Wren tried hard to focus on nothing but the clicking of her boot heels against the old wooden floors of the train. People flitted by her and she ignored them, holding her head high and walking as if she had a place to be. She really didn't though, she was just trying not to cry over being away from her parents. Come on wren, you're 11-years-old, almost 12 now! You aren't a child anymore. You have to pull it together. She scolded herself.
Really it was just all too much, she didn't feel half ready to be so dreadfully alone. Her peers that passed her by with nothing more than a curious glance, all had people at their sides, friends, sibling, partners even. Wren had no experience with that. Well.. not no experience, but nowhere near enough. Not for the first time she resented her isolated upbringing. Near complete isolation, all in the name of what? Growing up in the ancestral home where she was ridiculed by everyone she came into contact with? But it's hard to resent her parents when she already misses them so much. The further and longer she walks, the less people she sees around her. The amount of them goes from an walloping tide to a slow occasional trickle. And before she even notices it, she's in a semi empty car and the train will be leaving soon, she's gone so far she might not be able to wave to her parents as the train leaves. That thought brings fresh tears to her eyes and without thinking too much she quickly slips into the closest train car as to avoid being seen in this state, not that there is anyone to see her. Sniffling slightly she slides into the window side of the booth seat taking deep breaths and trying to beat back the fear and grief. Why can't she just be normal? Everyone else is excited to being going away! She was excited this morning! Why does she have to think so much? As her breathing starts to even out she finally takes note of her surroundings. An empty car booth, far away from the cars with anyone in them. She hears the intercom call 15 minutes until departure. Great, she's done it again. How are you supposed to make friends or connections in an empty car genius? Why can't you just get out of your head?

As Regulus boarded the Hogwarts Express, they saw their parents waving and still lecturing them about taking care of themselves with their sister Alex in their arms. Regulus waved back awkwardly and hurriedly went to find a compartment since they were just on time and the express was leaving as soon as he boarded.
*Knock, knock.*
Regulus knocked on the only compartment left with seats and the blonde girl inside who was looking at the window jumped slightly and opened the door. Her eyes are kind of red, like she had been crying and she was panting softly.
"Can I help you?" she asked in a small voice, like she barely can make out a sentence.
"Yes... I was wondering if I can sit here? The other compartments are full."
She nodded and walked back to her seat, continue staring at the window. The atmosphere was really awkward and Regulus could not bare it anymore.
"Hi... I am Regulus, Regulus Tannant. First year." Regulus spoke up.
There was a brief silence until the girl replied, "Wren Snowbell, first year."
Regulus was glad she replied despite the sadness in her voice. They decided to not ask her about it yet and she would tell them when it was the right time.
"So... which house do you think you are gonna be in, Wren?"
"Hmm... probably Slytherin."
"Very ambitious!"
Regulus and Wren then started chatting and sharing stories and snacks during our ride to Hogwarts. Who knows even two introverts can get along so well!
Soon enough, they have reached Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Wren eyed the person suspiciously while she let them into the compartment. And they returned her look with an awkward sheepish look. She internally rolled her eyes as she let herself fall back into her seat with a plop to continue glaring out the window. Moments pass, and she's almost able to ignore this other kid completely. But of course this kid can't read the room. They clear their throat before saying,
"Hi... I am Regulus, Regulus Tannant. First year." For a moment she considers if it is really necessary to respond to him, she really wasn't in the mood for this, Alright that's enough Wren, you are not gonna make any connections or friends moping around and giving everyone the cold shoulder. She scolded herself. Bracing herself internally for an awkward, small talk, conversation she turned her gaze back to them.
"Wren Snowbell, first year." She internally winced as she hadn't spoken for a while and couldn't keep the emotion out of her voice. But they seemed to perk up a bit at her response. Oh, please don't be a chatty one, I don't think I can take that today. She thought. They lapsed back into silence for a moment, before he asked,
"So... which house do you think you are gonna be in, Wren?" Now that's a good question, she's always wondered, but until recently it was purely theoretical. I mean she wasn't expecting to get a letter from Hogwarts on her 11th birthday. I mean, well yeah her parents went but somehow it never sunk in that she would probably go too. But the more she thought about it the more obvious it became.
"Hmm... probably Slytherin."
"Ah, very ambitious!" They, joked.
"Yeah.. I guess I am. Hey what house do you think you'll be in?

