Great Idea, Right? Part 2
Reducio

18 December 2023
Colin had been fidgety all day. More fidgety than was usual anyway, seeing as it was almost Christmas holiday! But today was different. Colin had made a plan for after school, and that plan involved a certain cute Ravenclaw girl --- Clair Fernandez! It was actually her plan, but today would be Colin's contribution to it!
He'd rehearsed everything in his head during potions, which was probably why his cauldron overflowed and melted all over the soapstone table causing several classmates to raise an alarm with the professor who had to clear the mess. He revised all the pertinent fact during history of magic, which earned him an embarrassing five minutes of questioning and uncomfortable stares and laughs from the class as apparently "Clair Fernandez" was not the correct answer to whatever goblin war it was they were supposed to be studying today!
All in all, the eighteenth of December would not be noted as Colin McCoire's finest academic hour! But! There would always be tomorrow to make up for it!
And at last the day was officially over with! Colin had already shoved his books and quills and notebooks back into his satchel well before the class was dismissed. All that remained was to wade through the sea of classmates eager to escape the classroom and find his girlfriend and make their hasty get-away from the castle!
Colin had a pretty good idea where Clair would be about this time. Heading straight for the library! How fortunate for both of them he was becoming a pretty good tracker! He could find his mates Luci and Rebecca without any problem. Avery too. He'd been getting better with Clair too! As he loped along the corridors, his nose took the lead and his bare feet navigated the varying stone, brick and wood floors of Hogwarts with ease.
And there she was, just ahead!
Colin made his way smoothly to the other side of the corridor, catching up to Clair just before she made the turn to head off to the library. He slipped his right hand into her left. "Clair!" he said softly. "Come on! We need to talk! Hurry!" And with that, he led his sweetheart outside into the chill air. And Colin ran! Hand in hand with Clair and all the way up to the stone outcropping in the high meadows above the castle.
"Surely this is the most beautiful place in all of Hogwarts!" Colin said exuberantly once they arrived. They could look down and see all of Hogwarts spread below them --- the castle, the gardens, the wide lake, the forest beyond. Colin let out a huge breath. He'd practiced all weekend for this moment. He reckoned today would be one of the most important days in his entire life --- in both their lives!
Colin turned to look Clair in her eyes. This was going to be perfect! His heart pounded and he bit his lower lip. It was time! He held her hands.
"Clair! I want to do it with you!" he said firmly.
Colin blinked. Wait.
Colin's brain reviewed what just happened.
"I mean!"
Yes. Colin forgot to say something very important!
And now everything was falling apart!
"Um!"
Colin groaned inwardly. Clair was going think Colin was so stupid!
"The thing! The ... er ... the binding mark!" At last he got it out straight! "I studied it and everything. But, well, how do we actually do it?" Colin eagerly waited to hear what Clair would say.

Great Idea, Right? Part 2
A certain Clair Fernandez had had a tolerable day, her classes had gone well and she only needed to write two essays for her homework. One of those essays required her going to the library to get some reliable information. Clair had been heading there when a certain snake stopped her, By the urgency in his voice she assumed her boyfriend had something important to say, but she knew that it would come out on its own without her asking.
The Ravenclaw ran with him, about a half foot behind the boys long strides, she wondered what he had planned, was this a surprise date? Or maybe a prank? Was there an update on his evil aunt? All the possibilities ran through her mind, and as each second passed her curiosity only grew.
When they arrived at Colin chosen place Clair let out a deep breath she had not realized she had been holding in, “It really is beautiful, I’d argue the Libraries are almost as beautiful if not more” She grinned at him, of course this was very beautiful and she had to agree with him about that.
The smile very quickly washed off her face when Colin spoke again, her face turned to shock “Colin McCoire! You don’t - no you CANNOT mean THAT!”
Colin seemed to catch his mistake, and after a stumble or two, he quickly finished the sentence so t made more sense.
Again, Clair let out a huge sigh, “Thank god.” She muttered while shaking her head slightly.
“OH that!” Relief filled her, “Your ready to do it?” Clair pulled out her wand, “So basically I’ll just trace my wand over the area we choose to create a symbol that is meaningful, I could not find any info on if it hurts or burns, but feel free to ask me to pause for a second.” She took a deep breath, excitement filling her with warmth, “Where should we put the mark?” She questioned, Since it would only show on Colin (and later anyone else she marked) She was willing to put it anywhere that he though would be best, “I was thinking maybe your wrist, but yknow we can do whatever!”

