Madi loved back to school shopping. It had always felt like a fresh start, like a new beginning. It also reminded her that she would be going to another year of Hogwarts very, very soon. She'd missed the castle, all of her friends, her classes, and a lot more. She had been extremely glad to be home that summer, to see her family and her Muggle friends, but now she just wanted to be back at Hogwarts. Which was why she was super happy to be in Diagon Alley that day, it felt like she was re-entering the magical world.

Madi had spent all day in Diagon Alley, getting her new robes fitted, restocking on joke products (you never knew when you would need them), going for ice cream with her family, and bouncing from store to store to find everything she needed for her upcoming school year.

Now she was in Flourish and Blotts, looking for the books she needed while her family was outside. She went around, checking titles to see if they matched the books on her list. It took a little bit, the shop had a lot of books. But she eventually found everything she needed.

After finding all of her books and paying for them, she was about to leave the store when she passed a book that caught her attention. She went to look closer at it.

It was just a few days before her second year at Hogwarts started. You couldn't say she was excited nor bored everything but it was near the excited mark probably. Thanks to all the balls, dinners, parties, and whatever kind of social gathering is known to mankind, Ara and her siblings only now had thr opportunity to get their school supplies for the year.

Now, Catherine is in her 7th year, Edmund in his 4th, Ara in her 2nd, amd little Hallie now starting her first year. Everyone split split up, Hallie could handle herself since she's been to Diagon Alley at least a dozen times.

First, Ara went to Madame Malkin to get new robes since her old ones were shorter. It was no problem. Next was Flourish and Blotts. Ara went through the doors and was greeted by the smell of books. She found her books with ease and now was just looking around to find books to read for fun. Only a few books caught her eye since she's read most of them. But one particular one caught her eye and attention just as she walked by it. She has never seen it before in Flourish and Blotts so it was quite unfamiliar. The black and white haired girl walked to it and just as she was about to grab it, she bumped into another girl. At least she was still standing up and her books were all safe and sound. What about the other girl?

As Madi went and looked closer at the book, she bumped into someone else who was leaning in to look at it. She fell backward slightly, but stepped forward and quickly regained her balance before she fell down. As a clumsy person, this was a big accomplishment to her. But when she fell backwards, all of her books went tumbling out of her arms. She moved down to the floor and started gathering them back in her arms, wishing she'd brought something to carry them in.

She looked over to see who she had bumped into. It was a girl. She was a little bit shorter than Madi and she had black hair with some white in it and dark brown eyes. She was standing upright and she hadn't dropped anything. Madi finished collecting all of her books, stood up, and apologized to the girl.

"Hey, sorry about that. I wasn't looking where I was going." she said. "My name is Madi, by the way. What's yours?" she smiled. She decided to be nice and apologize right away, not wanting an argument to happen. She'd gotten in way too many of those and was very tired of them. But she'd also met good friends that way.

The other girl's books met the floor when the two bumped into each other. Ara crouched down and started picking up the books, helping the girl who dropped them. After getting all her books, the girl introduced herself as Madi after apologizing. Ara was caught off guard because normally they would've apologized and left but instead this girl, Madi started introducing herself.

"Yea same, sorry for bumping into you." She apologized. "It's Ara, nice meeting you Madi" she also introduced herself to the girl. Madi had brown hair and eyes and was a bit taller than Ara. Ara flashed a small smile at the girl who was also smiling. She went back to her resting face quickly while checking if she dropped anything which she didn't.

"Do you want or need a bag to carry those in? I have an extra one." Ara said. She always had an extra tote bag just in case she was going to carry more than she thought. She observed that Madi maybe had too many things to hold so she dropped them when Ara bumped into her. Her other tote bag was folded up neatly and had a flower design and the words "Never Give Up" on it but unlike the one she was using, it didn't have any charms on it.

"Thank you." Madi said as the girl bent down and helped her pick up her books. She held them firmly in her arms. She really wished she'd brought a bag. She normally carried a bag wherever she went, but had forgotten it coming to Diagon Alley. It was still buried in her trunk that she hadn't unpacked fully since school let out.

She looked around at the bookstore. There were a lot of kids there shopping for school. Madi saw a lot of nervous looking first years trying to find the books they needed. She remembered when she had been looking for books with her family. The books had piled over her head, she'd gotten so many.

"It's okay. It was also partially my fault." Madi said. "Nice to meet you too, Ara." Ara smiled quickly at her and then returned to her resting face. Madi wondered if she wasn't wanting to have this conversation or was just more reserved than Madi was.

"If you wouldn't mind, that would be great, thank you." she smiled. She was surprised, she hadn't expected that, but she was really grateful. Thank goodness. She was worried she wouldn't have been able to carry them all and was scared she would drop them all more times and embarrass herself.

Ara gave Madi the tote bag as a random act of kindness. She didn't know why it was the moment but it was what it was. Normally, she would try to get out of any random conversation but Madi seemed nice enough to be worth her time socializing with. "Are you a Ravenclaw by any chance?" She asked. It was a stupid question really but she didn't know what to continue the conversation with. "You look very Ravenclaw-y" she continued awkwardly. 'Gosh Ara pull yourself together for Merlin's sake!' she scolded herself. Ara was mature most of the time but she's never really bumped into someone randomly and initiated into a conversation.

