There's typically a foundation in schooling. You start in preschool with your shapes and colors and eventually you're onto complicated maths and writing a thesis about a remote tribe in the Amazon. When it came to magic, however, Nellie had no foundation at all. She, like many at Hogwarts, had never heard her parents use an incantation. It was a bit like trying to drive a car after never having ridden in one. She imagined it was, anyway. The first year was going to need to study. A lot. The common room could get quite rowdy at times, but even at it's calmest, it was still a place for socialization. Nelli wanted a dedicated space to study. For these reasons, she was going to need to get comfortable using the study room.

Making an effort to assimilate into wizard culture, she was using a quill today. Pens were so much easier. It still baffled her that magic existed but those that had magic preferred archaic means of communication. Owls instead of cell phones. Quills instead of pens. She didn't get it, but this was her life now and she'd figure it out.

Today she was working on studying for her History of Magic class. Much like in the real world, many thought the class was pointless, but she loved it. She soaked up the stories like a sponge. It was fascinating.

Her books and supplies were spread out over the desk as she was not the most organized individual in the world, especially not when she was focused. The dates were what gave her the most trouble and she kept muttering them over and over in an attempt to commit them to memory. She likely looked a bit mad doing it.

It was closer in the early hours, the clock slowly going to lunch time. Lucky for Alex, it was still closer to breakfast. He had slept though most of it, as he stayed up to late reading. He rushed to the great hall hoping to grab a quick snack, breakfast, anything really. When he entered the hall he was happy to see, that there was still some things on the tables. He didn't care what one he grabbed his food off of, just as long as he ate. The first on he saw was the Ravenclaw's table, all covered in blue. The trays where mostly empty, all good for him. There was still some bagel half's. With cream cheese. Even luckier for him, it was his favorite kind. Cinnamon raisin.

He had to reach over a Raven claw to get to the bagel, Letting out a quick, "Sorry!" Before he left, almost as quick as he came. He nearly ran into someone as he left the hall. Also giving them a quick sorry. He slowed his pacing a bit, just so that he would not bug anymore people. He had a plan for the day, he was going to study. Quite boring if you think about it, but it could be worse. He could be stuck in detention, for whatever reason. Not that he would do anything to get detention. But still. He had heard that it could be quite boring.

It did not take long at all to get to the study room. Seeing as it was only two floors up. He just walked up the last bit of stairs, and made his way down the hall. Into the room. He could very well study in the common room, but to him, the common room was for relaxing. Sitting around with a good book, talking with his house mates. It could be a good place to study, but he needed to be in the right mood to study around only Gryffindor's. They could be quite loud, and it was not the super best place to study.

The room was quite full, most of the tables being taken up by students. With small groups sitting together, so he would more then likely have to share a table. He was all good with that, just needed to find someone that also would not mind. He walked further into the room, and saw a girl sitting at one of the desk's. She was by herself, with what looked to be her homework taking up a good amount of the desk. "Hey, could you move a bit of your stuff?" He asked walking up to her. "If not I could find another spot, the place is just pretty full" He added on with a small laugh, looking at the room.

This was going to be more difficult than she'd thought. In muggle school, she'd been passing. However, she very much doubted that if she'd continued, she'd ever win any awards. Mediocre was probably the best way to describe her academic career. That was no different now in Hogwarts. The stakes were simply higher, especially when it came to spells. Those were kind of important.

So when the boy arrived to get a seat, Nellie didn't immediately notice his approach. It was his voice that pulled her thoughts from her work to refocus on the world around her. "Hm?" It took a moment for her brain to catch up with what he'd said. When it did, she glanced around at the full room, looking appropriately embarrassed by her messy study space. "Oh! I'm sorry." With a half stand, she leaned over the table and began tidying up, grabbing books and parchment to organize into neat spaces. "You're okay to sit. Sometimes when I get focused I kind of stop paying attention to things. Like organization." She gestured to the space that was now straightened up and ready for a new kid to take a seat. Her words had come from her at a kind of hurried pace as she tried to explain in an effort to apolgize.

When she once more sat, he might notice the slightly rosy hue to her otherwise olive cheeks. "Um... what are you studying for?"
