Nestled by the outskirts of the Great Lake, Alis found herself immersed in the serenity of descending dusk. Every now and then, she would lift her gaze from the letter she was composing for her parents, taking a moment to admire the surrounding scenery. Although a mere fortnight had passed since her arrival at Hogwarts, it felt like an eternity. The sensation wasn’t solely due to the vast amount of knowledge to absorb and acquaint herself with, but also because she had bid farewell to summer in her hometown only to find herself admiring fall’s vibrant presence at her new school a heartbeat later.

The abrupt transition in seasons, coupled with her new surroundings, created the illusion that a year had elapsed since she had begun this new chapter of life. The sky, bathed in tangerine and rose hues, served as an enchanting backdrop for her thoughts as she delicately etched words onto parchment. The quill moved effortlessly, guided by the smooth strokes of her hand, while the crisp air lightly brushed her freckled nose.
It was truly peaceful here- little more than the occasional serenade of various birds and the subtle rippling of water broke the silence, accompanied by the gentle rustling of leaves. The young Gryffindor girl wondered, considering this was one of her first opportunities to explore all Hogwarts had to offer, if it was always this quiet here. Pausing to collect her thoughts, Alis set her quill aside and absorbed the view that unfolded across the castle grounds, savoring the rich, earthy scent of autumn with a deep breath. She embraced the peace of the moment, the bark of the tree behind her cooling her back as she leaned against it, legs comfortably tucked beneath her. It was a calm prelude to the imminent lively conversations of students at dinner.

Alis’s mind wandered towards home, wondering how the fall evening was unfolding in Wellington. Imagining the echoes of laughter in the dining hall, the familial warmth, and the delightful aroma of Whitby's culinary creations as she bosses everyone around. In fact, that was Miss Whitby to you, and the rest of the world, according to the headstrong house-elf herself. A smirk played on Alis's lips as she recalled her affection for the very sassy, very free, and very handsomely compensated elf. She did so much more than manage the Nyx household; she was an integral part of their family. In fact, to a stranger, it might seem as if she were the master of the domain- a notion that the Nyx family was more than fine with.

With her father frequently away on business, and her mother managing the daily chaos caused by her two lively brothers before they attended Hogwarts, Alis couldn't imagine a world without the firm but caring presence of Miss Whitby. She was also quite a fashionista, consistently sporting what she deemed the latest (colorful) trends as she paved her own path in the world. Alis smiled as she recalled one Christmas when the elf had entertained the family with a stunning fashion show, featuring the new collection crafted by Alis’s mother over the preceding months. Collective ooohs & aaahs echoed in the family room as Whitby showed off her favorite new ensembles, snapping with each wardrobe change with her hand on her hip and head held high, as if her presence itself were a precious gift. Alis & her mother had exchanged a knowing look, stifling a laugh as they marveled at the Queen of Fashion herself, cheering Whitby on. The memory was a treasured one.

Dispelling the impending wave of homesickness that threatened to wash over her, Alis turned her attention back to the captivating scene before her- a sea of red, orange, and gold leaves along with the remnants of sunlight mirroring on the Lake. With a sigh, she picked up her quill, determined to finish her letter. She chronicled the initial weeks of her classes, highlighting her favorites, the students she had encountered and deemed potential friends… and any other details that might reassure her parents about her well-being. Being the baby of the family wasn't as idyllic as it may seem, but she couldn't deny exploiting that very fact to her advantage once… or twice.

Completing her letter, Alis gently folded it in half, holding the parchment in one hand while swiftly brushing her robes free of any debris with the other. As she moved to tuck the letter into the book that functioned as her makeshift desk, an unexpected gust of wind (or so she presumed) snatched the letter from her feeble grasp. "No!" Alis exclaimed, stretching out her arm and standing on her toes to snatch the escaping parchment but to no avail. She watched as it danced higher and higher on the breeze, swirling until it settled onto a gnarled branch above. "Brilliant," she hissed, dropping her shoulders in utter annoyance. At least the wind hadn’t sent it sailing down the Lake. Her mind raced through countless strategies to retrieve the letter, unwilling to go through the process of rewriting it.

