The Great Lake
It was a beautiful summer day. The sun shone brightly, lighting the great lake in such a way that made it appear glittery. In the cool shadow of one of the trees sat Lyrra, quietly observing the sparkling water. In her lap laid an open book. She had initially come here with the intention to read, but now that she had found this spot, the book served merely as an armrest, while the girl was enjoying the view.

It seemed that she wasn't the only one taking advantage of this nice weather on a Saturday, as there were quite a few other students outside. There were some sounds of chatter and laughter, but it felt surprisingly quiet. Although it could just be that Lyrra was too much lost in her own thoughts to notice.

The little things were what the girl enjoyed the most: The birds chirping melodic tunes and the ones flying over the lake, the brightly coloured dandelions growing between the tall grass and the soft, warm laughter of the other students enjoying their weekend. And of course, the sparkling lake that laid stretched out in front of her. Lyrra wondered what hid beneath the dark water, she reckoned it must be very deep. There would probably be some living things under there, even if it were just fish and plants. What would it feel like, to never see the sun? There might be just a little light, still able to penetrate through the dark water, but it couldn't be a lot. And not very deep. Lyrra set her book on the ground and walked closer to the lake to take a better look.

And what else could be lurking under there? Apart from normal fish, there must be something else right? Maybe something dark and sinister, like in the forbidden forest. Lyrra shuddered at the thought. Her parents had told her loads of stories, and none of them made her ever want to go there. Maybe the lake wasn't like that, since it wasn't forbidden to visit like the forest. And with all other first year students, she had even rode across it in a boat, not too long ago. But visiting, and sailing across, for that matter, was different than going in it, did people swim in the great lake? Lyrra wasn't sure and she didn't know if it was even allowed, but she knew for sure that she didn't ever want to go in there herself. The odd thing was, that with all the stories her parents, aunts and uncles used to tell, she couldn't remember being told of this place, while it seemed like such a curious and significant place. In her opinion, it should at the very least have been mentioned.

Lyrra walked back to her spot to pick up her book again and turned back the few pages that the wind had blown out of place. It was a book of fairytales that she had been gifted long ago, and read many times since. Now that a few clouds had covered the sun, the lake had stopped sparkling, and it had started to get a bit breezy, the girl finally began to read.
