Old Habits Die Hard
Arriving at Hogwarts had been a rather confusing time for Erin, life here seemed to entail good manners and proper etiquette...great. It hadn't all been bad though, so far she hadn't met anyone who had disliked her for being a muggle-born, but then again she hadn't interacted with a Slytherin yet. It was probably for the best that she stayed far away from Slytherin house, considering she basically insulted them during the sorting ceremony. She didn't really mean to say what she said but years of living in Cork had caused her to shoot off at the mouth. But if there was one thing that she was excited about, it would have to be the astounding amount of brits all over the place!
A lot of Irish view Cork as the "Rebel County", and therefore harbor a sort of resentment towards Corkonians. Not to mention their accent is near-impossible to understand at times and the general attitude that they have is off-putting. This means that its basically a no-fly zone for the proper British, or at least that's what Erin thought. Her accent was a little easier to understand at least, her mother not wanting her to copy her fathers accent. But unfortunately she was probably still hard to understand if you had just met her.
Erin had tried to remain in her dorm, but she was never asleep this early at night. She decided that tonight was going to be one of Irish hijinks, complete with a bottle of strong coffee. Luckily Erin had swiped a bottle when she was walking through the 'Leaky Cauldron', hopefully it was as good as the stuff made in Ireland. Her tiny frame allowed her to weave in and out of small corridors and hide from the occasional teacher or prefect. Finally, Erin had reached the front doors and stealthily maneuvered out of the building.
The cold, crisp air of night had always comforted Erin no matter where she was, it was practically like home turned into a breathable substance. As Erin examined the grounds, she noticed a rather large tree with an extended branch at just her height. She took a couple swigs of the coffee as she grinned at the tree, Erin had an idea...a bad one. Her feet moved adamantly across the grass, leaves and grass crunching under her powerful steps. Before her master plan begun she would need a little more liquid courage.
Erin took a long gulp of the coffee and placed it in her shirt, once she was done there would be more time for drinking. With a hop, Erin would grab onto the branch that extended out of the tree, so far so good. She pulled herself onto the branch and looked upwards, she still had a long way to go. One foot after the other, one hand then to the other, Erin had climbed trees many times before so these steps had become engrained into her mind. After two minutes of climbing Erin looked up once more, a few more branches and she will have reached the top.
The Guinness had started to settle inside of her, the strain on her arms being numbed, allowing her to climb faster and faster. With one final pull she stood at the top of the tree...the view was simply astounding. The way Hogwarts was shining under the moonlight, how the trees looked when darkness envelops the ground below, and how the leaves smell as they sway against the wind, they all blended together to create a truly beautiful sensation. "Well would ya have a deko at that...this view is massive, like." But as she took another sip out of the bottle, a loud snapping would be heard from beneath her.
The branch that she sat on gave way, probably not being used to having any amount of weight on it. As Erin fell through the air she let out a loud, confused scream, the wind against her face now turning into a tornado. Right before she hit the ground below, her pant leg got caught on the first branch she had climbed on. Now she was hanging upside down, probably looking like a monkey in an exhibit. The bottle of coffee that she had, fell in front of her face and smashed onto the ground, glass and coffee exploding in all directions on the ground.
"Well this went totally arseways didn't it?"Erin mumbled as she shook her leg in an attempt to free herself from the branch, no dice. She had come to the realization that she was stuck like this until someone freed her. With a defeated sigh, Erin stopped struggling and just hung there, stiff as a board. If a teacher or prefect found her then she was in big trouble, but maybe a helpful student might come along? She didn't know what exactly would happen, but Erin just hoped that they came soon.