"Also, about that book, " she pointed at the book they were both looking at. "You can have it. Cause on second look, I think my cousin might have it in her library and I could just borrow it" Having a personal library in your house was a common concept for Ara especially since she was quite wealthy. Though she knew it wasn't common in most homes, she still addresses it as a casual thing.

Madi's name didn't ring a bell in Ara's encyclopedia of pure-bloods without her last name nor she has ever seen her in family gatherings so Ara assumed she was an out of society pure-blood, a normal-ish half-blood, or muggle born. The black and white haired girl often often overanalyzes people and tries to identify them as soon as humanly possible. So that she might not say anything that might be offensive to their family.

Anyways, Ara was just overthinking while everything was happening to find out who is Madi in her encyclopedia of people she knew but never met but also mentally taking note of what she looked like for the situation if she sees her again.

Ara handed Madi the tote bag, who took it. She opened it and emptied her books into it. "Thank you." she smiled and slung the bag over her shoulder. She did really need a bag, and having made the mistake of not bringing one, she was really grateful Ara had one.

Ara then guessed if Madi was a Ravenclaw. Madi smiled and she told her that she looked very Ravenclaw-y. "Yep, I'm a Ravenclaw." Madi had actually heard that she looked like a Ravenclaw a lot. It might have been that most of the time she had her nose in a book. "What are you?" she wasn't very good at guessing Houses, so instead of guessing and probably getting it wrong, she decided just to ask her.

"Really? Are you sure?" Madi asked. "Thank you!" she beamed. She was shocked that Ara's cousin had her own library and that Ara addressed it so casually, but she tried not to show her reaction. Ara was probably in one of those rich pure-blood families.

There was silence for a bit and Madi noticed Ara looking at her, almost analyzing her. It was a little awkward, and Madi had never been one for too much silence, so she decided to break it. "Are you a second year?" she asked, thinking she was. She looked about Madi's age. "Are you excited to come back to Hogwarts?"

Madi confirmed that she was a Ravenclaw, this quite proved Ara's educational guessing abilities. Madi asked what house Ara was in after she guessed hers. "Slytherin," the dual-color haired girl replied. She observed Madi a bit more, her appearance more specifically. Dark brown hair, brown eyes, above-average height, quite pale, eyeliner, a bit too happy. None of it particularly rang a bell as well like her name. The young Slytherin was certain she was most definitely not a pure-blood but she had a 50/50 on muggle-born or half-blood.

Anyways, Ara's eyes caught a book on a lower section of where the book the two girls initially saw. "Moste Potente Potions" by Phineas Bourne. The cover was normal yet peculiar at the same time. She took the book from the display and scanned it, the back and front. She decided to buy it since it was quite cheap, only about a galleon and 8 sickles.

Silence took over the two girls as Ara held the book in her hands. Madi then broke the silence, "Are you a second year? Are you excited to come back to Hogwarts?" she asked. The other was quite started but it didn't show. "I am a second year... I'm quite neutral about going back, not getting my hopes too high for anything." she shrugged. "What about you?"

Ara was quite stoked about studying unlike most, she just wanted an excuse not to do nothing and be bored all the time. But other than that, she wasn't really looking forward to anything else.

After the girl said she was a Slytherin, Madi nodded. It did make sense, for everything she'd heard about Slytherins and the few Slytherins she had met. They were pretty quiet. Most of the time, at least. Always thinking. They reminded of herself sometimes, although she was probably quite a bit more talkative.

She listened to Ara confirm she was a second-year and talk about her feelings about coming back to Hogwarts. She nodded along, although she couldn't relate much to Ara saying she was neutral about coming back. Madi was excited to be back in the magical world. Magic was a part of her that she had just discovered, and she couldn't wait to return to it. Besides, it was so much better than regular school. That was probably the one thing she didn't miss after coming to Hogwarts. "Second year too. I'm excited. Mainly to use magic again. It was hard to have a problem and then remember 'oh yeah, I can't use magic.'" she smiled. She was looking forward to her classes, and all the new spells she would learn too. And to see her friends. She also hoped everything would be easier than her first year.

"It was nice talking to you, Ara." she said. "I'd better go, though. I think I see my family." she looked outside and saw her parents and sister walking up the street toward the bookstore. "Thank you for the bag, too." she went up and paid for the books, smiled at Ara, and left.

As Mari walked away, Ara went back to buying books. There were a few new books and editions since her last visit to Diagon Alley. But first she had to buy her school books for her second year, the main reason she was even there.

She looked at the list of books she needed and walked around looking for them. The girl walked around Flourish and Blotts, spotting book after book, those of which were in her list and some that just picked up her attention. A certain book caught her attention though, one with a black cover with peculiar and intricate gold engravings that for sure said something but she didn't know what. The writings (or the things she assumed was writings) were written in something that didn't look familiar.

Ara opened the book and flipped a few pages, there were many different languages in it. Some of them she recognized as Japanese, German, and Korean. But strangely there was no English unless she would count a few annotations at the margins of the pages. The book was strange to the girl. She put it in her bag so that she'll be able to buy it later.

The girl bought a few more books that were in her list and went to the counter to pay for them. 105 galleons, not much.

She put the books in her bag and went out of the store to find Catherine who said that they'd be leaving in about 2 hours. So Ara just bought a few more things like ink, quills, a new chess set, etc. then went with her family and used the floo network to get back home.
