Chapter One
One Year ago…
Silver Chestnut was strange. Not in the normal, I don’t like pizza strange, Silver Chestnut had a secret. She could make animals talk to her and move things with her mind. She was weird. Silver had always hidden these strange talents, even from her own mother. The only people who knew were Dragon and her cousin Mr. Slytherin. They had been there when her dog, Chocolate, had started to talk. Dragon had a strange talent too, she could tell what other people were thinking. Together, they hid the secret.
It was a dangerous time to be strange, with witch burnings all the time. “Dragon, do you know if we might be, well, igni cremantur vel submersi sunt?” Silver switched to the forgotten language, not wanting to be overheard.
“Non, si non maneamus extraneos et in oblivione loqui desinamus.” Dragon said pointedly. Silver had just asked if they were to be burned at the stake, and Dragon said no, if they didn’t do anything strange, like speaking forgotten.
“I think that you should not talk like you're hiding something.” Came Chocolate’s voice. He always had these sorts of remarks. Silver sighed, and rubbed Chocolate’s ears. Dragon looked pointedly at Silver.
“Fine, but can you read farther down the dark alley first?” Silver asked. Dragon sighed and did it, letting the voices fill her head. Silver always wondered what it was like. She could read to, but only with Dragon. As Silver was letting these thoughts swirl her brain, Dragon was letting the alley's thoughts fill hers.
No way i’m eating there again
If she can’t stay out of trouble
He is sooooooo cute, I wish he
They’ll be mad when I tell ‘em
Dragon winced and ran her mind deeper into the alley way, where only people doing dark deeds would be. All was silent until…
Why is this happening to me! I haven’t done nothing’ wrong!
He’ll never have to remember this. He obviously doesn’t know anything about the key to finding all magic. I’ll have to rid his mind.
What is that? What’s happening? Hey is he-
Dragon forcibly pulled the thoughts from her head and started running into the alley way. “Where are you going?” Came Silver's incredulous voice. “Why are you running? What did you hear?” But Dragon didn’t answer. Is she wacko? Silver thought, trying desperately to read Dragon, yet failing. But Chocolate had heard, he had ears, much greater than humans, and had heard what was going on. Heard something ‘bout magic. Ran, probably to save the dude. Chocolate got the attention of Silver and she started sprinting after Dragon. “Dragon! Wait up!”
Dragon managed to dash up to the alley just in time. “Hey, stop right there! I know your secret!” Dragon yelled to the guy holding the stick. The guy in the corner looked about 11, like her. The first guy, obviously the attacker had stopped in his tracks and was looking at Dragon. Silver dashed in, panting.
“Don’t. Run. So. Fast!” Silver shouted at Dragon before looking at the scene rolled out before her. “Oh. Well….quite the scene here.” The guy with the stick moved so fast, it looked like he had teleported. He slashed the stick a couple of times and Silver felt a huge wave of wind come at her. Both her and Dragon were knocked off their feet and then pinned by the guy.
“Well then. Let's fix that.” He pointed his stick at Silver, but before he can do anything, Dragon sticks her hand out and the stick is blasted to smithereens. “Me wand!” He shouts. “Yer’ goin’ ter pay for that.” He begins.
“Edward Williom Birce!” Dragon shouts. Most likely having read his mind.
“How do you know me name?” Edward said, flabbergasted. “ And how did ya’ manage to shatter me wand?” His face darkened. I don’ know, but I gonna find out, then, I gonna hurt ya’ bad.” And he disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Then the guy in the corner spoke.
“Th-thank you. I-I’m happy to meet ya. My name is Pete.” He spoke with a thick accent that bordered on welsh. “So, have ya’ got the gift now too? Ye’ must a’v if ya’ used some shatterin’ spell on that wand.” He said to Dragon. To Dragon and Silver this sounded like complete nonsense. “And you, with the silvery hair, do yer’ a’v the gift’?” Silver, confused about what this “gift” was, said nothing. “Well? Red ‘aired girl? Do ya’ know? And more importantly’, have ya’ heard the rumors 'bout the term ‘orwarts?”
“Um. No sir. But I have heard rumors about WITCH BURNINGS!” Dragon yelled the last part and Silver hurriedly looked around before talking.
“I don’t know what this “gift” is, but I do know that we really should go.” Silver started to walk away.
“Wait!” Yelled Pete. “Tell me yer’ names!” Dragon stopped and pulled Silver around as well.
“Well, my name is Dragon, and she’s silver. Goodbye now.” And they both hurried away, leaving Pete alone in the cold, dark alleyway, desperate to go to safety.