Well, she wasn't going to just stand here looking at it like a bloody idiot and wait for it to drift back down, was she? It... was possible. She suddenly found herself wishing some crafty, helpful student was lurking about when it had only been moments ago that she had been hoping she was the only soul in the general vicinity. "This would be an excellent time to know the Summoning Charm," she muttered to herself, tightening her scarf before crossing her arms in defiance. Head tilted back with her glacial gaze focused on the canopy of branches above, Alis began contemplating the pros and cons of recovering versus rewriting the letter the next day. Stars began their subtle debut in the cloudless evening sky, serving as a gentle reminder that she needed to make her way to the Great Hall for dinner soon enough.

Arianna Swann was bored, which wasn't exactly a rare occurrence. She was so bored that it was painful, almost. Humming a light tune that wouldn't leave her head, Arianna wandered the grounds with an idle sort of spring in her step.

There was a secluded spot just on the outskirts of the grounds that Arianna had made into her little hiding space. It was well inconspicuous to those walking along the recommended pathway, although students could stumble upon it with relative ease if they dare to venture so far out, although the chances were quite slim.

People had always made the forest out to be 'extremely dangerous', and unsettling, but Arianna couldn't see that. Though there was that subtle unease lingering in its presence, she found herself drawn to its tranquility and serene ambiance. It was also the case of just having that common sense. Obviously going so deep into the forest could prove perilous for foolish students, stupid students that is, but not so much for Arianna. She had never had any desire to venture too far inside... not alone, anyway.

The afternoon had an unexpected warmth to say it was meant to be heading into winter now. The Slytherin donned her usual black jacket, with a white silk jumper underneath, one of which was obviously of high quality and most likely new bought. Her skirt which ended just above her knees danced around with the wind peacefully, almost in sync with that untamed white hair of hers it wasn't for it having a mind of its own. By now it had grown to around her shoulders, remained an unruly and disheveled mass. But instead of having any bangs to conceal her striking features, she had it hidden beneath a winter hat with a few strands still finding a way to fall back into their natural place.

Her hands buried themselves into her overly large pockets to keep herself warm whilst she walked down a slope - not too far ahead from where she would normally take a turning off the path and divert onto the grass. It must have been about an hour or so, getting lost in her thoughts before a abrupt rustling sound not far from where she sat had startled her. Normally, she would have dismissed such noises as insignificant, thinking it was nothing other than a rat or a bird, but these sounds were persistent and springy. It wasn't something she could ignore. The presence of the unknown made her feel on edge. Her blue hues narrowed as she strained to discern the figure, while she raised to her feet and pressed her back against a tree trunk. Was it a figment of her imagination, or was someone truly present at this late hour? Following her perhaps? Intriguing yet unsettling thoughts began to accumulate in her mind as she turned her gaze.

She made out the individual as a fellow student. A girl to be exact. A young woman approximately the same age wearing an expression that conveyed either curiosity or concern - it was difficult to discern in the dim light but an annoying one to analyze at such an untimely hour. The Slytherin had never seen anyone around here whilst on her visits. Whatever the reason was, she wasn't happy with it. It had interfered with her evening.

Yet her own expression showed calmness, revealing little of her true emotions despite the simmering anger wanting to unleash and snap at the unfortunate girl for disrupting her peaceful walk around the grounds.

The Gryffindor didn't seem to have noticed her yet.

She took more of a cautious and silent approach, slowly stepping out from the trees and onto the path behind him. The thought of scaring the girl had crossed her mind. Having thought about a moment like this enough for long enough, it felt like a perfect opportunity to use it. But she was sure it was to have made her look potentially foolish and immature. In her mind, if she was caught acting her age it would be perceived as a sign of weakness, so having that morbid look on her face was her mask and a way of keeping people away. It was a silly thing to think, but her stubbornness always prevailed when it came to showing emotions. The fear of being mocked or ridiculed if her guard was down plagued her thoughts. What if she stuttered or pouted? To her, these would be indicators of vulnerability she was unwilling to reveal. It was a sign of weakness in her mind.

“Why, you do understand that the wind is a rather common phenomenon of the natural world?” Her voice was tinted with a thick coat of sarcasm as her gaze drifted to the flying parchment paper. A satisfied sneer graced her lips.
