Zach opened the Dueling Club door and entered the room quickly. He really couldn't stand the cold of the Winter breeze. He went straight to the training dummies. His agenda that afternoon was practising spells. He was a duellist so he should do more practice and practice when he had time.

However, the actual reason he was practising was he was bored. He felt he had more free time after reading his schedule at the day before. It's not bad but it's not good either since the Christmas Holiday was about to start and he might go home and can't do some magic stuff at home. So he had to maximise this opportunity to do any magical things like casting spells. Practising some duelling spells might be a good decision and one person he remembered about duelling was Raizel Voltrouz, a duellist from Gryffindor. So he wrote her a letter and sent it via Zephyr, his barred owl.

Hey Raizel! It's Zach

I want to practice some spells tomorrow around 13:00 in Duelling Club. It would be better if you had a chance to join in so we can practice together. But it's okay if you're busy tomorrow. <3

-Zach
And here he was. Standing in front of the dummies after putting his satchel on the floor near the wall. He grabbed his wand and pointed it at one of them. He took a breath before casting his spell. It should staart from the easiest one.

Her daily routine of going to the duelling club was slowly breaking with her getting waves of laziness since last November. Where did her passion go? She knows deep inside she couldn't let go of duelling, reason why she is still finding some time to practice but that was starting to feel dull, exhausting even.

The flame was still there, burning but not as bright as before. Slowly, it was fading but the fact that she couldn't give up is what keeps it from getting completely extinguished. For how long can she keep it up though in hopes of finally seeing some improvements in her skills, to prove that she too could reach the greatness that her family had taken hold of, to prove that blood status doesn't matter.

She reached up as she laid there on her bed, thinking of the goals that she had set becoming unreachable as time goes on. Raizel sighed and got up on her feet. While she might not be feeling that great with all those thoughts in her head, she has a duelling practice to attend to. Zach sent her an owl and she couldn't say no and she figured, practicing with someone would be a lot better than on her own.

And so she went, out of her room and through the portrait door out of the common room. Fortunately, she found her way to the duelling club instead of getting lost and ending at the entrance. She took a deep breath, thinking of how she'll face her friend as she doesn't want to make them feel worried if she shows a gloomy face. "You can do this." The Gryffindor entered and tried to spot a certain Ravenclaw immediately. Once she saw him practicing there, she smiled. "Hey." Raizel greeted him. "You sure look ready." In a way, she is a bit jealous of his energy and enthusiasm.

Zach started to cast something at the dummy in front of him. One spell that comes to his mind was The Knockback Jinx, Flipendo. It was one of the basic spells that duellists need to learn. With a wand in his hand, he cast the spell clearly, "Flipendo!"

The spell hit the target successfully. It wasn't perfect but it was good. There was no backfire or target miss. Zach was quite happy about it but not yet satisfied. He wanted to get a perfect Flipendo that knocked his target to the floor, just like his senior, Beatrice, did in Fall Games.

But then, Zach heard a similar voice near him. It startled him a bit. "Raizel!" the boy exclaimed. Finally, the friend he invited to join him in practising was already there. But something felt not right. She seemed more gloomy. But it could just be Zach's feeling or maybe the winter atmosphere made her like that. "Yeah! I have to practice before going home. I can't do any magic there," Zach gave the girl a big grin.

"So what about you get prepared first?" Zach asked the girl. Then he continued, "I actually want to polish my spells. I feel that my spells are just ordinary. They are good but not perfect. Oh! And the third-year duelling spells too!" Zach felt that Rai had the same capability as him. They had some similarities in their spells. So he thought Raizel was his perfect match if he wanted to practice his spells.

"Do you have any fun ways to practice?" Fun way of practising. He emphasized the word fun, hoping that it might boost her mood in this cold winter.

Now that Zach mentioned it, they aren't allowed to use magic outside of Hogwarts. Boy was she so disappointed after knowing that and to make things worse, her mother even took her wand and kept it somewhere. She couldn't practice any spells, she could try out the high leveled ones that she learned. That was horrible. Now though, it's probably more tolerable. In fact, it might just be the break that she needed.