Hogwarts: Origins
Chapter Two
A Tea Time Disaster
When Silver was back in her house, she locked herself in her room and let herself think about the day's events. Believe it or not, she had had more than one disaster that day. Right after she had run away from the alley, her dad came along and started yelling at her. Then, once he had finished, he had told her to never go into dark alleys again, and to be glad she was safe and to run along now or you best hope to have supper tonight. Then she had gotten in trouble at her mum’s restaurant. She had been cooking when her talent started up and the supper dish started floating. Luckily, no one was around for that and she managed to drop the pot before her mum came. She still got in plenty of trouble, as the dish broke and the dish was expensive. But now she was safe in her room, and could read and relax and talk to Chocolate.
“Hey Charlie! Come over here! It’s story time!” Charlie was her cat. Charlie, clever as she was, was never brave enough to grab her mum and dad’s books, so she had to suffice with reading Silver’s.
“I can’t wait to read! Are we reading more spy books?” Charlie asked. Chocolate just nuzzled me and plopped down, not caring what we read. I nodded to Charlie and was about to start reading when the doorbell rang.
“How odd. No one ever comes here.” I said to my pets. They shrugged, so I set the book down to see who it was. I ran downstairs and turned open the door to find Mr. Slytherin and Dragon. “Oh. Hi Mr. Slytherin, Dragon. What are you doing here?” I was a bit confused.
“I wanted to ask you over for tea and biscuits.” Mr.Slytherin said in his East End accent. “I thought it might be a pleasure to talk to you and get to know you better. Make sure you're a good witch and that I don’t have to burn you.” He must have seen the look on Silver’s face because he laughed and said, “Only joken’, I don’t ever plan to burn you at the stake.
“But sir, I don’t mean to be rude, but, sir you’ve never asked to have me for tea before.” Silver said tentatively. Instead of getting angry, Mr.Slytherin broke into a wide grin and chuckled.
“I understand your caution, and I want you to know that the reason I haven’t before is because I haven’t liked tea. But now I do so here we are.” Mr.Slytherin smiled again in his dazzling grin and Dragon gave her a look that said please come, so she agreed.
A week later Silver was putting on a fine dress for tea time at the Slytherins. “Mum, I’ll be off for tea now, but can you look at my dress please!” Silver yelled down to her mum to approve her dress.
“Silver, your dress looks lovely, now have a nice time at tea!” Her mum hollered back at her from the kitchen. So Silver smoothed her dress, grabbed some Jammie Dodgers, and went outside to walk to tea and biscuits.
“So, how is Chocolate these days? Still energetic?” Mr. Slytherin asked as he handed Silver some Custard Creams. Silver, forgetting her manners, answered with her mouth full.
“Fesh gweat, and fhe wis wreally emervetic foo.” Silver swallowed and tried again. “Sorry, yeah she’s doing well and she’s also got really high energy. How’s work going for you?” They continued making small talk for a while until the doorbell rang and Dragon got up to answer it.
“Oh, hello. What are you doing here?” Came Dragon’s voice from the hallway. “Wait just one second.” Then she ran back to where Silver and Mr.Slytherin were. “The minister is at the door. He wants to see you uncle.”
Mr.Slytherin quickly jumped up, and walked to the door. Silver could hear a muffled voice and some muffled conversation. “Yes, I’m afraid I’ll have to.” Then silence then, “Well, I’ll see what I can do, but I don’t think it’s necessary.”
“Minister, I think you misunderstand.” Came the worried voice of Mr.Slytherin. Silver turned to Dragon.
“Can you read, I can’t believe I’m saying this, the minister's mind?” Silver looked appalled at what she was saying.
“Well, I-I, can. Here, I’ll do it now.” Dragon steeled herself and started to read the minister’s mind.
Well I’ll be darned. I’ve found one at last. Just wonderful, now we can teach-wait. It feels like some presence is in my mind!
Dragon, frightened, pushed herself out of his mind and started drinking tea. “He felt me. That’s never happened before.” She sat down, scared and confused.
“Just act normal and we can read each other tonight. Okay?” Silver whispered, trying to calm Dragon down.
“Fine. Now, where did you find these Jammie Dodgers? They are spectacular! And do have some tea or it’ll get cold!” Dragon abruptly switched topics as both Mr.Slytherin and the minister came into the room. “Oh! Hello minister, it’s a pleasure to meet you, and an honor.”
“Yeah, I’ve always wanted to meet you, and I’m just so glad that I’m wearing appropriate clothes. Please, come join us at our tea party.” Silver jumped in, astonished and pleased that he had come, hopefully for tea.
“Of course, I just came from some truly horrible paperwork and I wouldn’t mind a break.” The minister plopped down on the comfy seats and took some custard creams. Then he started making small talk with Dragon and Silver. All was well until Mr.Slytherin passed around the cakes.
Silver was setting down all the cakes when she yawned and accidentally moved the cake with her mind. She didn’t realize until the cake had hovered above the minster, and when she stopped controlling the cake, it dropped on him. “Ahhh! I’m so sorry minister, I was walking to get more snacks, when I dropped the cake on you! I am so so so sorry!” Silver apologized to the minister. Then, before the minister could say anything, Silver fled.
