The castle of Hogwarts was mesmerizing. Awe inspiring, and wonderous. Every positive adjective that she knew from the many books that she had inhaled in her life and the vocabulary she had amassed couldn't come close to descirbing the wonders of the Wizarding World and this beautiful home that she had moved into. Her new solace had become the large antique and ornate library that housed the information she so desperatly craved.
Being a muggle-born, she wished that someone had come to her with the information regarding this world much earlier. Three months was hardly enough time to become accustomed to the nuances of the Wizarding World. She was absolutely confounded by the idea of magic in general. For the vast majority of her life she was raised with the idea that magic involved a man in a tuxedo and a stove top hat, working at a carnival and pulling rabbits out of his hat or combining several scarves in his hand and pulling them out.
In the muggle world, there weren't flying broom sticks, or such things as talking paintings. Not that she didn't enjoy the conversations with the portraits or the ghosts. They were all quite friendly. But she wished that she could talk to her classmates about muggle things she missed like Nutella and her iPod. Still she had to admit there were things that she would miss from the Wizarding World when she went home for the holidays.
Currently Siobhan had her nose stuck in one of the many books she had checked out, as she wandered back from the Library to her common room. Not that she didn't like wandering from place to place around this ancient castle, she had begun to feel the burns from the lactic acid coursing through her legs from the amount of walking. Even in Killarney, back on the farm, she'd never felt this muscle strain and their farm was quite big. She hoped that soon this burn would go away and that she would become more adjusted to the activity level that was required in order to attend classes.
Siobhan stopped for a second to catch her breath, leaning against a statue of a one eyed witch with a hump to adjust the side strap of her bookbag. It groaned under the weight of her textbooks and her library books but she wasn't strong enough to carry all of them up to the very top of the Gryffindor Tower. Honestly she was about to start sleeping in the library in a fort under the table instead of making the trip from the dorm room to the back of the library.
A scraping sound suddenly filled the empty hallway, pulling Siobhan's attention from adjusting her backpack. Where was that coming from? It was very faint but she knew it was coming from somewhere close. She straightened up to stretch her neck, looking for the noise but it had disappeared. She leaned against the statue once again to adjust her bookbag, taking it off her shoulder in order to rearrange the books. One particular tome bore a very hefty spine and it was jabbing into her leg everytime she took a step.
Suddenly the statue gave way and Siobhan gave a yelp as she fell backwards into a dusty cavern. The scraping sound of the witch suddenly started to move back into place trapping her in.
Siobhan rushed to the backend of the stature and began to bang against it with her hands trying to attract the attention of a passerby.

Hiding in Plain Sight
After three long months of hard work, Augustus was thrilled at the prospect of the upcoming holidays, and the vacation that they implied. Over the past few weeks especially, his schedule had been hectic, between classes, exams, essays and the honest try to keep up a semblance of social life. But now he was looking upon a well-deserved time off in a couple of days. He only had one last exam in two days and an essay to hand over the next day. After that, he was going to rest like his life depended on it. He was actually still weighting his options about what he ought to do for the holidays. Should he go back to London and spend them with his family ? Or should he stay in the castle instead and have a taste of his first Hogwarts Christmas ? For now, he hadn’t decided yet, but as the time passed, he was leaning more and more towards the second option. After all this time spent in the castle, he started to feel like home, but he was so busy with his studies that he didn’t have the time to properly explore the school as he had wished. Staying during this vacation would be the perfect occasion for him to do so. Plus, his mother told him that Hogwarts’s festivities were something else and he was eager to witness it for himself.
The thought of his upcoming exam interrupted his imagination. After all, he still wasn’t done with the trimester and he had to keep focus. With a heartfelt sigh, he got up from his bed, picked up his bookbag and headed out of the dormitory. On his way out, he passed through the common room, greeted a few people with head nods, hand waves and a few “hellos” before making his way to the Great Hall. Today’s plan was to study all day, but he couldn’t do so on an empty stomach ! It was true that studying required a lot of focus, hence the need of a good and balanced meal, but Augustus knew himself all too well to ignore the fact that he was clearly evading that fatidic moment of long hours of boring studying. At least classes like Charms or Flying had more practical exams, that made studying (practicing would be a more accurate term) way more entertaining. His coming up test though, was in History of Magic. Mind you, he absolutely loved the class, but he’d rather swing his wand practising spells than going through old books and class notes.
After a rather sumptuous meal, it was finally time for Augustus to head to the Study Room. Upon getting up, he realised he had made the rookie mistake of stuffing himself. He felt heavy and bloated, but mostly tired. He craved a nap deeply. But no. He shook his head as he forced himself towards the exit of the Great Hall. It was time to live through the consequences of his own actions. He would study no matter how sleepy he got. At this thought he started walking with a more determined pace, trying to hype himself up for the upcoming agony.
“ Come on. You can do this. One last exam. Then its resting time, he thought to himself”
Suddenly, his train of thought was abruptly interrupted by a fading noise. As he turned around, he couldn’t see anyone else in the vast corridor. Was he finally losing it ?
- Help ! HELP !
This time he had heard it clearly. Someone was in trouble ! He looked around nervously, all his concentration focused upon finding the source of the call for help. As it resonated again, Augustus thought he had identified it. It seemed to come from … a witch’s statue ? As he looked at the sculpture with wonder, he had to remind himself that he was, in fact, at Hogwarts. How surprising could it be that a statue would talk ? He carefully approached it and observed it.
- Hello ?, he asked hesitantly. He felt ridiculous talking to a statue but hey, if she needed help, it was his duty to answer the call. How … how can I help ?