A break from duelling. Not quitting it but she needs to stay away from it for the time being. The more she thinks about it, the more those horrible performances etched in her mind, making her so desperate for the skills that she's trying so hard to reach yet they never came. She needs to slow down and come back fresh, get her head straight before continuing down this path before she strays away. Maybe then she'll have other ideas on how to be better.

Raizel was too caught up with her thoughts that she didn't even realize Zach was talking to her, only catching a couple of words while others just slipped away from her distracted mind. The Gryffindor shook her head, sporting that same smile that she wore earlier in case her expression slipped during that moment of trance. "Uh sure, let me just… warm up a bit." She said to the boy, pulling out her wand from the wand holster that her father sent her, well, it was more of a long wand bag hanging around her neck, just enough to hold her wand.

Her eyes fell on the chestnut wood that makes up her wand, feeling the twisting structure at the end of it. It feels like it was just yesterday that she got this wand. What did Ollivanders say about it again? Perfect for fighting spells and intended for accomplished duelists? A frown briefly formed on her face. The wand probably chose the wrong person for that 'accomplished duelist' is nowhere to be found in her right now. Her grip tightened, shaking her head to get her head back in the game and let that smile from before replace the frown. She gave her shoulders a couple of exercises to loosen the stiff joints.

"I say, we can probably shoot some spells at each other and try to dodge them." She suggested it to the Ravenclaw boy. It's the only one she could think of and it was how she and Dee practiced before. She got a lot from her. Maybe… she could help her. Raizel does consider her as one of her duelling mentors much like how she considers Bea as her prefect mother.

Raizel seemed to have caught up in her mind, Zach could see that. But the boy didn't know how to comfort her. "Great!" he answered. While waiting for Raizel's warm-up, Zach looked at the dummy again. He attempted another Flipendo, hoping that it would be a perfect Flipendo as he wished. He moved his wand slightly down then quickly made an ascension and a hook in the end. At the same time, he cast "Flipendo!" All of these, he did it quickly.

The spell hit the dummy. But the boy seemed not satisfied with the result. He threw a sigh before he looked at Raizel again. She seemed to finish her warm-up. "Shooting spells at each other?" Zach thought for some moment. "Yeah, we can do that." Then Zach looked for an empty piste, and found one at the corner of the room. "It will be good if we are also doing it on the piste. Let's go there!" He pointed at the intended piste. The boy took his satchel on the floor and moved it near the piste. He went up to the piste first.

"Are we taking turns? If yes, you can do it first." The boy was ready in his duelling stance. He had seen a duel that was full of anger. Perhaps casting spells was one way to release any emotion. He hoped this practice would also help her settle with her emotions even for a little bit.

With Zach agreeing to take turns in shooting spells at each other, Raizel moved towards the piste, taking her place on the opposite side. Her grip tightened on her wand, her mind quickly going through all the spells that she has in her arsenal much like what she does during her duels, may them be official or unofficial. She wasted no time as soon as Zach was ready and they were starting. With her knowing tons of spell, one would think that she would take her time to pick one of those but no. One thing that she learned before is fast casting. If you're fast enough, you could catch them by surprise. It was something that Dee taught her.

A quick gesture followed by an incantation. "Flipendo!" Wand pointed at the Ravenclaw boy. She sure was expecting for it not to hit though, her previous duels coming into mind and lowering her self-confidence to the point that it was starting to become non-existent. Zach could easily dodge this. A miracle though as the spell found its way towards the boy, probably catching him off guard with how it took a while for him to move out of the way of its trajectory.

It left Raizel in shock as she was already sure that it would miss and hit the air behind Zach but it didn't. Why now though? Why not then? Why give her hope now that her spells could still find their marks? "That was unexpected. You okay?" She asked Zach, hoping that it didn't hurt a lot. Not like she has that much of a power behind her spells… or at least, that's what she thinks. She could barely measure it with how much she misses in her attacks that she couldn't tell its strength.

Zach was ready. He was ready anytime Raizel would attack. So once the Gryffindor pointed her wand towards him, he was ready to evade it in his duelling stance. However, no matter how ready he was to take the attack, Zach still failed to see the direction of the spell and made himself hit it. "Ouch!" he exclaimed. The pain from the spell, the familiar pain that he always felt through his past duels, he felt it again this time. Actually, what did he expect from this practice? It would be nearly impossible to not get hit in this form of practice. "I'm okay. That's a good Flipendo." The boy gave a thumbs up.

