ΰΏ H I S T O R Y ΰΏElla was born on June 22nd, 2012, at 6:32 AM on a dreary, rainy day. Her birth was a nerve-wracking moment for her parents, who weren't sure how their families would respond to the new half-blood baby they'd just welcomed into the world. Ella's father, Jerome, is a muggle. He married Lucinda, a witch, much to the shock of both their families. Whereas Jerome's parents and siblings (he has 3) eventually got used to the idea, Lucinda's family remains aloof and avoids spending too much time with Jerome's family. Even though their attitude bothered Lucinda at first, Ella's arrival changed everything. All she wants is for her daughter to be happy. Despite Lucinda's caring nature, Ella has a hard time connecting with her mother. Their personalities are just too different. She is very much closer to her father.
Although her parents were happy that she was accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it was nevertheless bittersweet. Because they'd raised Ella as a "normal" muggle up to that point, they knew it would be difficult for Ella to adjust to her newfound entrance into the Wizarding world. Although she'd always been in contact with the magical world through her mother, her experiences remained limited due to the regulations regarding spell-casting around muggles.
Ella was torn between joy and sorrow upon receiving her letter from Hogwarts. While she knew new adventures awaited her, she went through quite a sad phase knowing she wouldn't be attending school with her two best friends, Amanda and David. She has a hard time making friends and, being an introvert, tends to be overlooked by people who don't know her. One of the things causing her a lot of guilt is the fact that, because they're muggles, Ella had to lie to her two best friends about why she wouldn't be attending school with them anymore.
ΰΏ F I R S T M A G I C ΰΏ"You'll have to return your borrowed books in two weeks, Ella. But you know the drill - the exact due date is printed on your receipt. Enjoy the reading!" the librarian, an elderly woman with kind green eyes and a warm smile said to Ella.
"Yes, Ms. Turmalle. Thanks," Ella replied quietly.
She turned her back on the counter and walked swiftly toward the glass double-doors of the library. She'd been here countless times before, but she could never quite shake the anxious feeling she got walking the 45 steps (yes, she'd counted) from the counter to the exit. She always had the strange, unwelcome feeling that everyone was watching her - even though, of course, that was silly...everyone had their nose in a book.
Ella shifted the ten books in her arms slightly to relive pressure on her elbow. One of the corners had been sticking into the bend of her arm. She came to an abrupt stop immediately in front of the double-doors, a slight contemplative frown on her face. 'Oh, Ella,' the voice in her head said softly. 'You always make life so difficult for yourself.'
Biting down lightly on the tip of her tongue, Ella turned slightly and used her elbow to press down on the door handle while pushing the door open with one of her legs. Having maneuvered out of the building, she stood in front of the entrance, blinked a few times, and groaned. It was raining.
"Of course," she muttered under her breath. "Now how am I going to keep you dry?"
"Look. A bookrat talking to books. What a freakshow."
Ella felt herself turning red. She looked at the group of teens out of the corner of her eye. 'Just ignore them.'
"Look at her. She's turning the color of a tomato!"
'Don't react. Don't let them know you're scared.'
"Hey, bookrat - you know books can't talk back, right?"
Ella felt that twinge of anger - one she'd been feeling more and more often recently - rise up within her. The voice in her head that was usually all reasonable and soft began to become more irrational, louder, and angrier.
'Who do they think they are...bookrat...at least you can read...they probably don't even know the difference between the letter a and d...'
"HEY! We're talking to ya. What's up, bookrat?"
"Stop calling me that!" Ella screamed suddenly.
Just like her, the group of teens was shocked. Their surprise, however, evaporated much quicker than hers - and turned swiftly into sneers and evil grins.
"Oh, is the bookrat getting mad? What are you gonna do, throw your books at us?"
"NO - because first of all, I wouldn't want to get your grimy germs all over them and, second of all, you're not worth it!"
Ella struggled with the two voice clashing in her head - one actually encouraging her to throw the books, the other urging her to calm down before something -
CRRREEAAAKKKK - SPLASH - SPLATTER!
Ella watched, horrified, as the library's rain gutter came loose. A mess of dirty water and sludge splattered onto the heads of the teens. Her horror turned to glee and she giggled; as the teens squealed and realized she was amused by their predicament, Ella swiftly ran away in the opposite direction, toward her mother's car. She didn't know what happened back there, but she could've sworn...was it possible that, in the moment the rain gutter came loose, some sort of energy had pulsated from her? It felt almost like a...tingling. Like a rush of light wind. Could it be...that this was what her mother had tentatively told her about? Her first accidental experience with...magic?
