10/5/23 after lunch

𝓘t was a good day so far for autumn. Warm weather and sunny. Linda looked around and decided to go to her room to take her sketchbook and go out to draw.

Drawing was always one of her favorite hobbies, even after receiving bad news about her best friend. She already finished some sketchbooks and not that far ago she started to draw people. It took some effort and some mistakes to be fixed, but now finally she could do it nicely.

Coming back to her room after lunch, Linda quickly found everything she needed and changed her clothes. It was autumn time so she left her red hair in a simple high ponytail with a flower in it to hold them.

𝓞nce she was prepared, she went out of the room and went to search for a place with less people. After all Linda intended to draw, not to talk with others and pretend to be happy. However, it wasn't that easy to find less crowded place, so this is how she found herself close to the Great Lake.

Linda looked around and found nice place to sit in. After putting carefully her drawing supplies close to her, she opened her sketchbook on a new page. It had some students' portraits in it and now she was going to draw herself sitting in front of the lake. Surely, it would be more interesting to see from someone else, but for now she could definitely do it herself.

𝓛inda took pencil and started to make a sketch. It took her some time to finish her silhouette. When it was done, she sketched the lake, so it looked like the girl was sitting in front of it, looking thoughtfully far away.

When it was all done, she took colored pencils and started to bring colors and shadows in this sketch. That's when she seemed to hear someone's steps.

It was Thursday, October 5^th, 2023.

The sky was clear and sunny and the weather was warm for once. Everything pointed towards happiness.

But Kim was not feeling the lovely weather. He wasn't feeling much of anything, these days. The poor boy thought he was cursed with good reason. Everything that had happened to him since the Fall Ball 2022 had only served to further confirm these impressions. The dark haired teen was just drifting with no apparent purpose in mind as he went to classes, did homework, prepared for clubs, ran said clubs, and every now and then did something on his own. Kim rarely interacted with people these days and preferred to remain alone.

Distancing himself from those who knew him wasn't hard because most of them had disappeared, transferred or had already drifted away from him. He'd always been someone who liked to be alone. But this was taking things to extremes. Kim had become a loner and was drifting even further away from everyone. If things continued like this, he might even become a ghost and join the Fat Lady and the others. At least @Draven Mirador had returned to him. A blast from the past. Someone Kim thought he'd never see again....

He was a shining ray of light in the darkness.

But it wasn't enough to knock him back to his senses. Only Sophia, Felix or Puffie could do that for him.

Preferably all of the above. But one was not possible anymore. And the other two were highly unlikely to happen, as he didn't know what had happened to either one of them. They'd lost contact with eachother and Kim had suffered as a result of this. Regardless, he didn't want to think anymore about this. Closing his eyes, he shook his head to banish such thoughts, and looked around him to find himself outside. Ah, the Great Lake again. He'd been out there countless times. It was a great spot to sketch, paint, and write song lyrics.

...and save people from drowning, which was something he'd recently become known for. Kim wasn't sure what the reason was but students seemed to try and swim in the Great Lake whenever he found himself there. Which in turn made him want to save them. Because although he wouldn't usually go out of his way to save someone, if they were floundering around in front of him, he couldn't not go save them. Kim couldn't help himself and looked over at the waters, hoping no one would be there this time. Please don't be there.

Kim's unspoken prayers were answered.

This time, there was no one out there breaking the rules and swimming in the Great Lake this time around.

Kim couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief at this. But he did happen to catch a glimpse of someone sitting by the surface of the water. Thankfully, she didn't look like she wanted to go into the water. It was a girl and she looked as if she were sketching or drawing something, much like he tended to do. Kim was carrying his satchel, the strap slung over one shoulder, and was dressed in a dark denim jacket, sunglasses, earrings and a few bead bracelets wrapped around his left wrist. He couldn't help but pause, a few feet away from the girl.

It was almost as if he wanted to come over. But at the same time, didn't want to. Kim let his blue eyes linger on her for a few seconds and then abruptly turned away and started to walk off again.

𝓐lthough the weather was suggesting a great happy day, Linda wasn't feeling happy. After all it's been just some days after getting news about her bestie's death.

Linda made herself stop her thoughts focusing on the view in front of her and sketch that now was getting colored. After hearing steps her first thought was that she will have to pretend that she was happy. However, when she turned around, she noticed Kim.

𝑰n this case, she didn't need to look happy. She felt like she could be herself from the first time they met. So, it was okay now. Hi Kim. Are you going to draw too? She called after him.

For a second Linda realized how emotionless her voice sounded. However, it didn't matter now. She was okay with the idea of Kim sitting somewhere here and drawing or doing anything else. They weren't close to each other so they didn't need to put an effort to talk much.

However, maybe this could help a bit? Even if they would stay silent, it could help to feel a bit better. Not so lonely... She looked up to glance at him again to see what he will do after hearing her calling. Linda thought Kim wasn't happy either and it didn't have to do anything with her sitting here earlier than he came.