Silver laid down on her pillow, embarrassed and unhappy. She couldn’t believe she dropped a cake on the minister. It was a disaster. No, she was a disaster. Her stupid talent sucked and she wished she didn’t have it. Why couldn’t she be a normal person? Silver started to cry. Her pets immediately went to her and started to cuddle her.
“You are amazing! One mistake does not define you.” Came Chocolate, ready to cheer her up.
“I can help you refine your talent, and also, look at how controlled you are with animals! You can always hear them if you want to. Like me see, you do grea-prise---don’t you agree?meow?!” Charlie suddenly broke up and started to meow, scaring Silver.
“You're breaking up!” Silver yelled. Now she was worried about this. Her talent had never not been controlled, something was breaking it up.

Chapter Three
Suspicious
All in all, Silver was glad when the day was over. She was all ready to go to bed when she remembered her promise to Dragon. So she reached her mind out and called to Dragon. Dragon! I’m ready to talk! Are you ready? Silver waited a bit until the answering call came from Dragon.
Silver! Hi. I am ready to talk. You know. About the minister thing. That was strange. Dragon never talked like that. Oh well, she’s probably stressed.
Great! You can start. And Dragon went into a long list of troubles about mind reading. Just as Silver said goodbye to Dragon, she popped back in and started telling her that she should have been talking to her way earlier. I just said goodbye! Goodnight! And Silver severed the connection. Strange, Silver thought, and went to sleep.
The next day, Silver woke early and saw Mr.Slytherin leaving with three other people. The strange thing about it was that the whole group disappeared as soon as she looked closer. Suspicious. The next day, awakened by her alarm, she saw Mr.Slytherin leaving with a trunk. But she had no time to dwell on it. School was awaiting her.
“Class, today we will be talking about a test, required for all ll year old students. It is quite recent and I am hoping you take it seriously and try your best. The test is in a week so you best study if you hope to pass. Here to tell you more about this test is Mr. Crom. Please give him your attention.”
The class watched as Mr. Crom walked into their classroom, perfectly on time. Mr. Crom was tall and muscled, with dark, black hair and a fancy red cloak.
“Thank you for your attention. I am pleased to meet you all-”
Derik, always the troublemaker, snickered loudly. Mr. Crom pretended not to hear.
“-And I am pleased to have you know more about the test. So listen up, whilst I tell you the guidelines of it.” Mr. Crom seemed to be getting more irritated by the minute.
“Why does he seem familiar?” Silver jumped. Dragon had whispered the question right in her ear.
“Not to me he doesn’t, but something does smell funny. Started smelling funny once he came in.”
“Shhh! We don’t want Mr. Crom to hear us talking over his precious speech about his precious test.” Dragon murmured in a mocking tone.
“Can you smell the funny smell though? It almost smell like smo-”
That's when the fire alarm rang. It was instinct pandemonium with shouting, running, and the occasional whimper of fear. Most people could tell this wasn’t a drill by the fact of smoke pouring out windows and in the hallways. Silver tripped and fell over, almost getting trampled but saved by a kid shoving her away. Silver then saw the most scary thing she had ever seen in her whole life. Fire. Fire was coming toward her and burning everything around to get to her. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before. The fire was moving almost in a straight line toward her.
The school was long gone, but Silver was trapped, her legs stuck under a table from when she was pushed. She managed to get one leg out, but just as she had finished unsticking her leg, the fire came to her.
“Ahhhh! Help!” Silver screamed, before being nearly engulfed in flames. Then the fire touched her. Silver got burned. It wouldn’t look painful, but it was. The fire merely licked her before moving on to the table. But that brief touch with fire was so agonizing that Silver fainted, unconscious, not wanting to feel the burned skin, the torture of it.
Before the fire could completely finish Silver off, a dark figure dragged her away and disappeared. As the figure disappeared, so did the fire. All that was left of the fire was a tiny jar of it, sparkling and innocent.
Outside, Dragon was worrying. Silver was nowhere to be found, and she hadn’t been answering her telepathic calls. It was time for Dragon to read the crowd.
Are school! This is terrible!
At least I don’t have to take my math test
What do I smell?
People are getting too weird
Wait. Dragon thought. What was that last one? She delved deeper into the minds, focusing on that single thought.
It smells sweet, not like a fire. Has anyone else noticed? I don’t want to seem weird. After all, I always smell and see things that no one else can. And of course, I know that I have that emerald stone that talks to me about this “powerful thing". I-
Dragon stopped reading and started running. Pushing everyone aside she searched for a person with an emerald stone. Dragon had almost run out of breath when she saw her. She was wearing a necklace with an emerald stone, and seemed to be smelling something that Dragon couldn’t smell.
“Hi there. Isn’t this so scary?”
“Yeah. I guess.” The girl seemed to be lost in thought. Then she looked at her friends, “do you see that?”
“No.” All her friends looked at the girl tiredly.
