Fang Hui-Ming could admit to himself that he had been much too absorbed with his own self. Frustrations at himself, at those around him, at the world at large; to the point where he had started losing light of what was really, truly important.

Sure, the Hogwarts population brought him to tears with their more-bravado-than-sense more often than not, but that did not mean that it fell too him to correct all the wrongs of the school. He had been so obsessed with his own self that he had not even noticed when his little sister had gone and established herself as a broom racing captain, and a right and formidable force in her own right. And for all his excuses: his alleged responsibilities, his O’Level examinations come June; his own exasperation at people in general; they were just that: excuses.

And that, simply, would not do.

So he had taken a reprieve from his self-established exile of study marathon to give his little sister just a little bit of time. He would never see himself in much of the chaos that his beloved sister was wont to get into; but here, in these circumstances, perhaps it wouldn’t be too bad to let loose. Just a tiny little bit.

Or at least, that had been what he was thinking until he was taking his place on the piste and found himself face-to-face with his best friend and arguably the most chaotic third year in the form of broom racing captain Vale Ashwood.

Ashwood was the kind of person who could turn something as humble as a book reading into unexpected fireworks – a talent for a sharp tongue and an unorthodox bearing that had left Hui-Ming unbalanced more often than not.

Even as Avery – Leveret, not his Avery, and wouldn’t that get confusing in his head – introduced the duel, the bespectacled Slytherin’s eyes darted around over his opponents; before settling on his beloved little sister.

“Hey,” he said softly to her, even as he nodded in acknowledgement of Avery and Ashwood. Ashwood had just as the latter said some words that sounded…. Uncharacteristically grounded and normal for a student, how unusual for her. But most of his attention was on his little sister.

“Come on. It’s just be like a snowball fight, but with spells.” he said gently to his little sister, in a voice far more tender than he would use for anyone else. He could confess, in the back of his mind, that other than merely fun, he had had ulterior motives to drag his sister into the dueling piste. Yes, a part of him had wanted to show off for his little sister; but perhaps another, bigger, part just wanted to see her in action up close – to make up, in his own mind, for the missed Broom Races and lack of time he had given her. “We’re just here to have some fun together.”

A blink, as he remembered that they were still in public. A moment’s hesitation, but then he raised his voice and continued. “… Well, that and vex both Averys with some obscure spells.”

And with that, Fang Hui-Ming tossed the wand in the air, caught it with his right hand – his weaker hand for casting – and took a dueling stance.

Whatever happened, today would definitely be...different

Another day, another challenge to overcome, and this time it came with a different and sweeter taste to the young Gryffindor. She learned to find her place among the daring and dangerous wizarding sports, nothing gave her more joy than doing her best to prove to herself that she was capable of achieving her goals. That's why, when Ming asked her to join him, she didn't hesitate in the slightest to accept. Well... that was one of the reasons! The fact is, that she missed her dearest brother and spending time with him. Sometimes it felt like they didn't even go to the same school for the little time they were able to share. They were different in many ways, but they were both extremely focused on their family's expectations of them, spending a lot of time dedicated to their studies and duties leaving relationships behind...what not always felt like the right thing to do. So Ying was feeling genuinely happy to be able to be there with her brother, having a moment of fun.

Anyone looking at her would see a calm and collected person, walking towards the dwelling piste as if walking to pick up a harmless book from a shelf, but the reality was that the adrenaline of the upcoming match was starting to make her anxiety get the better of her. She was thrilled with the feeling that this would be a good competition, she couldn't wait to finally start and hopefully, to make her brother feel proud of her. She lived for this moments, even if there's one thing she had yet to learn...to be a less bitter loser...If only she could change that tiny little "thing" about her, all of this would always be much more pleasant. Especially when she craved her brother's approval, it was more important to her than she wanted to admit.

She nodded back to Leveret as a greeting gesture her eyes changing quickly from him to Vale. The last time they faced each other, Gryffindor came out victorious, and Ashwood had managed to stay on top of her broom with the help of several doses of healing potion. Fortunately, during duels that wouldn't happen, Ying gave her a smile that was intended to be polite but turned more into a sneer than an innocent "Nice to see you here".

Her attention turned again, this time to the boy next to the Slytherin captain. Avery Chen was her's and her brother's other opponent during that match. The words: "to save yourself an ass-whooping from your brother?" were still very fresh in her memory since she hadn't been able to properly reply to them, "We will see who's going to have an ass-whooping today!" She thought sending him a sassy look.

Ming's voice sounded close to her and it was as if he had called her to the reality of the moment, keeping her focused in his caring tone of voice. Ying looked at her brother paying him her full attention, "A snowball fight?" She asked amused in a mutter, "I hope to hit them harder than that!" She continued in a low voice, intended only for him to hear. "Alright, alright! Just for fun, got it!" She assured him, "I have mostly fun when I win though..." She told him in a whisper, moving briefly closer to his ear and straightening up immediately with a mischievous smile spread shamelessly across her ivory face, then in elegant steps she headed for her rightful position on the piste.