Great Idea, Right? Part 2

The idyllic moment between Colin and Clair turned into a raging gale almost instantly, as soon as Colin spoke without brain oversight being engaged! Oh crap! he thought. Clair's eyes flashed! Colin's widened! Had he just said what he heard himself say? "Colin McCoire!" Oof. First and last name!
Fortunately, Colin had been quick enough on the uptake to recognise his near fatal error and correct it! He gave her his cutest smile! Whew! She recognised it was an innocent mistake and the storm passed!
Colin's heart jumped as Clair drew out her wand. Whoa! He knew it was going to happen, but for some reason, the suddenness of her action instilled a sense of immediacy that Colin hadn't quite prepared for. "You ready to do it?" she asked. Colin let out a puff of air.
"Gosh, I wonder if it'll feel like this when we get married?" His voice was soft, full of wonder. This thing they were doing together. It would bind them nearly as strongly as any vow. Colin looked into Clair's eyes. Not for the first time, he saw there all the beauty and majesty of the sky and the brilliance and sparkle of living waters.
He took her by the hand. His gaze locked with hers.
Eyes of Sky and Eyes of Pond!
Gaze upon the other one,
And none go in between;
There, arising from the heart!
Magic deep and magic strong,
And none may intervene;
Written on his body fair!
Mark of wolf by Lady Clair,
A sign of love by none unseen;
Bound in lore and bound by heart!
Magic deep and magic strong,
Adjoin their minds between!
He paused to let the words sink in. Colin smiled. "I'm ready for it!" he said, excited to undertake this magical bond. He shook his head slightly when she offered to pause if it hurt at all. He'd been bitten by werewolves, burned by spells, eaten by trees and almost by the squid! He would bear a little pain, if there were any, for his Clair!
She asked him where he wanted the mark. Colin nodded. He had known where this mark would go, even before he had fully known what it would mean for him and Clair. The breeze twitched at Colin's long thin braid. Its twin raven feathers bobbed about. Colin undid his school robes and let them fall to the flat stone under foot. He smiled, happy that he was going to do this kind of magic with Clair! Lastly, he undid his shirt and let that fall as well. Colin wasn't afraid that Clair could see his body, his scars, the claw marks, the rips that fangs had made in his flesh.
Colin smiled again, a truly happy smile! He pointed to a spot just above his birthmark. "Put yer mark here, lass! Over me heart! It's yours anyway, you know!"
Colin waited for the magic to flow.

Great Idea, Right? Part 2
The ravenclaw could not help but try to hold back a laugh, Colin’s smile was convincing and it was hard to stay upset, it had been a simple misunderstanding and no harm had come from it.
“I think this is more nerve wracking than getting married.” She said as calmly as possible, her voice wavering ever so slightly despite her hardest attempts to hold it steady. She was not sure either of them, simple 13 and 14 year olds, really realized just how major this decision was, they would be bound for life. Which would hopefully be a long time. “We’ll have to figure that out later though” she said, in a feeble attempt to lighten her nervous mood.
Clair nodded when he pointed to above his heart, it was a good spot. She held her wand like a quill and lowered her hand to his chest, she repeated the words for the spell and slowly and carefully drew the shape out. A moon with a contour wolf, it meant something to them both, it was a symbol of Colin’s wolf-ness but also to the bond she hoped they would maintain for life, a bond as close as a pack of wolves.
When she was finished she pulled away, she suddenly remembered to breath and took a deep wavering breathe before raising her eyes to meet Colin’s.
Her mind seemed to hold something new, a different feeling, she savoured one last moment of curiosity before opening her mouth, She knew the next steps, say the activation word the word to turn on the mark. She smiled and looked straight at Colin, ready to connect them, She said the word, and looked at him without moving her mouth She spoke “It worked!”
Joy lit her entire face, the reading had paid off.