The boy coughed to hide his pain then said, "Well, it's my turn." He was going to use the spell that he learnt autodidactly. Ventus, the Wind Jinx. Zach cast the spell clearly towards his practice partner, "Ventus!" and his wand conjured spiralling wind that entrapped the Gryffindor. The pale one smiled towards his practice partner even though it didn't make him satisfied yet. His goal was still the same: casting perfect powerful spells.

"Ah, I forget to say this. I won't stop practising until I am at my limit. So I hope you will do so," Zach gave Raizel a smile, waiting for the next action from the lion.

Raizel was expecting a Flipendo as a retaliation but turns out, Zach wanted to try out some advance spells. She knows how much she is similar to Zach when it comes to their liking towards Charms spells and the boy certainly knows almost the same amount of advance spells that she had studied on her own.

A strong gust of wind erupted from the boy's wand with Raizel trying to move away from its path but unfortunately, she wasn't quick enough. That has always been one of the problems in her duels aside from her constant misses. While her spells have almost stopped backfiring on her, she still needs to work on her dodge and aim. But wasn't that what she's been doing all this time? So where is the result of all those practices? Nowhere. Once more, she was reminded of how incompetent she is at the moment, her hold on her wand tightening at the frustration that was starting to build.

It wouldn't be fair if she explodes on Zach though. The boy had done nothing wrong and she would just feel bad if she snapped at him for no reason. She'd be a horrible friend by then and she can't have that, not on this cheerful boy who had shown nothing but kindness and true friendship. Raizel once more brought back her focus, calming down the boiling anger that she just triggered herself while pushing away the horrible thoughts into the back of her mind. Concentrate.

Raizel held out her wand, eyes on the Ravenclaw boy before her. She made a quick gesture, followed by the incantation. "Lumos Maxima!" If Zach was trying out advance spells, she shouldn't be holding back herself and start trying them out as well. Isn't that the reason why she learned them in the first place? To be able to try them out and master it faster than their other peers?

"Ventus!" The crow cast the Wind Jinx at his practice partner, making the gust hit her and hindering her movement. A smile bloomed on his face but the result wasn't enough. His goal was to do a perfect spell.

Zach looked at the lass in front of him, wondering what would she do. After she did some wand movement and an incantation, a blinding light was emitted from her wand. Zach was surprised. "Gah!" he screamed with his eyes closed. It wasn't very pleasant for sure but the light wasn't really affecting the lad due to his ability to estimate his surroundings with his other senses.

"Haha I remember you cast Lumos Duo in the lake. Now I'm getting the stronger version of it, huh?" His eyes were closed but he still could smirk. Last Fall Ball was fun with them both trying to save anybody in the lake. Well, they were drowned but it was also part of the fun. Zach pointed his wand at Raizel. "I didn't have to use this spell on anybody yet." Just after he said that the lad did the wand movement and cast, "Arresto Momentum!"

Unfortunately, it was a bad spell casting. The spell backfired on him. He was now moving like a sloth. It was very absurd indeed, but the lad couldn't help but hold his laughter. It was acceptable since he hadn't practised the spell often. Now he had to taste his own spell.

With the lingering wind from Zach's Ventus still around her, it'll take a lot of effort to dodge his next attack. What will he use? Spells ran through her mind at the possible once that Zach might use. She sure wasn't expecting Arresto Momentum though. She was ready to avoid it but it never came, instead, it backfired, making her flinch.

She had experienced it before, her spells backfiring and those weren't a pleasant memory. This was probably the 2nd time that she saw Zach's spell backfiring on him, the first one was the 1v1v1 duel where his Incendio set him on fire. As much as she wanted to feel sorry for him, this was an opportunity for her and she's not someone who'll let it slip away.

What spell should she use though? Something that she doesn't use that much. After a few seconds of thinking, a spell finally came into mind. “Mimblewimble!” She casted after the gesture. It wasn't that impressive considering that she doesn't use it that much but she does hope it still does its job. The boy couldn't move that much thanks to his own spell slowing him down which she is grateful for as the spell just hit him. “Well?” She asked, wondering if the spell worked. If he couldn't speak after this then it's safe to assume that it did.