“You mean you don’t see that weird looking guy?” The girl asked.
“Actually, yes. For once I do Rose.” One friend said, surprised. Then everyone looked towards where Rose pointed.
“Is he…carrying something?” One boy asked. Then Dragon let out a shriek. What in the world? Rose thought.
Dragon started hyperventilating. “It’s Silver. He-er that person’s got Silver!”
“Who’s Silver?”
“My best friend!” Dragon tried to run to the guy, but Rose stopped her.
“Look. I know you don’t want to hear this.”
Dragon snorted.
“But you shouldn’t go running after someone who can potentially hurt you. And another thing-
“I want to go to my best friend!” Dragon touched Rose to more effectively yell at her. When Dragon touched Rose, Rose recoiled, looking shocked.
“You're one of….them ....I can’t….I need to tell….” Rose trailed off.
“C’mon Rose let’s go.” Rose’s friends, now knowing that when Rose acts that way, they shouldn’t be friends with that person.
“You're right Tom. I’ll go-we’ll go somewhere else.” And apparently forgetting about the weird dude, they flounced off, away from Dragon.
“That was suspicious.” Dragon said aloud to herself. “Just like the time Silver lied about talking to me. I’m going to get to the bottom of this. But first, I need to save my friend.” And she was off like a shot.
I’m going to get away! The kidnaper! Not if Dragon had anything to say with it.
“Stop right there!” Dragon yelled, too angry to care about the crowd of people listening.
“Bloody ‘ell! ‘O are ‘you?” The guy turned around, caught off guard.
“Someone you don’t want to mess with. Give the girl back.” Dragon read his mind. “Logan.”
“‘Ow do ya’ know me name?” Logan dumped Silver on the ground and pulled out a wand. “‘Et away. I’m warnin’ ya.”
“You have a wand! You’re one of….them? You can’t be.” Dragon turned white and started to stare at the wand intensely.
“What ya’ doin’? Whatever, I ‘otta go ‘urt you anyways.” Logan cleared his throat. “Crucio! Get in da’ way of me plans and yer’ getin’ ‘urt!”
Dragon screamed in pain, writhing on the floor and clearly hurt, but she had no wounds, no nothing that might show what was causing the agony. Logan smiled, but didn’t move his wand from where it was pointed at Dragon.
“He-Help. P-p-please. St-stop.” Only then did Logan lift his wand and release the pain.
“Bet you’ve learned a lesson. To be safe, I’ll bring you with me.” But just as Logan was about to take a limp Dragon, he stopped, and looked at the sky. “Bloody!” And he said a word that made many people in the crowd gasp.
“Wha?” Dragon had opened her eyes and was also looking at the sky.
“Visman Agern!” Logan cried and a shield of light appeared around him. “Try and get me now!”
A clump of people became visible, soaring on broomsticks to meet Logan. The head person was Mr. Slytherin. Dragon gasped and when Mr.Slytherin saw her, he cursed and grabbed a wand of his own.
“Bombarda!” Mr.Slytherin yelled. An explosion came to the light barrier and the barrier cracked.
“You’re…..you have…..magic? Dragon said, shocked. Mr.Slytherin cursed again and yelled back to the three others in the group.
“Can you take care of this lad? I need to talk to my niece.” The others nodded and set to work. Mr.Slytherin flew down to have a talk with Dragon, two worked on breaking the shield, and the last worked on getting Silver back.
“Dissendo!” A bit of the shield completely disintegrated.
“No!” Logan screamed and reached for Silver but found that she wasn’t there, instead, she was being held by one of the wizards. Logan cursed and turned on his heel, disappearing just as the shield crumbled away.
“Nuts. We were so close!” A witch shouted and disappeared as well. The two wizards flew down towards Mr.Slytherin.
“So Salazar, how are we to deal with this public fight?” A witch asked, looking over at the crowd of onlookers.
“We make them forget.” The other two wizards looked skeptical.
“Who is strong enough to make them all forget?” Mr.Slytherin, or as the witch called him, Salazar, smiled and pointed at all of them,
“Together we can make a spell powerful enough to make them all forget. You with me?” The other wizards nodded and put their wands together.
“OBLIVIATE!” The wizards yelled. A wave of magic came out of the wands and grew bigger and bigger, passing over everyone in the crowd. As the spell passed over people, they became black eyed and faced. But then the spell came to Rose and hit a snag. Rose was holding up her stone and the spell was appearing to not pass over the stone. “STUPIFY!” Roared the wizards. And Rose dropped like a stone. The spell continued to pass over everyone until the entire crowd had a blank expression. Then the wizards all disappeared and the fire was put out. All in all, it had been a very suspicious day.

Chapter Four
A Most Peculiar Letter
Silver woke up, wondering what had just happened. She remembered the fire and magic, but it was fuzzy. Silver looked around her, expecting to see a devastating scene or her burned body. But she just saw herself in pajamas, in her bed and looking good as ever.
