Dennis Tumberton: whiz at spells and apt at learning magic, but absolutely unapplied in anything else. Possibly his worst subject and his all time most boring: History of Magic. Not only was it dreadful, but he had arrived so early. For the spring semester, Dennis had switched some of the times of his classes to make room for other activities. He wanted to try to be more involved, so certain changes had to be made. One of those classes he was all too eager to change to later in the week was History of Magic. The young boy, however, mistook the times and arrived 45 minutes early! In the past he was always just barely on time.

What was the Ravenclaw to do. He let out a room echoing grunt, assuming the class was empty as far as he could see. Why did it have to be History of Magic? Dennis flopped in a chair, somewhere in the middle of the classroom and ruffled his hair in frustration before laying his head in his folded arms on the table. He wasn’t sure what would make this period any better, he thought really nothing could.

At least he had Transfiguration after this. This thought lifted his spirits slightly and he sat up straighter in the chair and started pulling out his book and notebook. He caught sight of a whistle in his bag he'd taken with him for practice. Perfect. He could at least practice since the room seemed unoccupied. He got out his wand and put the whistle onto the table. With the swish of his wand and the appropriate incantation, he...gave the whistle a tattoo of a watch. Not quite what he was going for. This day had no end in disappoints.

He tapped the freshly tatted whistle with his wand to hear the tink of the metal, filled with a continued melancholy. He put his wand and the whistle away and doodled in his notebook to pass the time. Maybe he would know one of the classmates.

Dennis would sit there, alone and bored for about fifteen minutes before Nellie arrived. For her part, the Hufflepuff liked to be early. It had nothing to do with being smart or partiularly eager to learn, but everything to do with her anxiety. She liked history, even muggle history, but her worst nightmare was being delayed on her way to class and walking into a room with a lesson underway and managing to pull all of the attention in the room. No, thank you. So Nellie always left much earlier than needed and arrived the same.

The corners of her lips tugged upwards into a smile when she spotted Dennis in the room. He'd even beat her there. "Must be a Ravenclaw thing," she thought to herself. Having missed the incident with the whistle, she'd note that he was doodling in his notebook when she approached and he already warm smile seemed to brighten more.

The girl chose the desk beside her friend, setting her books down as she spoke. "Is this seat taken?" Though she didn't actually wait for an answer as she sat. Dennis was off, somehow, though she couldn't actually put her finger on the what or why. Instead, her brows knit together in some concern as she continued. "Everything okay, Denners?" Choosing his nickname had been strategic. The hope was it would snap him out of whatever it was that was bothering him.

Dennis was deep into his sour thoughts when Nellie showed up for class. If he had been in a better mood he would have noticed and been impressed that a Hufflepuff didn’t come bounding in at the last second, like she came racing out to the lake last year. However, there would be no witty quips from the Ravenclaw student as he scribbled rather aggressively at this point, writing, ‘History of Magic? More like History of….’ But never finishing the thought, he was beginning to think he had no originality at all…

His attention to his notebook was broken for only a second when a student asked if she could sit next to him. He mumbled his reply and wasn’t at all shocked that the person wait of this reply. His messy red hair that was all strangely now after working so hard to perfect his stylishly unkempt look and fell in a way to obscure his view of his favorite Hufflepuff.

Then the girl called him “Denners.” His head snapped up and looked at the girl for the first time. So fast in fact that his hair followed quickly, settling into an even more unsightly matted mess if ever it could get worse! A silly sight indeed. “Nellie!” He half shouted, forgetting she was literally right next to him. “You are in this class too?” He asked, almost pleading for it to be true.

A part of him instantly thought it was now the best class ever in Hogwarts history. He didn’t actually have any classes with his friends - completely forgetting herbology and potions both of which have several friends. He drooped back a little thinking about her question. “I am not really good at this class. As shocking as that might seem, Ravenclaws aren’t good at every subject.” He returned her smile. She had such a heartwarming smile. It was hard to stay melancholy around her. Maybe she didn’t have cooties, the cutest ones don’t - so he heard…

He wanted to ask how she has been. They hadn’t seen each other since the lake last year. He wanted to ask her all about her holiday and what she did. He was always so eager to talk with her, but today of all days he didn’t have quite enough energy to blurt everything out at once.

The lack of immediate recognition or much of a response at all made Nellie's brows furrow. In the few seconds it had taken him to notice it was Nellie, her mind was immediately trying to figure out what she'd done to offend the boy. Had it been squeezing his arm in excitement when they'd spotted the centaur at the lake? However, the excitement that he did finally turn to her with made her release a relieved breath. "I am!" She laughed, glad to have a friend in the class, as well.

