.
"Wh-what do you mean?" Genevieve asked, slightly nervous. "I love being outside." She gestured to the lake. "It's so beautiful today."
The girl glanced at Genevieve's letter, before she could put it away. "Your skills are like a troll's, what even is that? An ogre?" The girl said scornfully.
Genevieve looked at her in shock. Why was this girl being so rude to her? She didn't even know who this intruder was. "I-I'm not quite finished yet, and it's a badger." she said quickly, trying to defend herself. "Don't touch my letter. It's private, and you had no business looking at it," Genevieve had a sudden surge of bravado. How dare this girl try to bully her!She reached down to try and pick up her quill.