A loud noise from the door opening interrupted the two students chatter. It was a girl whose left eye was covered by her own hair. She looked at both kids in the cabin and smiled apologetically.
"Excuse me, didn't mean to make that much racket. Mind if I take a seat next to you?" She closed the door behind her, already assuming that the answer would be positive and sat down next to the blonde girl that had not the most welcoming face.
"Willow Sorrow, nice to meet you."
"I'm.. Regulus Tannant. Nice to meet you too." They said shyly. The other girl really didn't seem in the mood to talk but made the effort to say her name. "Wren Snowbell."
"Those are such nice names! What were you two talking about?" She asked. The short black haired kid cleared his throat. "Uh, we we're asking each other which houses we think we'll be in." He looked at Wren. "I think I'll be in Hufflepuff."
Regulus' answer made Willow beam. "I think I'll be in Hufflepuff too. At least that's what my parents assumed. What about you Wren?"
"Slytherin."
"Ooh my mother was in Slytherin. She's very powerful!" Willow's smile dropped slightly. "Are you okay? You look like you've been crying." She tilted her head while looking at the blonde.

Wren's eyes widened for a fraction of a second as dread that the two could tell. How perceptive are these weirdos? She barely shed 1 tear and they could tell that easily? Well she was pretty pale, her nose and eyes were probably pretty red. She quickly schooled her expression to neutrality before her inner monologue could become noticeable and threw together a semi convincing lie.
"No, I have just have autumn allergies."
"Oh that's cool ya know I-" The brown haired girl, wallow? windy maybe? I don't remember, was cut off by the train lurching forward suddenly, knocking all three of them off balance, as it made and entirely too loud whistling sound that echos through the station making her ears ring. Regulus, who was leaning forward, was thrown back onto the back of the booth and the brown haired girl practically goes flying out of her seat, luckily Wren regains her balance quick enough to throw an arm out in front of her and stop her from falling flat on her face.
Wren is about to ask if the girl is okay, but before she can the girl is reaching across her to open the window on the other side of her.
"What are you doing?!" Wren yelps in shock. The girl twists around to look at Wren.
"We're leaving! It's our last chance to wave out the window at our families!"
"Oh." Wren responds but she might as well have said nothing at all because both Regulus and the brown haired girl are now poking their heads out the window to look for their family members.
Wren joins them poking her head out of the window. It's been an hour since she got on the train, so she has high suspicion that her parents have already left, but as she looks around, she catches a glimpse of platinum blond hair and he mother meet her eyes. Her mother gives her a little wave and she waves back as her father notices what's going on. She looks over to her cabin mates smiling and waving at their families, maybe this wont be such a terrible train ride after all.

The students got back onto their seats with mixed feelings expressed on their faces. A wave of silence filled the cabin. Everyone was swimming in their own thoughts instead of sharing them out loud. The absence of chatter could be both awkward and relaxing. Wren looked out of the window while Regulus seemed to want to break the awkward silence but didn't have the words to do so. Willow didn't exactly have anything to say either, but she didn't want to stay silent for the rest of the trip so she just started rambling about random thoughts that came to her mind.
"I've always wanted to learn magic. I very excited about everything Hogwarts has to offer honestly." She paused. "I think I'm extra excited to have potions. My dad's a potioneer so he has taught me some basic things. I already forgot half of it but I'm still excited. "
She talks very slowly for some reason. Not enough to be annoying but enough to make others sleepy rather than interested in what she's saying. Since neither of the other kids commented on what she was saying, she just continued.
"I'm also excited for Herbology. But we don't have that class this year sadly."
Willow looked at Wren, then down at her clothes. "Your dress is pretty."
That blonde girl looked a bit taken back. Probably not expecting such a turn in the topic the brown haired girl was talking about. "Ah, thank you." She looked down at her own clothing.
"You're welcome. We should change our clothing before arriving though, sadly you won't be able to wear your pretty dress more after this." Willow added.