Her shoulders rose and fell in a shrug. "If it helps, I don't really think Ravenclaws are good at every class. Being intelligent doesn't necessarily mean being interested in everything." As they talked, she was getting out her supplies, along with a stupid quill and ink well. "I guess you'll just have to work as hard at this as I do at charms." She gave her friend a playful wink. "Because even if you're not good at every subject, I've never known a Ravenclaw to be okay with failing one." Not that she really knew many Ravenclaws. "History of Magic is really cool to me, but I think it's that way for a lot of us raised in the muggle world. It's like every day is a story about a new fairy tale." She laughed again. She had a sweet laugh. The idea of helping him with the subject hadn't even occured to her yet.

"How was your holiday?" If Dennis wouldn't ask, Nellie would. "I don't know... how does a wizard celebrate? I can't imagine it's exactly the same as a muggle."

The delight on Nellie’s face seemed to put him more at ease with his current situation. Was her tease also a compliment? He never had a girl wink at him before. Dennis wasn’t even sure he knew how to do that. What did it mean? Maybe she was hungry. Maybe she wanted to eat him? That all sounded too scary to the little boy. He was glad for the topic change.

The way she talked about History of Magic seemed to make it more interesting for him in a way that he couldn’t understand. It had to be some advanced form of magic girls cast on boys to make them more interested in what they have to say. That was Dennis’ only conclusion, which, to him, was really quite logical. “I never thought of history like that before,” the ginger admitted as he subconsciously fixed his hair.

“To me, it was always just a reason for the old lady to talk about dead things…” he continued, obviously anyone over 14 years old is old to an 11 year old. It made sense to Dennis that Nellie would find all this stuff fascinating. A lot of this would probably be the first she’s heard of any of it. It seems his perspective was slowly changing, very slowly.

He didn’t have much time to think about how incredibly old the History of Magic professor was, because Nellie seemed equally excited to talk about vacation as he was. “My holiday was good! I stayed at Hogwarts for my first Christmas. My parents asked me to stay behind to get immersed in the cultures here.” His voice was excited, even though it might have seemed like sour news. Dennis was perplexed. Does he share his decision, or does he ask her about her holiday. He decided he would rather hear Nellie before sharing his news. “How was your vacation?”

Nellie had a very warm smile. It was one of those smiles that seemed to be almost contagious in a way. If one looked closely, they might even spot a merry sparkle in her almond eyes. "Of course you haven't! This stuff was just fairy tales for muggles." The idea that it was just a boring teacher drone on about dead people earned a nod. It was a complaint her dad heard at the beginning of every year. That was until his students got to know Han. Opinions often changed when being around her father. "It shouldn't be some boring teacher drone on and on about dates and random history facts. It's all about having the right teacher. My dad teaches muggle history, though, so it's all interesting to me."

She didn't mind discussing the holidays. It was more learning about wizarding culture. Fascinating stuff. "My vacation was good! We did presents and lots of food a cookies." She laughed as she thought about her mom and her stupid reindeer headband. "We had a Christmas party. It was good! What do wizards even do for Yule? Is it the same as Christmas?" The Hufflepuff glanced over her shoulder. Class had to be nearing just about time to begin, right? Maybe not. Was there a clock in here someplace? In any case, she refocused on her friend. Students were beginning to shuffle in, now. Most looked utterly miserable.

Dennis tried to really care about what Nellie was saying about History of Magic being like fairy tales. He was, however, far more interested in this thing called “Muggle History.” Though he lived in a city filled with muggles he never once stopped to consider that they too might have ‘history.’ He really wondered what it might even be about. To the 11 year old, muggles felt more like faceless background actors. People there to fill a scene but didn’t have any actual knowledge of the ‘real’ [magical] world around them. He pondered this revelation for as long as his little mind could muster - all of about maybe a minute.

“Oh wow. I would really like to see a muggle Christmas! I just hung out with some housemates and I got a cool sweater from my parents,” the ginger answered as he thought about how we was going to talk about the really important decision he made over the break. “Oh! Nellie! Guess what!” Dennis started as the other students filed in. “I decided I am going to try out for the dueling club!” He said in an excited whisper. He could barely contain the excitement of the news but at the same time he felt a bit embarrassed to say it out loud in a classroom that other students could potentially laugh at. He wasn’t at all confident in the choice but he was excited that he was trying.

Having teachers as parents often meant you acquired a lot of knowledge about their fields. The Hufflepuff was a fount of random facts about many different historical events. Nellie regarded muggle history much in the same way she regarded the history of magic. They were stories, but muggle history lacked the element of fantasy that wizarding history had, at least in her opinion. History was cool.