“What a strange dream. It seemed so vivid but it’s impossible. Now I remember, I fell asleep listening to that guy's stupid speech and got detention for the rest of the day.” Silver said aloud to herself. Then she collapsed back on to her bed and slept until it was time for school.
As Silver walked downstairs to get the mail, she thought she heard an owl hooting. Dismissing it as hearing things, she grabbed the mail and headed to breakfast. Looking through the mail she saw a bill, a scroll with an official looking seal, and a letter for her.
“Mum, the post arrived!” Silver called to her mother. Her mother smiled and told her to drop it on the table. Silver did and got straight to opening her letter. It said:
Dear Silver Chestnut, me and my colleagues are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts, school of magic and wizardry. Your supplies will be dropped off by owl on the 21st of August, school starts on the 1st of September. A portkey of a boot will appear at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on the 31st of August, by the winding river. Students may be able to bring a cat, toad, or owl.
Best wishes,
Helga Hufflepuff
Silver stood shell shocked at the letter in her hands. “What’s wrong sweetie? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Silver’s mum looked concernedly at Silver.
“Yeah, you look quite pale. Do you want to stay home from school today?”
“Sure dad.”
“Honey, what’s that in your hands?”
“It-it’s an acceptance letter.” Silver's parents looked confused.
“Mary, did Silver tell you about an acceptance form to a school?” Silver’s dad asked.
“John, why would I keep it a secret? I didn’t know about this as much as you didn’t.”
“I didn’t write an acceptance form to the school. It chooses individuals who show talent to admit them into their school.” Silver explained, making up excuses on the spot. Her parents reacted with delight.
“That’s great!” Her mother said.
“You're looking less pale, but let’s have you stay home to celebrate!” Her dad announced. Silver forced a smile on her face and said she was going to go back to bed now that she didn’t have to go to school. Her parents waved goodbye to her as she trudged up the stairs.
Sitting on her bed, petting Charlie, she forced herself to look at the letter again. A witch, her. How was that possible? She thought about all her strange talents, that suddenly she had a word for. She would probably be able to learn spells and wizardry. Silver looked at the letter, growing a bit more excited. Her heartbeat quickened when she realized she would get her supplies tomorrow. Wait. Did that say owl? Oh well, she was just going to have to find out tomorrow. And what was a portkey? Hopefully the supplies had another letter that would tell her what it was. And she could bring a cat! Charlie could come with her! Sadly, she couldn’t bring Chocolate, but she would definitely talk to him when she got breaks. The school sounded like a boarding school, so she assumed they would have different groups to be put in.
So many thoughts swirled around Silver’s head that she kept thinking about Hogwarts for two hours before realizing she should join her parents for the celebration. When Silver walked into the kitchen, she was so surprised that she had to blink to make sure she was seeing it right.
The kitchen had been transformed into a party room. How they had done it in two hours, Silver didn’t know. There were ribbons and decorations and a huge cake that proclaimed the words, good luck at your new school! Silver started to stutter when her parents came over, carrying presents.
“H-how did you manage to get presents?” Silver asked, stunned.
“We went shopping while you were asleep!”
“Looks like that rest did you good. You look much better!”
“Thanks, this is amazing.” Silver replied, ready to celebrate. “Let’s get this party started!”
So they did. And it was a pretty good party too. They played games, talked, ate food, ate cake, and watched Silver open her presents. At the end of the day, Silver thanked her parents and went off to her bedroom.
“What an amazing party. Right guys?” Silver asked her pets.
Yeah, it was great! Chocolate answered. But why can’t you take me to school again? Chocolate was disappointed that she couldn’t come with Silver and wasn’t afraid to show it.
“I told you. Dogs aren't allowed. Only cats, toads, and owls are. But I promise to try my best to talk to you telepathically.” Chocolate snorted, but stayed silent.
I, for one, will be happy to have something more entertaining to read. You’ll be around other wizards so I’ll be able to grab the books without it being strange. Charlie commented, her boredom of the books here apparent.
I like the books here. Woof woof. Silver felt the blood drain from her face. Someone was blocking her magic. At school she would hopefully learn how to tell who was blocking her and stop that person. After all, It is a school for magic. Not at all comforted, Silver concentrated on Chocolate and Charlie, hoping to get a word from them.
I say, why aren’t you saying anything? Meow. Charlie started to speak, but lapsed back into meowing. Silver groaned. She had been so close!
“I can only hear you purring Charlie!” Silver whisper-yelled.
That’s not good. I know why-woof, woof. Bark bark woof. Chocolate said, under the impression that Silver could still hear him.
“I can only hear you barking too Chocolate.” Silver sighed and decided to think about that issue later. Right now, she has to prepare for tomorrow.
The next morning, Silver woke up early and crept outside to look for owls. She waited for an hour straight, and was about to go inside and try again later, when she saw it. The owl was coming towards her house with surprising accuracy. It landed neatly on her mailbox and handed Silver a package. It then flew off the way it had come.
