Jam trudged along the slippery grounds of the courtyard, pushing her glasses up her nose. Her other hand held a book with a violet cover and silver accents. The book did not fail to capture the girl’s attention the moment she started reading it, as it was full of wonderful descriptions and vivid details.

The Ravenclaw was on the way to her favourite reading spot, but was too engrossed in the novel to resist the urge to read it on the way there. So, off she went, paying less and less attention to her surroundings as she walked.

Just as she passed the fountain, a large figure suddenly appeared towering over her. The shadow of the figure darkened the pages of her book, forcing her to peel her eyes away from the text and look up. A sick feeling swirled in her stomach as a natural instinct, because this was a scene she had imagined a million times before she arrived at Hogwarts.

She felt lucky that it had not happened sooner, but was a little upset that she couldn’t avoid it altogether. Before she could think any more of the situation, Jam felt the novel snatched out of her hands, and everything after that became a blur as she fell to the ground, groaning in pain.

As the students rushed through the corridors, Kaito glanced around, looking for someone in particular. Jam. The girl he met during charms, they both agreed to meet up today during lunch. Kaito was eager to meet her, anything to get out of History of Magic! He sighed in frustration as he was pulled to a stop. This was a one way corridor, the walls were narrow in this part, which meant students could only go single file. He grumbled quietly as he let the other students through, before rushing through the thin gap, walking across into the great hall. He scanned the Ravenclaw table for any signs of the brown haired girl. Nothing. Maybe she was a bit late? After all, he was quite early. He chose to sit on the gryffindor table, popping a grape in his mouth as he waited.

Soon minutes felt like hours. Kaito could feel time ticking on and he couldn't stand it anymore. Where was Jam? Was she held up somehow? would it be a teacher? He stood up, striding out of the great hall, determined to find her. As he walked across the hallway he remembered Jam telling him her last lesson was DADA. He started walking towards that classroom. As he passed a corridor which looked out to the corridor, he saw a boy standing, laughing over a student on the floor, holding a book up. He quickly looked away. He didn't want to catch trouble on his first week. He glanced back at the fallen student and froze. He recognised those features. The glasses were slightly crooked but he knew right away it was Jam. He felt a strong feeling in himself. Anger. He immediately picked up the pace, walking towards the person laughing. Yep. He was correct, it was Jam, on the floor as she held her stomach, wounded perhaps?

He stalked up to the person, shoving them roughly to the floor. The boy yelped, crashing into the mud and he scowled, locking eyes with him. "Back off." He snarled, eyes dark with hatred. The boy's features scrunched as he glared at him. "She deserved it!" Kaito stepped forwards and the boy immediately scrambled back. "My bad! my bad!" he yelped, seeing the anger in Kaito's eyes. Kaito clicked his tongue as he faced the boy again. "From now on, I want you to respect my friend." He snapped, gazing down at him with a cold stare. The boy gulped, nodding before getting to his feet and rushing off. Kaito watched as he ran off before turning to Jam. He offered a hand before pulling her up. "You alright?" he asked, concern in his eyes. He then turned to the book, now in the mud. He sighed softly as he picked it up, wiping some mud off with his robes before glancing at her. "I think this belongs to you." He smiled.

Jam’s head was still spinning from everything that had just happened. One moment she was on the ground and the next she was watching a blurry but familiar figure defend her. The voice was recognisable, but the girl fixed her crooked glasses to get a better view. Her suspicions were immediately confirmed, as it was her friend Kaito who came to her rescue.

Jam reached out her hand to grab the book, cringing slightly at the mud smeared across the cover. Despite this, the Ravenclaw girl returned her friend’s smile with a small but thankful smile of her own. As she got up from the ground, Jam felt bad about the whole situation. If Kaito was reported, he could get into a lot of trouble, and she didn’t want to be the reason for a friend’s demise.

It was definitely a surprise to Jam. Is this really the same quiet boy she had met in her charms class? She thought, but smiled at the thought of her friend being super protective. “Thank you for rescuing me,” Jam said gratefully, playfully sending a punch to the Gryffindor’s arm. “I didn’t have you pegged as the protective type, but I think it’s really awesome!”