The brown haired girl's words hummed in Wren's ears as she stared out of the window at the rapidly rushing by scenery. The ever present chatter distracted and calmed her nerves, allowing her to drift between her thoughts and listening to the actual words she was saying leaving her in an almost dream like state. It was strange, having someone talking with her made her feel some what less.. frantic? I guess? In fact it made her quite calm really. Which is why she was so caught of guard when the girl suddenly-
"Your dress is pretty." It took Wren a solid 3 seconds to realize that the girl had said you and was talking to her.
"Ah, thank you." She replied, just to narrowly miss getting cut off again by the girl.
"You're welcome. We should change our clothing before arriving though, sadly you won't be able to wear your pretty dress more after this." Then possibly for the first time this entire train ride, the girl was silent for a moment, as if realizing for the first time how different from home Hogwarts would be.
"Right... Well you're right actually" Wren acknowledged checking her watch only to be shocked by how long they'd been on the train. 1 and a half hours already? "But I think as of right now that's not really a concern, we still have quite a while until we get there. I am feeling a bit hungry though, and it is lunch time did your parents pack you a lunch of give you money for the train food?"She asked, unsure why she cared.

Wren turned the card back towards herself and pursed her lip staring at the card with no small amount of disappointment. She glanced back over at the brown haired girl, feeling ever so slightly jealous, but she shook it off as she pulled her coin purse out of her pocket and tucked the card in for safe keeping (it may not be the card she wanted, but she still doesn't have it so obviously she's gonna keep it).
"Well I don't know about you two, but I have money for the train food. Come on! Let's go to the dining cart! I hear the food at Hogwarts is amazing. I wanna find out if the stuff on the train is any good." The brown haired girl said, popping off the booth seat and straightening out her skirt as she stood. Regulus too stood up, rifling around in their pockets as they did. Oh I guess we're all going? Okay then. Wren stood as well pulling her lunch bag out from under the seats and following the two as they strolled out the door beginning to chat about something as they did. Wren shut the cabin doors behind them and walked behind them as they spoke. As they walked she looked into the other cabins, some were empty, with people belongings strewn about inside, some were filled with people laughing and debating over lunch. She passed a car with a fidgety looking orange haired boy, and another with, a girl with long blond braided hair, a peppy looking red head girl and a raven haired person with dark eyes. She also passed a cabin in which the middle table was piled with an excessive amount of candy and candy wrappers as well as four residents, two brown haired girls, one with wild and curly hair the other with long straight hair, along with a brown haired boy and a girl with brown streaked blond hair. Eventually the three of them made it to the dining cart, and she had to say, it was very pretty and vastly different from the rest of the train's cars. It was bustling with students with big long windows framed by red curtains that were held back by gold tasseled ropes. Students of all ages sat at tables eating and speaking with one another boisterously, it was quite the happy site. The brown haired girl from her cart grabbed Regulus' hand to ensure that they didn't lose each other which then prompted Regulus to grab Wren's hand, which she would have protested if she had been hear able to hear herself think over the cacophony of voices. So she resigned herself to being dragged through the train cart toward the counter on the far side. After bumping into a few people including a rather judgemental looking black haired girl they finally made it to the lineup to the counter. She was already craving the sweet silence of their cabin as she leaned against the wall of the cart when the brown haired girl turned to her, with a sympathetic look on her face, clearly gauging Wren's obvious dislike for this place.
"Hey Wren, since you've already got your lunch, why don't you go look for a table for us? Maybe on one of the wall sides? It might be quieter and less crowded over there." Wren decided to take the out.
"Oh yeah, sure thing.. uh," Oh great job idiot, now she knows you don't know her name. "uhm-"
"Willow. Willow Sorrow."
"Oh right, sorry I-"
"No no it's fine don't worry about it, I've only told you my name once, it's no big deal really!"
"Oh- Okay, I'm just gonna go then. Find us a table."
"Okay, bye!" She smiled sunnily, this girl is far too forgiving. But hey, no harm no fowl right? Wren hurries off weaving through the crowd far more gracefully when not being dragged. Wow this car is pretty. Well, really it was pretty much the same as all the other cars, except for the massive ornate skylight. The window twinkled where it was hit by rays of sunlight broken up by dark gray angry looking clouds it was like a painting. But as she gazed at it, enamored, she forgot to watch where she was going and ran straight into someone. Someone very tall and very unhappy.
"Oi, what where you're goin' short stack!" The kid barked at her, she looked up to see a group of kids that looked no more that 2 years older than her all twice her size, all staring at her with varying levels of annoyance, indifference and amusement. She stood there for a moment frozen in shock. "What's wrong? Cat got your tongue? Huh?" The boy griped at her insistently. She snapped herself out of it.
"I-"
"FINALLY! Took you long enough, what took a minute for that pea rolling around your skull to for words?" Okay, who does this freak think he is.
"Excuse me?" She sneered at the boy, "What's your problem?"
"What's my problem? You're the one who ran into me. Watch your attitude, pea brain." The boy said in a lower tone, glaring at Wren and stepping towards her. Oh no. Wren did not mean for this to happen, oh no, what does she do now?