Silver went inside and opened the box. It had some robes, a few books, 3 bags full of something like coins, and another 2 letters. She quickly opened the first envelope. In it, it told her what a portkey was. A portkey was an object that had been enchanted so that if you touch it, it transports you to another place. Silver smiled and reached for the second envelope. It told her about what the pouches contained. The coins were the form of money for wizards, and she would use them for buying her things in later years.
Silver put all the stuff from the package away and sat down for breakfast, thinking about her new school and how she would possibly explain it to her parents. Oh well. She thought, and started eating her breakfast.

Hogwarts: Origins
Chapter Five
The Four Founders
Today was August 31st. Silver was going to Hogwarts today! She ran to Dragon's house to talk to her about it.
“Hey Dragon! Today I’m going to a new school, Hogwarts!” Silver yelled to Dragon. Hearing this, Dragon smiled widely and ran over to Silver.
“So am I! This is going to be great! Will learn magic together!” Dragon responded gleefully. They giggled together until it was time to go to the portkey.
“Dragon, it’s 2:25! We better get going!” And they were off, walking to the Diamond forest to get to the Winding river. At the river, they spotted a girl around their age there.
“Hello, what’s your name?” Dragon asked politely.
“I’m Minerva, but everyone calls me Minnie. Are you here for Hogwarts as well?” Minnie asked, searching for something.
“Oh yes, and we’re looking for the boot as well.”
Minnie straightened up, clutching the boot. “Found it.” They all crowded around the boot and touched it just as the time turned 3 o’clock.
The boot stuck to their hands and spun them around. It lifted them off their feet and soon the world became a swirl of colors. It felt horrible, but only lasted for a few seconds. They crashed down at Hogwarts.
“Wow!” Silver stood openmouthed at the towering castle before them. Hogwarts seemed to be shaped like a castle, but looked much, much larger than the average one is. Dozens of other people were arriving by portkey, looking just as awed as Silver’s group did.
“This is beautiful.” Minnie declared. Dragon and Silver heartily agreed. A few minutes later a voice told them to go into the castle.
“I wonder who the teachers will be?” Silver wondered aloud.
In the first room there were five long tables full of food and students. A woman walked up to them and told them to go in but to not talk. The new students piled into a long table that was empty. In the middle of the room, there was an empty space.
“When are we going to join the other students?” Dragon whispered to Silver. As soon as she said that, the lights in the room turned off except for the ceiling, which portrayed the outside sky. All the students stopped talking and looked towards the middle of the room. Four figures appeared in the middle and started talking. The witch who had earlier told them to go in talked first.
“Hello students, old and new! It is time for the sorting!” The witch let the applause go for a bit before continuing. “For those of you who don’t know what the sorting is, it is a way for us to know what house you should be in. It doesn’t hurt at all, and in all the ten years of Hogwarts, not a single student has complained. But before we start the sorting , me and my comrades will introduce ourselves.” With that, she stepped down and a spotlight came on the four.
“Hello! You might know us as the four headmasters or the fantastic four, but most of you can know us as the four founders! My name is Godric Gryffindor and if you are in my house, you will need bravery, chivalry, and kindness. Those are the traits I value most, and I hope to see you in my house!” And Godric stepped away from the spotlight with a tip of his hat.
“My name is Helga Hufflepuff, and I don’t care what kind of person you are, but some traits I value are hardworkingness, loyalness, and patience. I hope to be a friend to you and a mentor, and I wish you well.” With that, she joined Godric out of the spotlight.
“Good day, I am Rowena Ravenclaw. Some quality characteristics I enjoy are cleverness, wisdom, and smarts. If you are blessed enough to occupy those cerebral attributes then you will be admitted into my house.” Rowena curtsied and walked out of the spotlight. The last person standing in the spotlight made Silver gasp.
“Dragon, it's your uncle!” And so it was. He appeared to have no idea what his mere appearance was causing them.
“Good afternoon, I hope you are doing well. My name is Salazar Slytherin and I am a person who enjoys and excels at making friends. Many of you who will be in my house are the same. More traits that will get you into my house are cunningness, ambition, and resourcefulness. If you are in my house you will have these traits. Have a good rest of your evening!” And Salazar stepped out of the spotlight. As he did, the spotlight went off and the lights went on.
“This is unbelievable. I can’t….I mean…..well you know.” Silver was shocked that someone she’d known for so long had turned out to be magic. “Actually, now that I think about it, I think it makes things easier. No secrets.” Dragon agreed.
“And now I know where he goes every day. I guess it’s a good surprise!” Then they listened in on what the founders were going to say next.
“It is time for the sorting to begin!” Salazar said. Then he took out a scroll and started to call names. The first on the list was Minnie. “Abarana, Minerva!” Minnie quacked in fear but dutifully went up to Salazar and the others. The founders circled around Minnie and started murmuring under their breath. Finally, they straightened up and Godric looked at the crowd.