Old Habits Die Hard
Chloe made her way down to the grounds. She wasn't able to sleep, as much as she wanted to, so she decided to go for a walk through the grounds. It would be quiet. Chloe was hoping to hear the sounds of insects chirping in the woods and the distant sound of waves from the Great Lake. She wrapped her jacket around her. She got cold very easily, just from the wind blowing. Her long dark hair blew behind her as she walked. She thought about her time thus far at Hogwarts. She hadn't made many friends. She had met several people but they all seemed to not talk to her after a little bit. She wanted to go back home, back to Ireland. She missed her mum and dad, but they hadn't replied to any of the owls she had sent them. The young Hufflepuff girl was sad and lonely, and walking through the trees and grass was as close to being home as she could get right now.
As Chloe reached the grounds, she stopped and frowned. She saw something in the distance. It looked like something stuck on a tree. It was hard to tell what exactly it was, because it was so dark, especially at a distance. As Chloe got closer, she gripped her wand inside her robe, just in case it was a dangerous creature.
"Hello?" She whispered. She couldn't decide if she was wanting to hear something reply or not. She took a deep breath as she kept slowly taking steps, bracing herself for whatever she might run into at the tree. She wasn't brave enough for this. She wasn't put in Gryffindor like her parents, she was a Hufflepuff. She wasn't the confrontational type, unless it was someone egging her on.

Erin had been hanging from the tree for sometime, blood rushing to her head and causing her face to turn red. The coffee under her had started to be soaked in by the stone floor, the scent of java slowly dissipating with it. If she wasn't careful when she got down, the glass on the floor would probably cut her up and cause her to have to go to the nurse. She absolutely hated hospitals, the thought of having to go to the infirmary slowly filling her mind with dread and anxiety. As more time wore on Erin had started to curse herself for having such a stupid idea, she would take relative boredom over this any day.
The cold breeze along her face had slightly reduced the nausea that she had started to feel in her stomach. If only she knew a time rewinding spell she could stop herself from doing this, do time rewinding spells even exist? She didn't know, and honestly she couldn't be arsed by it at the moment. Erin closed her eyes to ward off the nausea In her stomach, but it was only a temporary fix. If she yelled out for help it would most likely lead to a teacher catching her instead of a student.
Suddenly, a voice called out from the darkness surrounding the outside of the school. It was low and soft, but Erin could definitely make out what it said. The voice said "Hello?", like it was trying to confirm if anyone was there. From the volume and tone, Erin could tell that the voice most likely belonged to a girl around her age. Her eyes bolted open as the voice registered in her brain, could this be her ticket out of this mess.
"Hello! Is anybody there? I got stuck in this darn tree trying to wax a gaza. Can ya give me the binoo if you can help me?"She sounded more helpless than she would've liked, but this was a dire situation. She tried to squint her eyes to see if she could make out any figures in the dark, but to no avail. Who was this mystery person?

As Chloe got closer, she realized it was another student in the tree. She laughed a little bit, relaxing her grip on her wand. She didn't really know any spells, so she wasn't sure what she was going to do if it was something dangerous in the tree. She heard the student reply. "Hello! Is anybody there? I got stuck in this darn tree trying to wax a gaza. Can ya give me the binoo if you can help me?"
Chloe frowned, trying to understand what the girl said before deciding the girl was probably just climbing in the tree and got stuck. She chuckled just a little bit louder than she meant to.
"I'll come try to save you." She laughed again, stepping close enough that she could see the girl. The girl was hanging upside down, her short red hair hanging around her face. Her face was red from hanging upside down so long. Chloe put her wand back into her robes and reached forward towards the girl, trying to push her up so she could grab the tree to catch herself from falling.
"I've never had to save someone from a tree, so I'm trying here." Chloe grunted as she pushed the girl up.