Jam fixed her bangs consciously and wiped her coat with hidden urgency. She didn’t have a mirror on her, and she was sure she looked a mess after the troubling encounter. The girl was quite a perfectionist when it came to her looks, so being in front of a friend looking this way made her feel quite embarrassed.

“So…” The girl started, not wanting the silence to make it awkward, “How did you find me? I didn’t expect many people to be out here during this time, let alone you.” Jam shoved her hands into her pockets by habit, widening her eyes as she waited a response from her friend.

Kaito wasn't usually a violent person, or looked like one, really. As a small child, he'd always be passive aggressive, he was probably still like that. He would rarely pick fights, but would be moody and ignorant. However, somehow, he shoved a student today, he would most likely get reported. whatever. he clicked his tongue as he narrowed his eyes with irritation. his parent's wouldn't mind. he then focused on Jam, checking if she was injured. "did he hurt you?"he asked.

He frowned as he watched her scrunch her face up at the sight of the book but smiled as she thanked him, his smile growing bigger as she punched him on the arm playfully. He flicked her forehead, laughing. "You're an exception. " He teased. Then Jam started fussing with her hair and coat, obviously worried about how she looked. He didn't blame her. She didn't seem to have any mud on her. "Don't worry, you look great." he assured her, flashing her a grin.

as she asked him how he found her, he folded his arms. "We were going to meet going to meet during lunch, remember? Since you didn't show up, I got a bit worried so I decided to look for you." his eyes sparkled as he spoke. "And it's a good thing I did. Who was that guy anyways?" He asked, eyes hardening as he thought of that person.

“Oh, no, I don’t think I got hurt.” Jam assured Kaito. Even if she did, she wouldn’t want to worry him. It was the least she could do, knowing the consequences that he would face if a staff member was alerted about his violence. The school was pretty strict about student violence, and were especially hard on their punishments to ensure that such events don’t happen again. It was insane, really, for the boy to step in. Jam was glad he did though, because if it wasn’t for him she’d still be on the ground covered in mud.

The girl suddenly felt a sharp sensation on her forehead, cutting off her thoughts. She rubbed it as the Gryffindor laughed, smiling widely in response. It was only a couple seconds later that the girl processed what he said just before. “You’re an exception” He said, colouring the Ravenclaw girl’s cheeks a little. It was painfully obvious on her face, but she adjusted her glasses, hoping to cover the reddish tint on her cheeks. For all she knew, the boy was just trying to prevent his friend from getting hurt. But he was willing to face the music of his actions by doing so.

For her.

The girl had to shake the thought away when she felt herself getting too riled up, pulling away at her clothes to distract herself. “Don’t worry, you look great”. Another compliment. It was a small one, said only to reassure her. However, her heart skipped a beat. She wasn’t usually like this, analysing too closely into others’ words. She convinced herself she was just grateful, thus feeling too many emotions at once.

Clearing her throat, Jam began to reply to the boy. “I have no idea! I don’t think I’ve seen him around, let alone done anything to offend him!” The girl huffed in annoyance. “It’s so super strange…” Chewing on her bottom lip, the Ravenclaw asked, “We still have quite some time left before lunch ends, do you want to get a bite?” She smiled, hoping to spend a little more time with her friend before heading off to her next class.

His eyes sparkled and his lips twitched to a smile as he saw her adjust her glasses, obviously nervous. Every single compliment he told her had made her turn red. He never knew he was capable of making someone blush. Why couldn't have used these tricks on Kim when he was younger? He sighed. Maybe it was meant to be like that.

He watched her, with laughing eyes. Then she told him that she did not know anything about him, he chuckled as she assured him that she didn't do anything that would anger that person. He nodded in understanding. "Well.. if that person bothers you again, just tell me. I'll take care of it." he narrowed his eyes, folding his arms. He didn't care if he would injure him, he could beat that guy up if he had to and he wouldn't even care. He raised his eyes, brightening as Jam suggested they go to lunch. Perhaps they would continue with their plans after all. "Perfect!" he beamed, suddenly changing his mood. He only just realised how hungry he was. He could eat a whole plate of pasta! He quickly slipped his hand to Jam's, gripping her soft hand slightly as he guided her gently towards the great hall. "Come on!" He smiled cheerfully as he faced her.
