And still another, the most important, was: well, other people have their opinions too. (Flannery O'Connor, Good Country People)
There seemed to be two highly popular spots for the pupils of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to do their homework: the library and their common rooms, the last one depended on which house they are in. Funny thing was, Maverick Castle could not decide which one he disliked more to do his - the library had a knack of being more crowded, whereas the Gryffindor common room noisier.
Life was full of uncertainties, but if there was one, Maverick knew what it was: having a private space was a necessity. Fancy possessing this luxury! His private space would be his and his only; he could keep it quiet at one time and full of music at another, depending on his mood, and no one would have the right to complain.
But since such right was denied at this school, the part-Veela decided that a place not visited by many ought to serve its purpose just fine. It was uncommon for him to start working on an assignment 24 hours before the deadline, but this time he guessed that if he wanted a free weekend, he had better take this not-taken road. Or in other words: it was only Thursday, less than 30 minutes after the last class, and Maverick began to do his homework, due Monday, in the Small Hall.

After her last class of the day was over, EmmaLee headed straight to her room. Her large, fluffy white cat, Minx, gave her a short mew in greeting and hopped down from the bed to follow her girl into the closet. Once EmmaLee had been rummaging around in the closet for a bit, she produced a small wireless radio and leaped back out into her room, holding the thing up in triumph.
"Voila!" She said, waving it a little bit over her head for Minx to see as the cat more calmly patted out behind her. EmmaLee had procured the magical radio over the summer, hoping to be able to tune into some non-magique music while at Hogwarts. If this didn't work, she had convinced her stepfather to buy her some records to play on the phonograph in the rehearsal room. Hopefully this would allow her to play music in a better variety of areas. "I finally have a free moment to go and test this somewhere. Want to come?" She asked as Minx moved around her and back towards the bed. The cat answered by giving her girl a lazy yawn and hopping back onto the bed to resume her napping in a patch of sun that had also found rest there.
"Party pooper." EmmaLee pouted as she headed towards the door. "I'll just find someone else to enjoy my music with me." The pale girl left her cat to her sunbathing and proceeded out and up into the greater castle. She continued on to the small hall, where she was hoping to get a little peace to fiddle with the radio before finding some company and hoping to get a good magical reception.
Once in the small hall, she began to set up her wireless on a small table near the fireplace, tuning the dials and listening for some music, searching for a song she was familiar with. Admittedly, in her excitement at having a chance to fiddle with this thing, she didn't take notice of anyone else in the area. Not many people actually hung out in the small hall, so she took for granted that anyone might have taken refuge there at the same moment she decided to fill it with music.
After a few moments of hearing nothing but static, she was caught off guard by a sudden blaring of guitar and violins "BUM BA NA NA NA BUM BUM. Let's go girls." and jumped back only to stumble and fall on her rear into a nearby chair. "Well there's something." She said with a small laugh as the song continued to play out of the radio at a far louder volume than she had intended. Granted, she didn't necessarily like this particular song, a popular one by a non-magique singer named Shania Twain, but it was the kind of music American country music she was looking for, so she left it on, hoping that the next song to play would be a better one. Though, she did turn the volume down. The jarring intro was one of the reasons she would rather not listen to it.

Maverick was concentrating in his attempt to tackle a particularly annoying question when a stupid song destroyed his concentration, its music an ugly pop and its singer's voice comparable to that of a banshee's. Quickly the second year Gryffindor lifted his head, eyes following ears in order to find out the location of its source: it was some kind of radio, he believed, the owner clearly the blonde next to it.
The part-Veela squinted, fire in his sage green eyes. Who in the world this student thought she was that she had the right to put on out loud such a bad music in public and annoy others around her? The queen of the world? Gosh, that title did not even exist in real life! (And if it had, he, Maverick Castle, would be undertaking a quest to throw the said queen off her throne!)
"Hey, you! You there, with the radio!" he shouted angrily at the fellow pupil. "Turn down that thing, will you? That's a disgusting song that thing's playing!" Still fuming (was smoke literally coming out of his ears at this point?), Maverick did not take his eyes off the preteen, making sure that she followed his order.

EmmaLee jumped about a mile in shock when she heard a boy shout at her from across the room. She turned to see a Gryffindor with dark brown hair that she recognized from classes. EmmaLee tended to stay quiet and focused in class, so she hadn't really interacted with a lot of her classmates, but by this point, she at least knew most of the names of the people in her year and house. If she remembered correctly, this particular boy's name was Maverick Castle.
A quick glance at what he was doing revealed that he had apparently been working on homework when she had come in and accidentally, but loudly, interrupted him. The French girl shook her head and frowned deeply at her own rudeness. She should have known better to check if there was anyone else in the room before fiddling with her radio.
"I am sorry, Maverick." EmmaLee said, turning towards him and embarrassedly tucking a strand of white hair behind her ear. "I did not see you there and I did not mean for the radio to be that loud. It is my first time trying to use it." She explained sheepishly, turning to reach back and turn it down just a little more. At that volume, despite the smaller space of the hall, EmmaLee could still hear the poppy country song, but she hoped that Maverick could not.
"On the other hand, I admit that it isn't the greatest country song in the world, but I wouldn't call it disgusting." She said, turning back to him and putting her hands on her hips. "That's a little rude, don't you think?" There were other, better songs that EmmaLee was h0oping to hear from the radio, but she more or less believed in the idea that if you don't have anything nice to say about something, at least don't say anything mean.