“Gryffindor!” Godric shouted and then told “Azkaban, Donald” to come over. Soon Hegla was shouting Hufflepuff and the sorting moved on. A few more names were called (Badan, Cormak; Bzerns, Lilly) before it was Silver’s turn.
“Chestnut, Silver!” Rowena shouted, and Silver tentatively stepped up. When she got into the center, the founders touched their wands to her forehead and started whispering to each other. It seemed like forever but was probably just a minute when Salazar stepped up and shouted Slytherin. Silver walked to the Slytherin table on shaky knees. When she got to the table, a lot of people shook her hands and she sat down, relieved to not have to stand.
The rest of the night went like that and Silver was barely paying attention until a name that sounded familiar came. “Petey Potter!” Silver looked up and saw Pete from the alleyway. She froze. What was he doing here? He was magic? Silver barely heard Rowena tell them that he was Ravenclaw. How was he? Was he? What was going on? Silver managed to pull herself together just in time for Dragon’s name to be called.
“Salazar, Dragon!” A hush fell over the crowd and suddenly people were craning their necks to see Dragon.
“Salazar!”
“Is she his nephew?”
“What if she’s not in Slytherin?”
But all whispers were silenced when Dragon got in the circle of founders. A few seconds later, Salazar straightened up and said, “Slytherin!” A huge roar came from the Slytherin table and Dragon looked relieved when she plopped down beside Silver. The rest of the sorting passed quickly and soon it was time to eat. The founders clapped their hands and food appeared on platters.
“Wow!” Silver exclaimed, surprised about all the food. An older student leaned in and smiled.
“I had the same reaction when I was a first year. Amazing ain't it?” Silver nodded.
“It’s wonderful.” Then the older student nodded to Dragon.
“Must be nice to be her. Already knows so much magic, learned from the best. I would love to be her friend. I’m Fred by the way.” Silver, feeling proud, answered happily.
“I do know her. She’s my best friend, but she didn’t learn any magic from him. We're starting on the same page you probably did. My name’s Silver by the way.” Fred gaped in shock.
“Wow. Nice to meet you by the way.” Fred replied. “So what blood are you?”
“What blood am I?” Silver repeated, confused.
“What blood are you. Like pure bloods are wizards with wizards in the family for a long time, half bloods are wizards with one family of pure blood and one of muggle or muggle born, or one with two half blood parents. Muggle-borns are wizards with both parents are muggles, or non magic folk.” Silver nodded that she understood.
“I’m a muggle born. How about you?”
“Half blood. Mums a witch, dads a writer. A shock when Mum told him.” Silver and Fred laughed and Dragon joined in the conversation.
“I know I’m at least half blood because my uncle can do magic. You know, Salazar. But my parents and aunt died in a rebellion of some sort. They were trying to stop the rebellers and died. But it’s fine. I live with my uncle in a mansion and I’m right next door to Silver.” Fred looked like he wanted to say one thing, closed his mouth, and said another.
“I’m very sorry about that. How do you like the food?” He abruptly switched topics.
They chatted for a while until the desserts came and Fred talked to some other kids. Silver and Dragon got to know some other first year students at the table. There was Tina, Jack, Oliver, Benjamin, Alice, and Lucy. They chatted together about what the next day would be like. Then the founders told the students to get off to bed and Silver and Dragon followed their prefect to the Slytherin common room.
The common room was downstairs near the dungeon, but it was quite warm nonetheless. Silver tiredly went to her dormitory and went to her bed. School seemed like it was going to be good, and Silver had no worries, so she went to sleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. She would need her sleep for the next day, where she would have plenty of worries.

Hogwarts: Origins
Chapter Six
The Charm
Silver was sitting at breakfast, eating some bacon, when the owls arrived. She nearly choked on her bacon because she was so surprised. Fred looked at the owls and said, “Yeah, those owls are amazing.” After the owls had finished coming, Salazar started handing out the schedules. Silver looked at hers and asked Fred how it was going to work.
“Fred, if there are only four teachers and one per house, how do they go about teaching seven years of students?” Fred laughed and smiled.
“That’s a good question. Well, there are 7 grades combined with four houses right, so that's 28 classes for the first period. Now, 28 divided by 4 is 7, for the four founders, so they still have to teach 7 classes each. So they go and duplicate themselves using the Germinio charm. Now the Germinio charm is far too advanced for you, a first year, and me, a third year. Anyway, by duplicating themselves, they can go to all their classes. Brilliant, right!” Silver agreed.
“Why can’t they just hire more teachers?” Silver asked. It seemed like a simple solution to her.
“I don’t know. Maybe they haven't thought of that. Well what’s your first class?” Silver looked at her schedule and saw that it was Charms. Then she had Potions, lunch, double transfiguration, and dinner. The other classes were history of magic, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, and Astronomy.