𝑺he noticed in the beginning of September... No, she didn't want to go there yet. Linda didn't want to think now. It was too painful. She looked at the sky hiding the tear that came out of her eyes. Linda didn't want to cry.

Linda sat like that for some seconds with closed eyes and then returned to her sketch. Surely, would it be any other time when she would be happier she'd pay more attention to Kim and maybe be even more talkative, but this wasn't going to happen now.

It was almost like fate.

As soon as he turned away from the girl, she looked over at him. It was funny how things like that happened.

The girl called out to him but instead of it being a simple greeting from a stranger, she used his name. Kim blinked, coming to a halt, and looked back over his shoulder at the owner of the voice. It took a few seconds for him to make the connection but it was made. Linda. Linda Ramirez if he remembered correctly, they'd first met up inside their shared common room. He'd seen her around here and there since then but they hadn't really spoken or hung out much. Still, he did remember her and recalled she liked to draw like he did.

Linda's voice sounded emotionless, just as his probably did these days, but Kim wasn't particularly bothered by this. It wasn't his business and if she didn't want to talk about it, he wouldn't pressure her. After all, he was pretty much in the same boat and didn't want people inquiring about him either. He thought about her question and shrugged his shoulders. "...not really. I just found myself here for some reason." Kim said, responding to her earlier question. "I'll probably end up doing some homework before afternoon classes." He told her and let his blue eyes flicker over her for a moment. "Are you drawing?"

Kim asked, nodding at her sketchbook.

From the way she was behaving, it seemed as if she wouldn't mind some company, but the boy hesitated.

Did he really want to stay with someone now? Kim didn't tend to seek out company like others tended to do when they were lonely, he preferred being alone. But at the same time, Sophia had corrupted him.

She made him actually long for company, when before he hadn't ever felt that way. Eh, maybe the correct term was that he'd only rarely felt that way back in the past. A sigh escaped his lips and he closed the short distance between the two to take a seat on the ground, near Linda, setting his satchel down beside him. Not close enough for them to touch but not far enough that they wouldn't be able to hear eachother should they choose to speak. Kim didn't speak any further words, he was content to remain in some comfortable silence.

That is, unless Linda decided she wanted to extend the conversation. But Kim had never been a fan of small talk, he didn't like it as it felt too fake for him. It was the sort of conversation you held when you wanted to be polite but weren't at all interested in how the person would respond to your words. Pureblood type of conversation at fancy events and balls. Transfiguration was his next class after lunch break, which was his worst subject but lately he'd been getting a little better at it. He supposed practice really does makes perfect.

Go figure.

Kim reached into his satchel and drew out his Transfiguration book, along with an inkwell and quill.

He reached in a 2nd time and took out his notebook, setting it down beside him. Reaching in again, he took out some parchment paper and placed it between the pages of the notebook. Picking up his Transfiguration book, he opened it to the chapter he needed to do homework on and started to read. Even though he was with Linda, the atmosphere was calm and soothing and the weather was actually pretty nice too. It was the perfect time to be outside. He still had some time before Transfiguration took place and could study for a bit.

𝓘t's a girl sitting in front of the lake looking far away. I started to add people in my drawings, but don't know if it's good. Linda replied to Kim's question. Although the last part was supposed some actual care, but she said it in the same emotionless voice.

She noticed him sitting not far from her and recognized Transfiguration. That was quite nice subject, one of her favorite. Would this be any other time, she'd be more interested in homework she'd likely have next year. Is it easier to be some animal... I wonder if it hurts the same. She whispered sadly, mostly to herself.

𝓛inda moved stretched her legs for a second and looked at the sky. She didn't notice that a piece of paper from that letter fell from her sketchbook.

Dear Linda,

As you probably noticed, Amaris didn't return to Hogwarts this year. Probably, you were wondering what happened. Unfortunately, due to an accident, she died...

𝓛inda looked back at the lake and felt calm. She didn't feel it necessary to fill the silence with attempting to small talk and it seemed like Kim didn't mind it either. Did it hurt less for animals to have someone dear to them die? She didn't have the answer.

Interesting enough that even in her current mood, she still somehow managed to do all her homework the moment she got it. Or was it that unusual? It was the way to keep thoughts away. Maybe there will be a day she'll have just good memories without this unbearable pain. Linda didn't know. But there was something she knew for sure: she will never forget her best friend.

Kim nodded at her words.

The girl's description of what her drawing was sounded nice. Kim couldn't help but wonder how she drew.

Such as, did she draw the person first and sketch the background afterward? Or did she do the background first and add the people later? Kim tended to do the latter, as he found it easier to do landscapes and took more time when it came to people, wanting them to be a perfect likeness of themselves. But these thoughts remained locked inside his head, as he never vocally asked Linda. If they started up a conversation about drawing and sketching, he might have asked the girl. But as it was, neither seemed to want to talk much now.

As time passed, Kim closed his book momentarily and tilted his head to either side, easing out the kinks built up inside his neck. It was around this time that he noticed a piece of paper that had fallen from Linda's sketchbook. Unfortunately for Linda, it had fallen directly next to Kim. If it had simply fallen out of her book and remained by her side, he wouldn't have really noticed. But as it was literally right next to him, it was kind of hard not to look at it. It also wasn't in an envelope, so the contents of the note were laid bare for him.