Her call was answered, maybe by some kind of luck magic that came with attending Hogwarts, or perhaps a mystical being had heard her cry for help. From the seemingly infinite darkness came a girl, but not just any girl, it was a student...or at least that's what she looked like. The girl neared Erin very slowly at first, seemingly afraid that she might be something more scary than a drunk Irish person, does that exist?. But then laughter escaped the approaching girl's mouth, Erin couldn't really blame her, if she saw a student hanging by their foot from a tree, she would've been in complete hysterics. She wondered what house the girl was from, if it was Slytherin then she would have much bigger problems than being stuck in a tree.
"I'll come try to save you"
Erin heard the girl say, before laughter filled the quiet night air again, she must've been getting a real kick out of this. "Thanks lassie, just help push me up and we should be away for the slates". She said as the girl put the wand away and started to reach towards her. It seemed that the student in front of her was way ahead of her, as she felt the girl push upwards onto her back. Erin could tell the girl was Irish by the way she spoke, but the accent didn't sound like she was from Dublin or Cork.
She couldn't really make out the girls appearance, the darkness and fact that she was currently upside down hindering her eyesight. But Erin could make out long dark hair and a face that belonged to a girl around her own age. Since the girl was helping Erin and not blackmailing her, she assumed that the student wasn't from Slytherin, unless she had the wrong idea about them. The only other two houses that came to mind were Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, considering that students from Ravenclaw probably had their faces buried into a textbook at the time. But she had been to the Gryffindor table and didn't see anybody that fit this girls description, so Hufflepuff seemed like the right answer.
"Ive never had to save someone from a tree, so I'm trying here"
Erin heard the girl state, a small chuckle escaping Erin's throat. With the extra leverage that the girl provided, Erin grabbed onto a nearby branch and tore her leg from the branch it was stuck on. Her pant leg was now torn, along with part of her black robe. Luckily she had bought three of them so it wasn't too big of a loss. Finally freed, Erin landed back on the ground with a thud, her shoes breaking the glass beneath them.
Erin would quickly shake her head to get any leaves and bark out of her hair, and then dust her robe off with her slightly irritated hand. With a sigh of relief, Erin would look to the girl who had just saved her from certain doom. She would flash a big, goofy smile and extend her hand out to her savior. "Thank you lassie, good thing you're not bareas. The name's Erin by the way, I'll find a way to pay ya back, I swear." She would use her free hand to cross her heart, it was a bit childish but Erin thought it was appropriate for the situation. Who was this girl? And what was she doing out this late?

Chloe watched as the girl brushed herself off. She studied the girl's robes, trying to decide what house she might be in. "Thank you lassie, good thing you're not bareas. The name's Erin by the way, I'll find a way to pay ya back, I swear." Chloe smiled at the girl, Erin.
"I'm Chloe. It's a pleasure." Chloe smiled warmly at the girl and glanced around. "So what are you doing out this late? It's super dark outside." Chloe laughed again, hoping that she wasn't showing that she was slightly scared of the dark. "And why were you stuck in the tree exactly?" Chloe asked awkwardly. She knew the girl had told her, but she spoke in a different accent. She could tell Erin was Irish, but from what part? She wasn't from Belfast or anywhere near it.
As she studied Erin, she decided she must be Gryffindor. They were the only ones that were brave enough to go out and climb trees late at night in the dark. Chloe adjusted her jacket, pulling it back around her arms tightly. She listened for any other sound that there might be other students outside, but it was only the pair beside the tree.

Old Habits Die Hard
Chloe, the name of the girl who had saved her life. Erin had never been saved by anyone before, usually she had to save some poor kid from being beaten up by a gang of hoodlums. Being in this spot was a very confusing feeling, for the first time in her life she was at a loss for words. Was she supposed to thank her profusely or give her a gift? These thoughts raced through Erin's mind as Chloe started to speak, Erin trying to keep her confusion from showing on her face.
The words exited her mouth at a volume unknown to Erin, the sound carrying a heavy tone of embarrassment. What a first impression to give to someone, now she probably looked like a careless alcoholic. In that moment Erin looked down at the ground, disappointed in what she had done that night. Maybe it was the night sky, maybe it was the coffee, or maybe it was just a result of her bottling her emotions since she arrived at Hogwarts. But for the first time in a long time, Erin had felt ashamed.
Did Erin answer this question with truth, or should she weave a lie? Lying is an art that she had mastered over her 11 years of life, but this didn't seem like the right time to do it. Erin scratched the back of her head anxiously, she wasn't sure how Chloe would react to hearing about her drunken escapades. But she owed the truth to her savior, it was the least that she could do. "Well...I came out here to grab a bottle o' REALLY strong coffee, but you can see how that turned out.""So what are you doing out this late? It's super dark outside?"