Before Regulus could react, Willow was already dragging them along, seeming very eager for lunch. They arrived in the dinning cart. Groups and groups of people were around which made Regulus increasingly anxious. Willow gave them a reassuring smile and together they inspected the enlarged menu.
Willow hadn't said a word but from her expression, she looked quite amazed by the amount of options. Regulus, on the contrary, was slightly overwhelmed by the choices and decided to get the safest option - shepherd's pie, with a medium sized cup of latte.
Regulus got lunch not long after and offered to stay with Willow, but since she was still deciding, she insisted them go back first. They reluctantly complied, and started heading back to find Wren.

"What's my problem? You're the one who ran into me. Watch your attitude, pea brain." The boy said in a lower tone, glaring at Wren and stepping towards her.

Regulus was surprised by the scene happening in front of them. They wanted to defend Wren, but was petrified at the situation at hand.
"H-hey! What do you think you are doing?" Regulus stammered. They had no idea why they said that. Their legs unconsciously move and they were standing in front of her, trying to shield her from the danger. Wren was surprised. Her face however did not show any emotion of shock but her eyes gave it away.
"O-oh... I-I am so s-s-scared!" the boy sneered, with the obvious fake stammering.
Regulus was shaking, they move back in reflex which cause both of their backs slamming against the wall whist the boy came closer.
"Hey! That's enough!"

Willow was left behind choosing what she wanted for lunch, and after a while, she finally decided on what to get. A cheese and onion sandwich and a cup of lemon tea. The brown haired girl looked around, looking for her fellow friends that were supposedly sitting down on some table, with a wooden tray on her hands. However she found them fearfully looking at a group of older boys instead. She paused for a second as she processed the situation and then walked in their direction.

"Hey! That's enough." She stood behind the group of older students who looked behind with ugly faces. "Sorry to interrupt but may you let my friends go?" The group chuckled and the one boy that was mocking Regulus just a moment ago bent over to be eye to eye level with the shorter girl. "Oh sure thing. How about you teach these rascals how to respect their elders first?"
Willow looked at Wren and Regulus in confusion. Wren looked to the side uncomfortably and Regulus was panicking hard. Willow could only apologize for whatever they had done to upset the boys, even if she bet it was only an overreaction on their part. "I'm sorry for them, I'm sure none of them meant what they've done. It won't happen again."
The boy rolled his eyes. "Yeah, there better not be a next time." One of his friends tapped his shoulder. "We don't have time for this crap dude." After a trade of glazes between them, they finally left the first-years alone.
Wren sighed and turned towards an empty table. Without saying a word, she walked towards it and sat down. Willow looked at Regulus "They won't bother us anymore Regulus. It's okay." She smiled warmly at them. They nodded. "Yeah.. You're right." They breath in and out slowly, trying to calm down. The brown haired girl started walking towards Wren's table. Regulus followed, still a bit shaken-up.
Wren took out her lunchbox and the other two put down their trays of food down and started eating in silence.
