Incurable
"Dad, I'm a little scared..."
Mae sat in the waiting room of St. Mungo's with her father, David Key. She was waiting for an appointment that would confirm what she already knew: she had the same genetic disorder as her dad, and it was incurable.
"Don't worry, Bug. Even if you have it, it isn't that bad."
"Don't call me Bug! I already know I have it. Look at my nails." she said, showing her dad how the fingernails on her thumb and forefinger were cracked, "And my knees. They hurt all the time. So do my ankles. I walk funny!"
"No you don't-"
"Dad, I'm not stupid. I know I do. But I can deal with the symptoms. I always have."
"So then why are you scared?"
"I don't know. It's just scary to have something wrong with me that they can't cure."
"Won't, you mean." David sighed, "Let me tell you a story. You know I was a wizard my whole life, right?"
"Yeah?"
"Well, before me the wizards had never even heard of Nail Patella Syndrome. No one had it. Until my mom married my dad, no one needed to worry about it. But my mom, a Muggle, had it. I inherited it from her. No one knew what to do."
"Did they try to cure you?"
"Yes, but when they found out that it was genetic, they all stopped. Nobody, not even wizards, are willing to screw with genes."
"Mae Key!"
Mae started as the nurse called her name. She stood and walked out of the waiting room, ready for her diagnosis: Incurable.
