It's not the plane. It's the pilot. (Bradley Bradshaw in Top Gun: Maverick)

Maverick Castle corrected the position of his sunglasses. He could see no cloud in the sky this morning, the main star of the Earth was nearly blinding, but he was still in high spirits to train, albeit alone.

Last academic year, the first round of official broom racing took place in mid-October. It was mid-September today, and the part-Veela figured out he may want to start training. The upcoming round would be his very first as an official member of the Gryffindor team, and Maverick did not want to disappoint himself. Imagine the cheer he would get if he at least scored a point on his first race! That was not to mention if he got on the podium, or even won the race... he could be the Rookie of the Year.

Firebolt in his hands, the second year mounted it and kicked at the ground. They soared together, the student and his trusted broom. And as he made first a sighting lap, Maverick's mind wandered around. To be honest, the tween had no solid idea what broom racing would really be like. He knew that it was not Grand Prix, but he did not know what additional obstacles he could possibly encounter. Therefore, as he was doing a warm up lap to follow the sighting lap, he decided to train as if he was doing Motocross. It could not be very wrong, most racers trained this way.

Outdoor Club Area

Despite being here for a bit over two weeks, Rory wasn't quite used to getting up in the morning. It had always been like this - even when the boy went to Muggle school, he was much more likely to sleep in and rush in the last ten minutes to make it on time. And then only be half awake until a couple hours had passed.

Yet, here he was, after breakfast, wandering around the large outdoor area, a bit in awe. From what he had heard from others, all sorts of activities went down in this part of the Hogwarts grounds. Notably, broom racing. Rory still felt his knees wobble at even the sight of a broom; nevertheless, he was greatly intrigued by all these wizard customs. And, well, the athletes looked rather cool when they flew through the air - diving like hunting birds, narrowly dodging obstacles, making precise turns.

So when he saw a boy who looked to be, well, practicing this sport, he couldn't help but stop and watch for a little bit. Rory was rather shy, but he figured that simply watching the activity wouldn't cause any problems. This stranger looked exactly how Rory envisioned "cool" from his very limited understanding of the word - sunglasses, a leather jacket, a generally strong appearance. Not to mention that his practice was rather impressive, considering the way he confidently sped around the area.

Rory considered saying something, anything really. He could use more friends, and this boy seemed like a good connection, probably part of the popular crowd. Maybe namedropping this stranger would deter bullies, even. Not that Rory had met bullies yet, but he was convinced every school had them. But what was there to say to a stranger in this circumstance? Wow, the way you rode in circles was awesome?! The weather's good for racing today?! He wasn't exactly knowledgable about socialization or broom racing.

Eventually, Rory squeaked out a comment, "I like your broom." There were multiple reasons why saying this made him look rather foolish. Firstly, he knew nothing about brooms, and was simply making the comment because it looked pretty. Secondly, the stranger was racing at high speeds! The odds that he even heard Rory say something were low, much less that he understood it.

The short boy stood awkwardly, shrinking further into himself, considering the best plan for retreat without further embarrassing himself. Maybe he should just run away... but what if the racer remembered his face and thought he was weird?! Wow, now that invisibility cloak his father Lewis had told him about would be useful.

Maverick darted his head down as he heard someone squeak about liking his broom. If there was anything that could grab his attention in an instant, it would be admiration. He halted the Firebolt, hovering as he made a quick study of this new person. Blonde curly hair, blue eyes, light skin. Presumably a first year boy. He looked rather stupid, to be honest, but stupid people ought to be easy to impress; and for this reason Maverick made a dive and stop right in front of the stranger, mounting off his broom.

"Ain't she a beauty?" he said proudly, standing with his back straight and holding the Firebolt rather possessively. Truth be told, he was not sure if most wizards would dub their broom a she, but bikes and motorcycles were feminine nouns in Spanish and in Italian, so why shouldn't he call his broom a she? "Got this baby last Christmas, so she's brand new. Did you notice that she doesn't have even a scratch? I take good care of this broom and polish it at least once a week."

As he spoke, he changed the way he held the broom every now and then, so as to let the stranger see it from different point of views. He was sure this kid would admire the Firebolt, and then admire him. But he had to be careful, he did not want the younger pupil to think he was allowed to borrow the broom.