At the other student's sassiness of addressing him by his first given name, the Gryffindor totally flipped. Was she an idiot, or had she been living under the rock all this time? No polite person in the whole United Kingdom would do so! Have you ever heard of a professional businessperson addressing their potential partner as Miss Anna? No! They would definitely address her as Miss Benson!
"You dare using my given name?" he shouted at her. "Have you no manner, woman? Who are you to me, my sister or my grandmother? You're not even my friend! And given names are reserved for closest people! Never heard a university professor delivering a lecture, or businesspeople making a deal? A country's president delivering people in their speech? You've been living under a rock all this time, huh?"
And at her remark that his words were a little rude, he banged both fists on the table, his inkwell fell upon the impact, black ink pooled and soaked the table. "Ooooh, so now you're bossing me around? All right, who died and made you queen?"
His petite body shook with anger, senses sharpened, ready to attack. He was somehow sure, albeit it may not be true, that arguing with this youngster was useless and his fists would do the job much more effectively.

EmmaLee's eyes grew wide at Maverick's outburst. He went on a tirade about grandmothers and sisters and businessmen that really didn't make since to EmmaLee, but what she did catch was the he was offended that she had used his given name instead of his last name. What was she supposed to call him? Mr. Castle? Well, sure if he were an adult she wouldn't have thought twice about calling him Mr. Castle, or Professor Castle if he was a teacher, or even President Castle if he were so, but he was a child. In what world do other children call each other by their last names? Well... in Maverick's world apparently. She had heard boys call each other by their last names. Maybe it was a boy thing, but why was this boy taking it so personally?
Her mind reeled in confusion as his lecture abruptly turned direction and she jumped another mile as his fist slammed on his table and his ink spilled everywhere. Was she bossing him around? What had she said? She had told him that him calling the song disgusting was rude, but was that bossing him around? He had started this encounter angry, and his anger was just escalating rapidly as they stood there. Maybe the best course of action was to just apologize and let him go back to his studying. She could find somewhere else to play the radio, far away from anyone she could possibly bother.
She held up her pale hands, palms towards him, in a kind of surrender, trying to calm the raging lion before her. "I am sorry, M - um Castle? We seem to 'ave come to some misunderstanding. I wasn't trying to be rude or boss you around. I really did not mean to upset you so, but I do not understand why you are so upset." She said, sheepishly.
She really had just been trying to listen to her new radio and have some music from home. What happened?

Her meek reaction worked perfectly, just as people said that honey made a better trap than vinegar. Listening to how she apologised and addressed him by his surname, the part-Veela almost purred in approval. Almost; he was still hot.
"That's better," he said approvingly, not in a friendly tone but a tone that a military general used for their subordinates. "I don't usually care to explain why I was upset with one's action, but since you've apologised sensibly and acknowledged your mistake, unlike most insensible students around here, I will make an exception. You see, my good lady, given names are reserved for people closest to us, by choice or by blood. Maybe not when we were children, but now that we're teenagers, we're supposed to leave behind that childish habit and start acting like young adults.
"Second, my musical taste and my words are my business, and others have no right to judge and tell me they are rude, or other negative judgemental words. The appropriate way to inform someone in such case would be, 'I don't like how you this or that, could you please that or this'. By saying 'that is rude', it will sound like you're bossing that person around to change their way and apologise to you. That's one thing most humans hate to do, for it hurts their pride. Is that clear to you, Miss...?"

EmmaLee was taken aback by his shift in attitude. ~What an arrogant boy.~ She thought as she wrinkled her nose at his tone and demeanor, but said nothing on that topic. Half the things he was saying didn't make any sense and the general way he was talking to her, as if he were some refined adult in miniature and she was some plebe in his presence, was very off putting.
"Well," She began with a slightly confused frown on her pink lips, "'ow very Roman of you." Her tone suggested that it wasn't exactly meant as a complement. "Still, I would suggest that neither of your points exactly stand. Unless your birthday is in September, neither of us are thirteen yet and I don't know many adults who would speak as rudely as you do. 'Ave you ever 'eard the adage 'If you don't 'ave anything nice to say, it is better to keep it to yourself'?"
Accidental offenses were one thing, but this boy seemed to be determined to be offended at anything and that wouldn't stand with EmmaLee. As far as she was concerned, if he wanted to claim adulthood, or practicing adulthood, he really should act like one, by having a civil conversation about his distaste, instead of throwing a temper tantrum at a misunderstanding and insulting a song.
As the next song began on her radio, an older one she recognized as Swingin' by John Anderson, the pale girl reached over and clicked off the radio. Might as well turn the thing off if he was going to have such strong opinions about the music. she could end this conversation and enjoy her music elsewhere.
"An adult would be able to agree to disagree and have a civil discussion about what good music is or is not without resorting to offensive language and gestures." She said further, wrinkling her nose again. "Or at least express their displeasure without insult and I can simply apologize for the intrusion and go on my merry way."