Erin winced at the question, it was just the question that she didn't want to hear. But her sense of loyalty to this new person forced her to tell the truth. "I...got a little langered and decided to climb to try and climb the tree. It went good for a lil' bit, but then I fell. If it weren't for that branch I probably would've been smashed onto the concrete." That was a fact that Erin didn't want to think about, she could've died in those moments. But her lucky streak seemed to have continued that night, and for that she was thankful."And why were you stuck in the tree exactly?"

Chloe laughed, not realizing that the girl was uncomfortable with her answers. She found Erin interesting though, so she wanted to keep talking to her. "Well...I came out here to grab a bottle o' Guinness, but you can see how that turned out." She chuckled a little bit as she learned the girl had been drinking. "You came out here to drink? Sounds like you had a fun night. I'm glad I got here when you did, and you're okay." Chloe smiled warmly at Erin. She wanted to show the girl that she wasn't going to think anything weird about her coming outside to drink.
"Where did you get Guiness? I'll need some to gain the courage to explore the Forbidden Forest eventually. Why is it Forbidden?" Chloe was halfway joking, half serious. She was wanting to explore the forest, and definitely needed the courage. Maybe she could talk Erin into exploring with her. The girl seemed brave, and nice enough.
She didn't want Erin to be in debt to her, but she had told her she would repay her. Maybe that could be how she would repay her for saving her. Maybe she WOULD talk the girl into exploring somewhere with her. She was excited.

Erin was relieved to find that Chloe didn't seem to mind the fact that she was drinking, in fact she took it pretty lightly. Her shame was soon blown away by the cool night winds, and replaced by her usual carefree happiness. She looked up from the ground and back at Chloe, her signature smile now plastered back onto her face. She had said something about Erin having a fun night, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Her night had been, for the most part, a miserable mix of fear and dread.
"I hobbled the coffee off some bartender at the Leaky Cauldron, but I dropped while I was falling from that darn tree." She looked back at the tree and frowned, now she had to add that tree to her list of things to beat up. Nature was definitely a force to be reckoned with, and one that she wasn't planning on testing again. "But that's biscuits to a bear. What's the Forbidden Forest? Is it cool? Dangerous?" Erin would ask, her eyes glowing with a fiery passion. She loved adventure more than she loved her own mother, and adventures were even better at night. Maybe the night didn't have to end with the bottle of coffee, maybe her night was only just beginning.
Erin chuckled at the girls inquiries, impressed that she wanted coffee that strong or to explore this "Forbidden Forest" she spoke of. She'd never heard of the Forbidden Forest, she only knew what Hogwarts was a month before she came to the school. But the name... it invoked a certain eeriness that Erin couldn't shake. Now she wanted to know more about this forest and why it intrigued Chloe so much. If it were anything like Erin was thinking, it was full of deadly monsters and amazing treehouses."Where did you get coffee that strong? I'll need some to gain the courage to explore the Forbidden Forest eventually. Why is it Forbidden?"

Chloe looked in the general direction of the forest. She could almost see it in the darkness. She pointed at the outline of the forest in the distance. "There's the Forbidden Forest. Students aren't supposed to go there without a professor with them. I want to explore it, but I'm terrified to at the same time." Chloe laughed nervously, looking back at the red-headed girl in front of her.
"I've heard its dangerous. Why else would it be the FORBIDDEN Forest?" Chloe laughed at her own joke. "I came out here just for a walk, but eventually I'm wanting to get the courage to explore in there..." She smiled to herself as she noticed that Erin looked excited to explore. She looked like a girl who would love to have an adventure and break the rules. "I'm just worried we're going to get killed... or worse, expelled."
Chloe was nervous about breaking the rules. She never did stuff like that. She was typically a quiet, timid girl, but she was excited to try something new and different, and a little frightening.

I'm so sorry about that. I couldn't help myself. I just had a Harry Potter marathon recently. That seemed like the perfect opportunity to say that.
