So there he was. A few hours away from that decisive moment. Augustus couldn’t find the words to describe how he was feeling. So many mixed sentiments were flowing through his head. Definitely anxiety, but also an explicable excitement. What house was he going to be sorted into ? Was he going to make friends ? What were the classes going to be like ?

-All will be well, whispered his father to his ear, while softly putting his hands on Augustus’s shoulders and taking a knee to be at his eye level. Your mother and I are very proud of you, he continued on a benevolent tone. It is the beginning of a great adventure for you. Make sure to enjoy every moment, as they will pass by faster than you’ll ever expect.

He then proceeded to firmly hug his son. The station was buzzing with the noise a thousand goodbyes, as families were wishing farewell to the sons and daughters they were sending away for the school year. The Hogwarts Express was there, in all its splendor. Augustus glanced at his surroundings nervously. Hundreds of children were slowly but surely making their way inside the train, and soon it would be his turn.

It's okay, he thought to himself. You got this. You’re ready.

His mother and grandmother interrupted his daydreaming abruptly by giving him warm embraces a few kisses on the cheeks. Before long, it happened to be his turn to get on board of the famous Hogwarts Express. With a last look behind, Augustus smiled at his family, waved awkwardly and took a first step towards his new life.

- No looking back from now on, he muttered under his breath to himself. This is it.

Augustus then spent the next few minutes wandering the corridor of the train. From outside it seemed a bit smaller, but now that he was inside of it, it seemed to Augustus that the train was never ending. Usually very confident in himself, he felt the smallest he had ever been right at this moment. So many young wizards around him. It was difficult to find a place. He didn’t want to embarrass himself by imposing his presence to an already formed group of friends. Neither did he want to be with older students, as he would most certainly feel ashamed about his humble knowledge of magic. Finally, after passing through a dozen cabin at least, he found one that seemed unoccupied. What a relief he felt at that moment ! Quickly, he sprung on his feet and onto a seat, as if out of fear that someone would just appear there. While sitting down, he laid his head onto the window and observed the multitude of parents waving their last goodbyes. After a few minutes, the train started moving and there he was, with no going back. In a few hours’ time, the Sorting Hat would be sitting upon his head, deciding with which family he would spend the next seven years. The anxiety he felt consuming him at first had now faded away with a sense of excitement. After all, what a great adventure was awaiting !

Minnie bit her lip as she walked into a compartment. She wasn't ready to talk to someone, so she grabbed a book to block out the world. She sat down on a comfy seat and jumped back into the tale of a girl who was the minister of magic. She was startled by the train moving. That was when she realized she had walked into a compartment with someone already in it! Pepper imps! This isn't good. I must seem so rude! I really hope that they weren't expecting anyone! She took a look at who she had rudely sat down with. It looked like a boy about her age, which was a relief. Hopefully she could fix her mistake, and maybe make her first friend! Let's get this right. She thought. The boy was sort of small, like her, and had deep blue eyes. She liked how his hair was messy, as it implied he was energetic. Minnie quite liked people with energy, as they were fun to talk to. "Hello." She said to him nervously. "Sorry I walked in on your compartment, what's your name? I mean-mines Minnie Duke, but I thought since I walked in here with you, why not make the best of it?" She bit her lip again. I hope this goes well.

As the train kept moving, Augustus became more and more at ease. It seemed like the scary part was over. At least for now. Sometimes his mind wondered, and he found himself at the Sorting Ceremony, in front of all those students and his heart started racing again. But he could calm himself quite quickly by focusing on the moment. After all, he was very anxious upon boarding the train and now all was well. It would definitely be the same at the ceremony … right ?

As all of those ideas were coursing through his mind, he decided that it would be wise to find some kind of entertainment, otherwise he’d be overthinking the whole ride. Reaching for his luggage, he took out a book.

- That ought to be interesting, he said out loud, almost as a way to convince himself.

It was A History of Magic, by Bathilda Bagshot. Augustus had always been fascinated by this subject, but at his great despair, he realized he never knew much about the wizarding’s world history. On the other hand, he knew much about muggle history, particularly the Antiquity period. He was very interested in the great time of the Greek City-States warring at each other or the phenomenal conquests of the Roman Republic and the Empire. Even his name, Augustus, was the name of the first Roman Emperor. He couldn’t wait to learn about the magical impact on all those big events that he knew about from a muggle perspective.