It was a shame Linda was going through such a time.

Kim briefly wondered if he had brought this upon her. But then decided against blaming himself for this.

The fourteen year old didn't really know her well, so it was unlikely Linda's bad luck was because of him. He hadn't even spent much time with her either, so his curse couldn't have rubbed off on her. Kim pondered for a moment, not sure what to do. If this had been before the curse had consumed his life, he might have tried to cheer her up a bit. But as it was, he didn't really feel cheerful himself, so that would be hard to do. After a few seconds, Kim decided to subtly place the note closer to Linda. Hopefully, without her seeing him do this.

Kim stifled a yawn and raised his arms to stretch a bit, closing his eyes momentarily as he thought about how to go about this. Once Linda was paying attention to her drawing, the dark haired teen quickly picked up the note and placed it closer to Linda. Returning to his studies again, Kim started to scratch out some answers with his quill on a piece of parchment paper. Transfiguration was hard for him. Not the spells but the actual assigned homework. He had no problem doing the Transfiguration spells both in and out of class.

But describing things in homework format was difficult for him for some reason. He wasn't sure why. Eventually, Kim finished up his Transfiguration homework and closed his book with a sigh of relief. Done. The teen's hardest subject to do homework in was finally done! He glanced over at Linda for a moment, wondering if she had finished with her piece of artwork. Kim hadn't yet eaten but he hadn't been in the mood to eat for the longest time. Some people thought he could be starving himself but that wasn't the case.

He just never felt like doing much of anything these days.

"How's your drawing coming along?" Kim asked. "Do you have classes later this afternoon?"

Kim had them and was going to use that as an excuse to leave her now. After all, since he'd finished his Transfiguration homework, there wasn't enough time left to tackle another subject before classes resumed.

𝓛inda was in the middle of returning her eyes on her notebook when she noticed Kim putting a paper closer to her. She took it, thinking why she even left it in her sketchbook and quietly whispered: Thank you.

𝓘t was a thank you for a lot of things at the same time and the most important one was thank you for not asking anything. This was the best what could be done now, simply not needing to talk about it. Linda guessed that Kim was going through something hard too so maybe he understood personally that some things were better staying without being forced to talk about.

I finished my drawing. You can take a look at it and other drawings in this sketchbook. Perhaps you could see something in it I could improve, though all of them are already looking quite realistic. Linda said with looking at Kim and showing him her opened sketchbook so he could see if he wanted to.

𝓨ou know, there're things we will never forget about, carrying them through all our life, but even if it hurts to remember sometimes, I want to have more memories. I wish to carry them all and never forget because this will be the only thing I have as a proof that they existed. Sometimes we might think we have bad luck, but I don't think so. Everyone has there own story they face, but it surely doesn't make us bad. Linda smiled slightly looking directly at Kim's eyes. It's okay if you don't understand what I said. But what me forever remember that person and learn to live with it. And with a small pause Linda thought about one more question from Kim she didn't answer yet. I suppose I have. We can go to castle together if your class is inside. Thank you for staying.

It wasn't that Kim had procrastinated with his homework.

Back in the past, he'd done it immediately after getting it because it gave him the most amount of time.

If he didn't understand it, he'd have that much more time to figure it out in the end. And if he managed to get it done early, it meant he had more time for other homework or projects. Or some free time. Of course, his free time wasn't really that free as Kim had various club itineraries to plan and his daily visits to the greenhouse. The teen tended to be quite a busy fourteen year old, although this tended to be by choice. But nowadays, things were different, he felt more uncertain and sometimes felt as if he had no purpose anymore.

The only thing that had really kept him sane since the Fall Ball of 2022 had been Puffie. But now, even Puffie was gone. It was slowly getting harder to pretend everything was fine with people. Kim felt as if he was being worn down little by little, until there was going to be nothing left of him. The dark haired teen's eyes flickered over in Linda's direction as she whispered a few words of thanks. There was no need to give any kind of response and so he just nodded ever so slightly. As she spoke of her drawings, Kim leaned over a bit.

He took a look at the artwork.

"The landscape looks good to me. You might want to add a bit more color here and less color here to make it look more realistic. As for the girl, it looks like you have the basics down. I'd recommend adding more detail to the legs and hands here but you've got the body down well." Kim told her, giving his impressions. As Linda spoke again, the fourteen year old stiffened a little. Linda's situation was decidedly different from his and Kim didn't want to talk about it. Not at the moment.

She didn't understand that he was cursed and that was the reason behind everything falling apart around him. The curse might not have been at its fullest right now but if people stuck around him too long, they would be privy to his curse too. Thankfully, Linda answered one of his previous questions, changing the topic and Kim nodded. "I have Transfiguration. You?" He asked, gathering his things together again. Once he was done, he'd head off towards the castle, pausing to let Linda catch up, and then would walk off.