At her brother's final worlds she couldn't stop the small laugh that escaped from her, "That's better, you got me worried for a second!" She told him with a wink. However, looking back at the opposite side of the piste, the amusement changed for a more serious expression, no way she would fail to get her focus where it should and was demanded to be.

	----- They were in for a zipper of a game, Avery could tell. There was something else on the line in this duel, something palpable in the air; like a sticky musk that refused to budge as either side traded glances. Chen tried humour, drawing a small curled smirk from Avery's own lips; he rather enjoyed this position at the second as the room settled, waiting for his signal. His hand fell and they were off. In an instant, wands were trained on their foes and spells were whipcracking around the room. The sibling duo had snapped their arms towards Vale in unison, an unconscious decision fuelled by her threatening candour Avery thought. He'd never seen Ming, afraid; more the kind to be brave and face his troubles head on, he wagered. Ying aimed a knockback jinx that zipped across the piste and it simply missed; perhaps too quick on the draw; too rushed to ensure it landed on her mark as it crashed into the walls beyond. Ming too had aimed for Vale, in an attempt to bring her down a peg or two; as Avery had thought he loved to do with his strange muggle-born hubris. A wind-sheer spewed from his wand tip and it was immediately made clear that Ming was spreading the spell to both of their foes in an attempt to catch Avery Chen, off guard. The allure of besting a friend was certainly attractive, it sets the pecking order so to speak. Perhaps the allure was so strong it threw Ming off as the initial wind gust missed Vale without her needing to do much dodging. The swirling, forceful blast sent towards the other Avery was closer to its mark, and the lad had to duck and weave to avoid being taken off his feet. The other end of the piste blazed with confidence, and fired back. Avery had summoned a blindfold in an attempt to handicap Ming. If it wasn't for him having to dodge Ming's wind, it may well have hit, but as it was; it coiled through the air and went wide. Vale was the one to watch, Avery surmised. She seemed to take being the target in her stride, and clapped back with a quipped back with a sparkling cracker jinx which broke up the suspense of the stands with a chaotic blast of brightly coloured fireworks that send sparks and whizzing firecracker-like explosions out from the point of aimed impact. Neither of the siblings were fast enough to avoid the rocketing zips, Ying narrowly avoided the main blast but a tail-cracker spiralled out from the main explosion towards her, exploding close to her arm; burning a portion of her robe. The main blast hit Ming squarely, his torso clothing was a tragic litany of mapped explosions that made sense of the chaotic nature of the spell. The smell of sulphur filled the air, and the smell of singed hair and marred skin; duelling really was violent and Avery's eyes were alight with a different kind of fire. He didn't intervene just now, urging the teams to crack on and get the job done with a simple gesture, before he joined his fingers in thought, or expectation of what was to come...

Something had seemed off about this Vale Ashwood. He could not quite put his finger on it; the girl still seemed every bit as untethered to reality as she always had been. But there was something a bit different; something that kept drawing his eyes and distracting his focus. Something was different about Vale Ashwood.

Something was wrong about her.

It made him uncertain. Still, Hui-Ming proceeded with the bull-headed conviction he displayed when faced with adversity, and did what he had done in these duels – start big, and draw attention to himself. If it works, his side gets a big leg up. If not, the opponents know to come after him, rather than his teammates. It was a tried strategy, and one that caused him a lot of frustration at always being taken out first. In a duel where he was partnering with his little sister, it had seemed like the only appropriate strategy, after all.

Still, he had not quite expected the kind of response he got from Ashwood; it was definitely not what he would have expected in a dueling circuit, and had left him, momentarily, stunned.

His ears were still ringing, and his focus distracted – his eyes kept returning to Ashwood spouting her latest tiresome nonsense. Except… it wasn’t exactly the kind of dreamer nonsense she used to say before.

Was it?

Hui-Ying said something he missed in his distraction, but the words sounded concerned. He couldn’t have her worried about him of all things.

Hui-Ming gathered himself slowly, even as he dusted himself off. It would not do to show them how off-balance he was, and so stuck to the familiar things to ground himself – like the outcome of Ashwood’s spell choice.

“Such a shame,” he said out loud, seemingly unimpressed with the choice of spell. For all of dueling messiness, Hui-Ming particularly abhorred fire and all those things associated, because they left palpable damage on his clothes – and he’d have to get them replaced. Magical repair was possible, of course, but left the clothes feeling strange and odd on his skin.

“Not to worry, 妹 sister.” He said slowly to his sister, even as eyes returned to Ashwood. Avery had cast a blindfolding spell, but he had not caught who the target was.

His eyes flicked to Avery as his best friend said something them being rabbits – was that meant to call out Hui-Ying’s zodiac? But then, if Ying was the Rabbit – graceful and compassionate; then he was the reliable Ox.

“Take a deep breath.” He told his sister, even as his focus went back, instinctively, to Ashwood – what was with that? “Clear thought, and deliberate action; that’s what we need. We aren’t behind yet.”