But as his started his reading, someone busted open the door to his compartment and took a seat. Before Augustus could react and introduce himself, he noticed that the girl that had entered didn’t even seem to notice him. He wasn’t sure of how that made him feel. A part of him was a bit upset at this complete erasing of his presence, but on another hand, he felt amused and then understanding. From looking at the other person, he figured she seemed the same age as him. Surely a first year. Maybe she was so stressed out, she omitted to look around and thought the compartment was empty. After all, Augustus himself wasn’t very big and noticeable at first. As the girl still didn’t take notice of his presence, he started to observe her in silence, trying to see how long it would take her. She was slim, just like him and had pretty and short blond hair. She was also wearing glasses and that could explain that she didn’t see him at first, if her eyesight wasn’t good.

After a few minutes, Augustus decided he was going to introduce himself. He put his book aside and smiled amusingly as he started to get up. But just then, the young student seemed to be taken out of her trance and finally noticed she wasn’t alone. She quickly saluted him and the apologized, then asked for his name, but then introduced herself. She was talking quite quickly, which might hint that she was nervous. It was okay, Augustus was nervous too. As she finished her introduction, Augustus got up and approached her.

- Hello !, he said in a merry tone. My name is Augustus Faris, nice to meet you Minnie. Don’t be sorry at all, this isn’t my personal compartment, he continued while laughing a little bit. Your company is more than welcome. I assume you’re a first year too ?

As he finished introducing himself, he present his hand at her, expecting her to shake it.

Minnie shook Augustus's hand, relaxing a bit. "I definitely am." She laughed. "I was reading this book when I came in, so I didn't see you there, and I'm glad that I'm welcome here." She smiled and grabbed her book, which she had dropped in surprise.

This is going much better than I thought it would go. He seems nice, and a touch bit lonely like me, too. She thought, and then reprimanded her thinking. Stop noticing too much! People will start to think you're weird. Which you are....but whatever! Minnie shook her head to clear her thoughts. She needed to stop thinking so hard. Mum doesn't like when I tell her things I notice about her, so most likely, neither will he. She looked up at him again and forced a smile back on her face.

"Hey Augustus...can you er...tell me about yourself? You don't have to if you don't want to, but I thought since we're stuck here together we could get to know each other. I'll go first so you can have time to decide." She said to Augustus. Breath Minnie. Don't overwhelm him with fast talking. She thought. Then she took a deep breath. "I grew up in London, in the rural area. I haven't had much contact with other people, so my lack of communication skills is probably due to that. My friend says I have a good sense of humor, and that I have a good attitude too. I love plants and anything book and I really like baking. I want to open a magical bakery when I grow up. I'm a bit mischievous at times, especially to those I don't like, but don't play a prank on me as it won't end well." She smiled a little after she said that, to make sure he understood she was joking. "I love theater and-don't laugh-writing. Like a muggle, but about wizard stuff. I sometimes write about muggles because their so interesting, but I'm not great at it." She blushed. "If you haven't guessed, I'm a pure-blood, and have been watching magic my whole life. Because of that, I love magic and will most likely tell you a fact later on if we become friends. So that's a brief run down of me, can you tell me about you? And if I'm overloading you, please tell me."

After a soft handshake and a brief introduction Augustus had sat back down, now starring at his official first Hogwarts acquaintance. The young blond girl seemed to lose a little bit of her earlier nervosity, which contributed to Augustus’s comfort as well. He also felt reassured when she made it clear that his previous assumption was correct and that she was a first year indeed, just like him. Then, she proceeded to ask the young boy to tell her about himself. As this question caught him off guard, he felt relieved to see her begin by introducing herself in detail. That way, it gave him some time to think about what to say.

So from what he understood, Minnie was from one of the rural areas of London and grew up quite isolated from others. She then proceeded to tell him about her interests, which all seemed fascinating. He definitely shared her love for books for instance. Then, she told him a little bit about her family and her magical background. As a pure blood, she had been in contact with magic from her early age and even promised Augustus to reveal a magical fact to him if they became friends, which triggered a profound sense of curiosity in the young new student. She also loved theater and writing, which Augustus enjoyed too.