“What cool classes! But what about math and that sort of stuff?”
“We don’t need them. We mostly just do magical things here at Hogwarts.
“But we don’t need math?”
“No!” Fred got a bit frustrated and started talking to Dragon about her schedule. Lucy went to Silver to talk about the excitement of being able to do spells and potions until it was time to go to class. The first year Slytherins walked together to Charms class, wondering what they would be doing.
When they got in the classroom, they saw Salazar conjuring up desks. “Hello class, today I will be showing you some spells that you will learn by the end of the year, and some spells that you will learn by the end of your time at Hogwarts. So please pay attention and take notes. Let's have class begin.”
He then lifted a desk into the air. “This charm is wingardium leviosa and you will learn this before the end of the semester.” He set the desk down and duplicated it. “The spell I’m using is the germination spell or germinio. You will learn this spell by the end of your time here at hogwarts.”
“Professor? This seems like a spell that could easily go wrong. How do you make sure that you replicate it exactly? And why do you never say the spells you're telling us about?” Lucy had asked. Salazar answered after thinking about it for a while.
“Well, I do know that it takes a lot of hard work to create a perfect copy of something, but you can do it if you practice a lot. That is if you practice when you have already learned this in class, which won’t be for a while.”
He stopped to take a breath before he continued.
“Now, the reason I haven't been saying the spells out loud is because I wanted to show you silent spells, or spells that you do in your head. I thought the spell I wanted and the spell worked outside my head. This is tricky magic you’ll learn how to do in your 6th year.”
He pointed his wand so that the class could see it. “Lumos.” He muttered. A light appeared at the end of his wand. “Now, the lumos spell, I have brightened my wands end so that if ever in darkness, we can see. You will learn this by the end of next week.” The class grew excited about the prospect of doing magic like that.
He then told them to get out their wands to practice a spell. He said it was the unlocking spell and gave them each a lock to practice on. Silver chatted with Dragon as they shouted “Alohomora!” at their locks to try to unlock them.
“Isn’t this such a fascinating spell?” Silver commented on her 10th try.
“Oh yes, and it would be amazingly helpful if we ever manage to get it to work.” Dragon agreed.
“I think I nearly got it, I saw the lock move a tiny bit!” Benjamin said with ecstasy.
After about half an hour of trying, the class heard a click as Lucy unlocked the lock. “Alohomora!” Proudly shouted again after locking and unlocking the lock a few more times. All in all, it was an enjoyable class, and it would be nothing like next period class.
In the potions classroom, Salazar was standing around, waiting for the class to get in their seats. Silver and Dragon grabbed seats by the front and sat down. The classroom had an aroma of herbs and the classroom was dark and cold. Near the desks bunsen burners for cauldrons and boards for cutting up ingredients. The first years took out their cauldrons. Salazar approached the class and started talking.
“Class, today we will be learning how to make a cure for boils. If you pay attention, nothing should go wrong.”
And so the class began, with the first years mixing, measuring, and mincing. All was well until Silver put too much beetle into her potion, and it turned poisonous. A noxious gas poured out of the cauldron, and Silver scrambled away, holding her breath. Salazar whipped around and took his wand out.
“Evansk-” But before he could finish the spell, his wand flew out of his hand to the other side of the room. He ran to get his wand, but before he could, the fumes from Silver’s cauldron formed a more organized clump and zoomed at Salazar. He apparated away before it could reach him, but now he was out of the room, and the gas had to be dealt with by first years.
“Dragon? Any ideas?” Silver looked to Dragon desperately.
“Run?” Dragon suggested. Before they could, the door locked and the fumes grew bigger.
“Something tells me this wasn’t my creation.” Silver whispered.
“Gee, you think?” Dragon replied sarcastically. Then the gas attacked her.
It zoomed into her face and she collapsed, unconscious. “Dragon!” Silver screamed, and dragged her away from the toxic vapor. The smoke turned on Silver and attacked her with such force that she was lifted off the ground. It swirled around her, and she blacked out.
One of the first years, the one that had nearly gotten the alohomora spell, cried out. “Silver!” The substance expanded to fill the entire room and the first years became dizzy and drowsy. Before Benjamin had passed out, he saw a figure standing over Lucy with a wand pointed over her heart. “Lucy!” Was the last thing he said before everything went dark.
Meanwhile, on an island far away, a cloaked figure was cackling madly. “You should really stop that. You sound insane, not evil.” A bored voice from inside a cave came. The figure stopped laughing and replied, walking closer to the cave.
“You should talk, I heard their thinking about naming this sort of prison after you. You’ve been quite evil yourself and the plan was your idea.” The person inside the cave was evidently walking towards the figure.
“I never said I wasn’t evil. And I would be flattered if they named a prison after me. It would secure my legacy. After all, my name is Azkaban.”
The two people laughed together, knowing that their plan was in progress, knowing that they were winning.