"Oh, cool! Let me know when you're wearing the sweater so I can see it." The level of excitement Dennis continued their conversation with was met with raised brows. The girl hadn't even had a chance to ask what before Dennis was excitedly telling he his news. "Oh, wow!" No one seemed to hear his excited whisper, at least not that Nellie noticed. Out of respect for his apparent desire to keep it private, though, she also lowered her voice to respond. Kids were really coming in now and she was pretty sure that class was about to begin any moment. "Good luck! I'm sure you'll be great at it." The girl was excited for her friend. "I think I want to go out for quidditch when there's a spot. Maybe chaser or seeker? Though maybe I should duel, instead. That way we can duel eachother." Her grin was playful but bright.

Her supplies were laid out neatly on her desk and ready to go. Now, they simply had to wait for the professor.

It was almost time for her next class and Meli was feeling particularly tired and lazy. The snow has been falling since the day began and she was feeling very comfortable sitting in her midnight blue velvet armchair while reading the new romance she had bought the other day visiting Dragon Alley. However, a quick glance to her wristwatch told her that it was time to get up and get ready. Placing her cup of tea on the coffee table next to her, Melisande stood up and paused the gramophone that was playing soft, relaxing jazz. As soon as the music faded, she closed her eyes to search for the mental strength to convince her feet to move towards her duty.

While in that "motivational transe", her thoughts got interrupted by the sound of voices coming from her classroom. “I never thought of history like that before,” a voice of a young boy could be heard, “To me, it was always just a reason for the old lady to talk about dead things…” he said. Meli's eyes opened immediately, "Old lady?" She muttered incredulous. Taking a look at the mirror on the wall, she observed her own reflection. Of course there were already some signs of the time that had already passed, but... "Old lady, Honestly!" She said dismissively before walking towards her bookshelf to collect some books. Surrendering to her sense of responsibility, Melisande finally left the cozy office to enter the History of Magic classroom.

Arriving there, the professor sighed discreetly while dropping her books on top of the old working table. Looking around she noticed two students. One was a girl with silky dark hair wearing round glasses, and judging by her robes' colors, she was her fellow housemate. The boy, however, wore blue-black robes, which identified him as a Ravenclaw. Meli narrowed her eyes towards him in a playful manner, so he was the culprit! "Good afternoon!" She happily greeted and smiled kindly at her students before turning her back to them to write some notes on the blackboard, the white chalk following her wand's movements.

The sound wave of footsteps invaded the now busy room, letting her know that the other students had also arrived and so it was time for her class to begin. Still holding her wand, now with both her hands, Melisande faced the rows of tables and welcoming her students with a bright smile. At that moment, she completely forgot those lazy minutes from before, being very happy for the opportunity to teach, nothing brought her more joy than being a teacher. "Welcome folks! Get your things ready, let's get start!" She begun.

More students filled the room. Dennis couldn’t remember the class being this full in his other time slot. Maybe everyone else was moving their schedules so that History of Magic came later in the week too. This was the only logical explanation to him. The seat to his left was filled and then the whole row. His attention snapped back to Nellie when she mentioned Quidditch. Quidditch was awesome! But way more complicated to play than to watch. He had thought about playing the sport but he had decided against it because he felt he was too week to even lift a quaffle.

“I’m sure you would do great at Quidditch,” Dennis encouraged his friend, starting to get his notes in order, realizing he never finished the line ‘History of Magic? More like History of…’ He didn’t know what to put here but he was becoming more convinced that History of Magic wasn’t so dreadful after all. Perhaps he just needed a more open mind to new experience. He shook his head. Complete hogwash.

Nellie mentioned dueling and Dennis flashed her a mischievous grin, “You better be prepared, I won’t hold back.” Just because you are a cute girl, he suddenly thought but was thankful the teacher walked in and he shut up.

Did Professor Melisande look at him? He tried his hardest to disappear in this class and on the day he changed his schedule, that’s when she notices him? Did she hear him call her old? Now that he thought about it, he hadn’t been very quiet because he thought they were the only ones here! Luckily for him she turned around and he breathed a sigh of relief as even more students piled in. Perhaps it wasn’t him. Perhaps it was a fly she saw or maybe a ghost. They were after all in Hogwarts. Teaming with ghosts, the castle is. That is also the only explanation.

Professor Melisande started writing on the chalk board and he shot Nellie a look, half terrified and half relieved. It might have ended up looking like he was constipated and perhaps he was in a way…emotionally so. The professor, after a short while, turned back around and started the class. If he wanted to ask Nellie her thoughts about what the teacher might have heard, he’d have to wait until after class or risk losing points.
