cracking the shell
1st september, 2023
The last few weeks had been stressful. Jasper knew his dad wasn't too good at handling things like these, helping the kid with preparing for school. But when this came with the fact that he was now not just going to some school but a whole different world entirely (although still a school in that world,) it certainly made things a bit more complicated.
Despite all the troubles and hardships of figuring out how things work at a level decent enough to everything up to this point, he was finally here. The Hogwarts Express was standing right in front of him, looking as majestic as he expected it to. He always liked trains, and one that felt so old and powerful... it was quite a sight. He was glad they were using this instead of some silly magic where you just teleport to where you need to be, that would kill the fun of going to school for him.
His dad was still trying to tell him about how he should behave and adjust to this new world as if he knew any better how to handle this. They were both equally baffled and fascinated by the things they had seen and learned in Diagon Alley and Jasper was fairly certain his experiences were far from over, that was just a small part of what the rest of his life would be like now.
His mom, who had come for a few days to see him off as she wouldn't get to see him otherwise was also there, she was just as fascinated by everything. It was a pity she didn't get to come to Diagon Alley and see everything that was there, but he decided he'd go with her there at some point too. His mom wasn't talking too much, she'd just occasionally roll her eyes at something his dad said. Her only advice was that things would be fine and he should just enjoy things and figure it out as he went on.
He didn't disagree with either of them, but what was happening was a little bit overwhelming for the boy. He was nervous. How were things going to be there? Could he really spend all this time alone? Would he be able to make friends in a place filled with magic people who may not like him as much because he doesn't fit in as much? He tried not to let the questions weigh him down too much (not that it was hard to do that, there was plenty enough to distract him) but they still occupied some space in the back of his mind.
As they walked around the station looking at how the world of magic looked, the way people dressed in clothes that would make you look like you were in cosplay, the way they used silly wand tricks for the smallest of things, the odd things they talked about, most of which made no sense to any of the three, it was quite fascinating but also added to Jaspers anxiety.
But then people started to rush on to the express, it was nearly time for it to leave. Jasper was very nervous about getting on to the train so he did try to delay that part as much as he could but it was almost time to leave and he couldn't do that anymore. Besides, he HAD planned on getting an empty compartment so he wouldn't have to awkwardly ask to join a different one.
His dad looked at him and put a hand on his shoulder, "Well, just remember everything I told you and you should be fine."
His mom laughed, "Honestly if he can even remember half of the nonsense you told him, he's a genius." His dad did not find that amusing and scoffed a little, annoyed at the idea that his thoughts on the matter weren't insightful and important enough to remember. Jasper unfortunately agreed with his mom.
He smiled at them for a moment, before reaching out for a hug. He savored the moment as much as he could, he wasn't going to get this again for a good while. For all he knew, he'd be miserable for the rest of the year there. This was the last time he was going to feel truly safe. But then again, the train was running late and his dad pulled away soon enough, telling him to get on with it.
His mom took a while to let go, it was really the train getting ready to leave that even got her to let go at all. She let a sigh out as she watched him get on to the train. She smiled, "Dhyaan rakhna apna!" She said as the train slowly started to move.
"Ha, you too! I'll miss you both!" He said and he saw them both nod at him, but then had to move inside to let everyone else in. He sighed, it had started now, he was on his own now.
Walking through the carriage, there were a LOT of people who seemingly had already made groups and were sitting in full compartments. There were a few loners here and there but Jasper didn't have the courage to ask them to let him sit. And hey, maybe they were keeping them from someone else, right? But as he went on, he started to get worried, what if there were none of them left? What if they were all taken? Would he have to simply curl up on the floor and die? He started to get progressivly more impatient as he went through the train.
The moment he saw an empty compartment, he rushed in and shut the door behind him quickly and stood there holding the door behind him, as if he had just run from some monster and locked the door behind him. He stood there dumbfounded, his brain having forgotten to proceed to the next step.

cracking the shell
Boston wasnt nervous. she really wasnt. instead, she was bubbling with excitement, absolutely bubbling. she couldnt stop talking the entire ride to the train station, and her parents just smiled with watery eyes. her mom made her promise to send letters every week, and Boston held out her pinky because pinky promises can never be broken. she looked at her pink chipped nail polish with a frown. she had subconsciously bitten her nails and now she didnt look as out together as she had hoped. but her two french braids (which were tied up in thin white ribbon) made up for the messy nails. she got out of the car and dragged her pink bags out from the trunk. her millions of keychains made a clattering sound as her bags hit the ground. she held her dads hand to the train and talked the entire way. thats the thing about boston. she didnt think showing your parents some love was embarrassing.
when they arrived at the train, she stopped and gave her parents a bear hug. her mother spoke in Spanish and her dad just smiled. her dad wasnt much of a talker. her mother did all of the talking. "yes mama ill be safe." she gave her mom a kiss and then her dad. "dont look so sad, youll finally have some peace and quiet!!" she laughed and turned to the train . one last hug and she entered the hogwarts express.
she didnt worry about finding a seat, she just walked down the row until she found a random compartment. there was already someone inside, but she figured *who wouldnt want company?* so she knocked on the door and stepped in. "mind if i join you?"
