Letter from Charlotte Winfield to dNPC Anadil Winfield
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
9/3/23

Dear Anadil,

To say I’ve been overwhelmed these past few days would be an understatement. I made many attempts to send you a letter, but ever since the sorting it’s like everything finally went into motion. The first day was alright, actually quite spectacular. I’ve only ever read about magic like this. I know you don’t care much for wizardry, but it’s truly a fascinating thing. I digress. By the next day, I was bombarded with homework, studying, and classes. I’ll get used to it, I know. It’s the same amount of work I had to do back home with the tutors and all, but it’s so different. I suppose I’m more overwhelmed with adoration than with stress. Perhaps there’s a word for that.

I was sorted into Slytherin, though I don’t care much for the title. I saw some students crying over their sorting, but I fail to see how that will change my experience here in the slightest. I’m just happy to be attending this school at all.

I’ve taken your advice to heart, and already I’ve met quite a few people. Despite this, interaction outside of the manor is so strange. People my age are… odd. Not in a bad way, it’s just so peculiar, the way that some are so free. It kind of terrifies me, if I’m being honest. Not a problem, though, I’ll work through it. You were right in your previous letter, about the larger dormitory. It’s been nice having more people to rely on, even if I hardly know them.

I’m happy to hear that your theatre troupe has been thriving! Traveling the country must be a dream. I do miss you, though. Maybe you could visit me at home over winter break? Or perhaps not at home, but somewhere in town. I would love to come stay with you, but I imagine there are rules about where students must be sent during that time, since eventually I’ll just be coming right back. And if mother and father ever found out, I’d lose my head. Not really, that’s dramatic, but I’d certainly be in loads of trouble.

I shouldn’t bore you with such a long letter, but so much has happened that I feel obligated to tell you it all. I’ll share more when I’ve had time to adjust. And please update me on your next performance! I love hearing about your travels, truly. I miss you.

Love,
Lottie

Lovely Lottie,

When I received this letter, I can't say I didn't squeal with excitement. It's so good to hear from you, Lottie! Or shall I call you Charlotte now? Time really does fly, doesn't it? I swear, just a week ago you were a little baby rocking in a wooden crib with a thumb in your mouth and a toothless grin. Now you're swimming in the big pond, with the future aurors and ministry officials of your generation! Do you feel older?

I knew you would feel overwhelmed, Hogwarts certainly isn't a school for the faint of heart. But I know you'll get the hang of it. You were always so much better than the rest of us in that way. You're like a little chameleon, shifting colors to fit the world around you. I think it'll be good for you to stay in one place for a little bit.

A Slytherin, huh? I can certainly see it, you've always been a clever thing. It's good that you don't care about things like that, it'll make your time at that school much better. And I'm sure those other kids were just a little overloaded, they'll warm up to it in no time.

Making new friends already? Who are you and what have you done with my sister? I know how you feel, after I left that blasted home I felt like an alien. But I always had one foot on the stage, so I wouldn't expect you to be just like me in the way of energy. And of course I was right! You should know by now that I've got a mind for this kind of thing.

I'd love to come visit you Lottie, you know I would, but it's like you said: mom and dad would have a fit if they heard that you and I had met up. I don't want to put that kind of pressure on you. You don't deserve to go through what I did. I promise you I'll figure out a way for us to speak, but for now the letters are our safest option.

You better keep sharing your adventures with me! I want to know everything. Don't be afraid to ask me questions, I'm always here to help you.

Love,
Ana