- Oh that’s fascinating ! Where exactly in London ? See, I myself am from there. Well, actually, I’m from Algeria, he corrected himself. I was born there and moved to England when I was about four years old. My mother is English and she worked for the Ministry. She met my father during a diplomatic mission she was attributed, he continued. I totally understand your love for books, theater and writing ! I enjoy these myself. As for baking, I love it too, but to be quite frank, I am far from a great cook. I personally prefer eating !, he said as he laughed a little bit. As for the pranks …, he paused for a moment, I can’t guarantee anything ! he exclaimed as he winked at her and laughed. He hoped she had understood he had been joking. If you ever open that bakery, he answered, following the aspiration the she revealed him, please let me know ! It would be my honor to be your first customer. As for my future …, he hesitated for a while, well frankly, I’m not sure at all what I want to do later ! I mostly hope to get through my first week at Hogwarts. After that we will see ! And I can’t wait to become friends then, he blurted to answer her promise of to tell him a magical fact, as he smiled widely at her.

He stopped for a moment and turned his sight to the window. There, he saw fields after fields of green grass and a sky as blue as they come. The scenery pleased him, but he was reminded that after this merry ride, a fatidical moment was awaiting.

- So, are you stressed for the Sorting Ceremony ?, he asked. I for sure am. I have no idea which house I'll be put in. My mother was a Hufflepuff and we look alike, but then again, so do I ressemble my father, and he did not attend Hogwarts. What about you ? Any house expectations ?, he said. Then he fell silent, a bit shy about the fact that he had blurted so many questions at the same time.

Minnie smiled and blushed. I can't believe he called me a friend! This is so amazing! Then she answered his question. "I do have a lot riding on my house actually. I-well my entire family is made up of Slytherins. So I hope to not ruin my families legacy by being in another house, like if I was in Hufflepuff, my family would be ashamed. But they don't care all that much and would love me no matter what, they'd just be a bit shocked."

She looked at the window as her stomach started to get butterflies in it. Why is talking so hard? Especially with him. It suddenly occurred to her that Augustus's blue eyes looked handsome and his hair looked quite cute. Stop that! Augustus is just a friend, not someone to fantasize over! She bit her lip, and continued to talk.

"I would love to give you some of my sweets for free right now! I have created a new sort of sweet, I like to call them Fudge Frogs. Do you want some? And It's so awesome that we have so many of the same interests!" Minnie blushed harder at what she said next. "Maybe....you might want to write a play or something and then act it out or something like that? No need to say yes, just an idea for later. Definitely no need to say yes." She blushed even more. Why can't I talk to him?

He grinned as Minnie explained to him her expectations about the Sorting Ceremony. He didn’t know that much about the Houses, only the basics that everyone knew about. But Slytherin though he had heard a lot of. And not mostly good things. He was not prejudiced and therefore didn’t judge his interlocuter for her desire to join that specific House, but he, for one, had no particular interest in joining Slytherin. From what he heard, a lot of wizards that turned bad were sorted in their youth. However, he understood that she didn’t want to disappoint her family by breaking the tradition.

- Slytherin huh, he said under his breath. Well I do wish for you to get what you want ! But from what I heard, lots of great wizards come from Hufflepuff too ! My mother, for instance, was a Hufflepuff, he continued proudly, as he winked at Minnie to tease her about her previous comment on the concerned House. You shouldn’t be disappointed no matter what the Sorting Hat has in store for you. Personally, I fully trust the old thing to read into my soul, he blurted out while laughing. In all seriousness though, he continued on a more serious tone, my mother told me it never makes a mistake concerning sortings. I’ll be happy with whatever direction he pushes me to.

As he paused for a second, he felt an overwhelming warmth take him over. At that precise moment, he felt confident and good about the future. In a few hours time, he would be starting the most exciting adventure of his life. His fears seemed to fade away as he was speaking with Minnie. Already he had made what seemed to him like a friend, and their conversation about their stress and apprehensions made him secure in knowing for a fact he wasn’t the only one having those doubts. It was probably the case for a lot of new students too. When Minnie offered him her newly made sweets, his eyes widened in amazement.

- Oh I would definitely love to try your Fudge Frogs !, he shouted with excitation. How did you make them ?, he asked. And yes it is !, he pursued, to answer her statement about their shared interests. I’m glad your’e my first Hogwarts friend ! Hopefully the other students are as interesting and kind as you. And sure, after we get our footings in the school, I’m definitely interested in helping you with your plays ! I’ve never been much of an actor, but hey, I need to try at least !, he said while heartily laughing, as he imagined himself performing on a stage in front of an audience.

Minnie giggled. "I'm sure you'd do fine! You've certainly brightened up my day, so I think you could easily brighten up others onstage!" She blushed. I hope that wasn't weird. She thought, and
her cheeks became pink with embarrassment. "So...what class are you most excited about to do?" She grabbed a Fudge Frog from her bag to distract him from her flaming cheeks. "I'm most excited about Astronomy. It sounds so cool!" She finished.