Great Idea, Right? Part 2

Colin gave Clair an encouraging smile when she said doing the binding mark was more nerve wracking than getting married. To Colin's way of thinking, if something was right, he'd do it. If something was wrong, he'd fight it. And what could be righter than being with his Clair and she with her Colin? Even if actual marriage was like a whole three years four months a fortnight away! Such a long time!
Colin took a breath. Really deep. The air was chill, but he didn't mind. She said they'd figure out the whole marrying thing later. That was good enough for Colin!
He wondered how the spell would work, not just from the books he'd read, but in actuality. Clair had asked him for something in Gaelic, a kind of password. He'd chosen an poc ar buile, the mad goat because she loved goats, just as she'd chosen the symbol, a wolf at full moon, because he was a werewolf. Together these signs had deep meaning for them both. Clair prepared herself. Colin noticed that she held her wand like a quill. Now Colin understood! The magic would put the mark into his skin as she drew.
She rested her hands on his chest so she could draw. Colin tried his best to hold still. This was no time for jumping about and howling! There was a little pain, actually. A sharp jab and a scrape. Nothing he couldn't handle, really. Even so, he was glad when Clair was done drawing the wolf. The magic felt a little like a knife. His mind flew back to when he was ten and dear cousin Hamish gave him the scar over his left eye. But the binding mark didn't draw any blood. And as soon as she was finished, that was it! There was no more pain. His skin felt nothing.
Clair looked up and her blue eyes sought his green eyes. She waited a bit. Savouring the moment, Colin reckoned. This was pretty advanced magic after all! But he knew if anyone could do it, it would be Clair! She smiled. Colin loved Clair's smile! Then she said the words: an poc ar buile.
Colin gasped! His eyes opened wide! He heard what she said after, only not with his outside ears! "It worked!" she said, and Colin smiled!
He thought back: "I heard you as clearly as if you were right here next to me! I mean! You are right here in front of me! I mean! You know what I mean!"
This time Colin couldn't help but hop up and down! He took Clair's hands and danced about with her! "Come on Clair! I'll teach ye the song I got the word from!" He was sure she'd like it, because it was about a goat!
Ar mo ghabháil dom siar chun Droichead Uí Mhórdhá
Pice im dhóid is mé dul i meitheal
Cé chasfaí orm i gcumar ceoidh
Ach pocán crón is é ar buile
Áil-li-liú púil-li-liú, áil-li-liú an poc ar buile
Áil-li-liú púil-li-liú, áil-li-liú an poc ar buile
Níor fhág sé carraig go raibh scót ann
Ná gur rith le fórsa chun mé a mhilleadh
Is ea ansin do chaith sé an léim ba mhó
Le fána mhór na Faille Brice
Áil-li-liú púil-li-liú, áil-li-liú an poc ar buile
Áil-li-liú púil-li-liú, áil-li-liú an poc ar buile
Bhí garda mór i mBaile an Róistigh
Is bhailigh fórsaí chun sinn a chlipeadh
Do bhuail sé rop dá adhairc sa tóin air
Is da bhriste nua do dhein sé giobal
Áil-li-liú púil-li-liú, áil-li-liú an poc ar buile
Áil-li-liú púil-li-liú, áil-li-liú an poc ar buile
I nDaingean Ui Chúis le haghaidh an tráthnóna
Bhí an sagart paróiste amach nár gcoinnibh
Is é dúirt gurbh é an diabhal ba dhóigh leis
A ghaibh an treo ar phocán buile!
Áil-li-liú púil-li-liú, áil-li-liú an poc ar buile
Áil-li-liú púil-li-liú, áil-li-liú an poc ar buile
Colin was so happy that they'd been bonded to each other. He was certain that his own happiness and joy were reflected in Clair's eyes. He thought to her again: "Come on Clair! I'll race you back to the castle!"

As I set out with me pike in hand,
To Dromore town to join a meithil,
Who should I meet but a tan puck goat,
And he's roaring mad in ferocious mettle
Chorus:
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
He chased me over bush and weed,
And thru the bog the running proceeded,
'Til he caught his horns in a clump of gorse,
And on his back I jumped unheeded.
Chorus
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
He did not leave a rock that had a passage through,
Which he did not run with force to destroy me,
And then he gave the greatest leap,
To the big slope of Faille Brice.
Chorus
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
When the sergeant stood in Rochestown,
With a force of guards to apprehend us,
The goat he tore his trousers down,
And made rags of his breeches and new suspenders.
Chorus
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
In Dingle Town the next afternoon,
The parish priest addressed the meeting,
And swore it was The Devil himself,
He'd seen riding on the poc ar buile.
Chorus
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat.
Aill-il-lu puill-il-iu - Aill-il-lu it's the mad puck goat

Clair liked the word Colin had chosen, it had felt right for him to choose the word after she had chosen the symbol. Clair was no expert in Gaelic and it had taken her a bit to find the meaning of the word an poc ar buile but once she knew the meaning she thought it was very fitting and thoughtful on Colin’s part.
Hearing her boyfriend inside her head was strange, it was different than what she had expected but not terrible or unpleasant at least not yet.
Clair smiled as Colin told her the song, it was pretty even if she only caught the four words she knew.
Oh gosh more running! I’m going to die she thought, and then tried to stop the thought realizing that Colin could hear her every thought. ‘Your on! I’m so gonna win!’ she thought back, trying to think louder than her last thought.
She ran after her boyfriend, despite her long legs she was still behind him by a few lengths, she bit her lower lip and pushed further. She wondered if this what what race horses felt like. They were not doubt more graceful than herself. When they got to the castle Clair had a huge grin, out of breath she did not even try to speak, ‘Good race! I’ll beat you next time’