Minnie held out her Fudge Frog to him. "You said you wanted this?" Thankfully, her hair had returned to normal. "It's free, don't worry. And it's not poised either." She smiled to let him know she was joking. "And thanks for calling me kind and interesting! You're really nice." And good looking. Her mind added. "I'm so lucky to have stumbled upon your compartment!" And she really was grateful for his acceptance to her. Not many people were. Now Minnie was with someone who was nice and cute and generally quite wonderful from what she'd seen. This was a good train ride. "So Augustus....do you want to hear that fun fact? Since we're friends and I know a lot of fun facts...would you be interested much?"

Both younglings were having a hearty laugh as Minnie proceeded to reaffirm her trust in Augustus’s potential skills as an actor. She then asked the young boy what class he was mostly looking forward to as she took out a Fudge Frog from her bag and handed it to Augustus. In the meantime, she shared that she was really looking forward to astrology, which seemed like a very good answer to Augustus. Throughout his youth, he had always been fascinated by the cosmos and its secrets, especially during his summer trips to Algeria, where he would travel south with his father, to the more desertic regions of the country. He would then spend hours at a time during the night, scouting the clear and magnificent night sky.

- Oh that’s a good question, he said as he got lost in his thoughts for a second, trying to figure out how to respond. I mean, to be honest, I’m pretty much excited for all of them ! But if I really had to choose, he continued, I guess it would be between Charms, Flying and Astronomy as well ! Charms simply because, I think at least, it’s the most magical subject ?, he pursed, kind of unsure about his own answer. I mean, I can’t think of a more “pure” form of magical learning than actually … he hesitated for a moment, … learning spells ? he blurted out hesitantly. I don’t know if I make sense here, he followed while laughing nervously. Then flying because I really want to be able to be good on a broom ! I only had the chance to ride one once, with my father and it was amazing to feel like a bird, even if it wasn’t for long ! And astronomy because the sky, stars and just the cosmos in general have always fascinated me ! I see it as this huge entity, full of secrets that we aren’t really capable of understanding and that triggers my curiosity insanely, he ended up saying. He wasn’t sure of those answers himself, as he really never had put much thought into the question before. He mostly saw, until then, the Hogwarts experience as a whole, but Minnie had opened in him an interesting train of thought in the young Augustus. It’s true that he would prefer some subjects to others. Maybe he wouldn’t even dislike some !

- Oh waw that’s amazing !, he told Minnie as he took a bite of the Fudge Frog. He wasn’t lying, as they were truly delicious. Augustus wasn’t much of a sweet tooth, but he had a weakness for anything chocolate and these pastries were definitely hitting the spot. To be honest, I’m not much into desserts, he decided to share, but I really do have a weakness for chocolate. These are really good, thank you so much !, he said between two bites, as he kept devouring the gift his new friend had made him. He definitely liked Minnie already. I’m the lucky one !, he replied in an excited tone to Minnie’s comment about her luck for tumbling into his compartment, as he held out the treat she had given him with a huge satisfied smile. And yes I’m ready !, he answered to her proposal about revealing the previously mentioned fun fact concerning magic. All excited, Augustus stared eagerly at Minnie, awaiting the revelation.

My Outfit

"Well, my fact is slightly...boring? So if you want a more exciting one....please tell me?" Minnie sounded unsure. I'm so surprised he wanted a fact! I hope I don't disappoint him. She bit her lip, a nervous habit of hers. "So....how about I tell you three facts. One that is slightly boring, one that is really cool, and one about...um....spells?" She blushed, not sure what she was thinking. Let's wow him Minnie. She told herself, and took a deep breath.

"So...the first fact is about Hogwarts itself. Hogwarts was founded around the TENTH CENTURY! That's like, l,000 years ago!" She paused for effect, then continued. "My next-not so boring-fact is about this one really old wizard. Okay, so this wizard named Barry Wee Willie Winkle was the oldest wizard in history, living to the age of 755! Once he reached that age, he had a massive party with 30 million people! If that isn't cool, I don't know what is." She smiled, getting in her fact zone. "The last fact is about..." She stopped, a bit unsure. "This one's a bit dark. So....the most powerful spell ever is the......Killing Curse. Although a close second is Protego." She added more brightly. "I-if you want something else...then just tell me?"

I don't break the rules, I expand them for my need.
