Irina squeezed her eyes shut, teeth clenched and body tense as she gave a muffled groan of pain. Her body was unable to move as wave after wave of agony enveloped her, removing all thought from her mind. After a few minutes, it had subsided to a dull throb, causing her head to clear enough that she could sit herself up from the floor.

It had been a classic Irina move: she had decided to climb a tree without calculating the route down before climbing up. The result had been a loud crack and a sudden, stomach lurching drop that ended in blinding pain. She had lain winded on the ground for quite a while, unable to draw enough breath to even shout for help. Finally, her breath returned and she had been able to assess her injuries.

Pulling herself against the tree, Irina sighed and leant her head back.
‘Come one, I’m smarter than this! I made the exact same mistake last year so why haven’t I learnt yet!
After silently berating herself, she grabbed a branch above her head and pulled herself up. She then took a deep breath and gingerly took a step forwards.

"Dungbombs!"

The pain was so great that her leg buckled, her body collapsing onto the ground again. She gave a loud cry as fresh waves of pain broke over her. Tears filled her eyes and she angrily brushed them away, determined to get herself out of the situation without completely losing all dignity.
‘This may be even worse that when I fell hurt my ankle last time . . . But this time I don’t have Mahlioz with me.’

Irina thought of her Slytherin friend, wishing she could be with her at this point in time. It was clear there was no way she was getting back to the castle by herself and there was only a select few she was happy to be vulnerable with or accept help from.

The sound of footsteps to her left caused Irina to look up quickly, uncomfortably aware of how spread-eagled she was on the floor.

I don't have a train of thought. I have 7 trains on 4 tracks, all narrowly avoiding each other when the paths cross, all the passengers are screaming and there's that annoyingly calm female conductors voice in the background.

Going for walks outdoors and getting some fresh air has always been one of the best methods to shake off drowsiness, according to Allen's experience so far. However, it appears that a sudden thumping sound followed by a cry of pain can be just as effective.

Full of curiosity and concern, the Hufflepuff decided to investigate the source of the noise. What he came upon was a girl, lying helplessly on the ground near a tree. Allen had no clue about how the girl ended up in that situation, but it seemed that she could really use some help.

Approaching the girl, he noticed that she had already looked up at him, leaving him with little time to decide on the best way to approach this unfamiliar person. "Umm, hi- sorry..." the boy thought that someone in pain on the ground would already be distressed, and the best course of action would be to avoid further embarrassment by asking what happened.

He bent down slightly and finally had a clear view of the other student's face. "Are you alright?" Even though he was just trying to be considerate, he soon felt a bit foolish for asking, considering the sound that had led him to her indicated that she was likely in significant pain.

With a little smile on his face to come off as friendly, he continued speaking, "Can you stand up? You can take my hand if you need to." He said while extending his hand, offering to help her up.

"Umm, hi- sorry..."
Irina's heart dropped as the boy approached. Of all the people to see her in such a helpless state, it had to be a guy. She was lying on her back, jeans ripped and hair so full of twigs she could have been a tree herself. It was not the first impression she would have liked.

Irina didn't have any problems against boys in general but it had been her experience that they often offered help cause it was cool to 'save the damsel in distress.' Someone had once called her that when she got stuck in a fence . . . she may or may not have accidentally caused his hair to go lime green. She didn't want assistance from boys as she believed she was perfectly capable of helping herself. Why grow someone's ego when you could grow your own strength?
Under normal circumstances, she would have snapped at the boy and told him to bog off, but she didn't know this guy 'and,' she thought, 'to be honest, he looks kinda sweet. First Year maybe?'

Irina pulled herself up into a sitting position as the boy bent down to look her in the eye. Her irritation cringed slightly - bending down made her feel even more helpless.
"Are you alright?"
Irina raised her eyebrow, forcing a small smile onto her face. "Yeah, just dandy, thanks for asking."She could see he already felt stupid for asking the question but she couldn't help but respond.

"Can you stand up? You can take my hand if you need to." The boy gave a small smile, so devoid of arrogance that Irina forced herself to rethink her cutting remarks. He was just trying to help.
"I'm fine," she said airily, waving a hand as she pushed herself towards the tree. "It looks worse than it is."
She once again pulled herself up by the treebranch and took a tentative step forwards. The flash of pain was sudden but expected, and she managed to stifle the small yelp. She was not however, able to stop herself from falling to the ground as once more her leg collapsed underneath her.
"Okay," sh groaned, closing her eyes, "Maybe it is as bad as it looks."

She sat up, back against the tree and opened her eyes, glancing quickly at the boy before looking away again. "I'm Irina by the way. Second Year. Sorry you had to find me in this . . . situation."

The girl lying on the ground, her appearance visibly disheveled with twigs caught in her hair, responded by assuring that she was alright. Allen was beginning to feel a twinge of guilt for excessively worrying about a stranger. "Well, that's a relief, I guess-" he managed to utter before the girl, once again, lost her balance and fell to the ground.

The Hufflepuff's green eyes widened with surprise as he witnessed her struggle to stand and then stumble down, likely experiencing considerable pain. "Ouch- be careful..." He quickly knelt down beside her, just in case she needed assistance.

However, he soon relized that he didn't know of any healing spells, and unless she agreed to let him escort her to the hospital wing, there was nothing he could do. So, he just sat there awkwardly, his face reflecting his concern. The young boy felt rather useless for not being able to do anything for the being.

That girl must be really tough, she fell down twice and yet maintains her composure enough to chat like nothing happened, he thought. "I'm Allen, it's still nice to meet you." he attempted to muster a smile despite the awkwardness of the situation.

Given that Irina had declined his previous offer of assistance, Allen chose his words more cautiously to avoid offending her in any way. "It must be painful to walk like that. Would you like me to help you go to the hospital wing?"

Irina mentally berated herself, angry that she had gotten herself into this situation. 'How hard is it to just not fall out of a tree?' She could see the concern plastered across she boy's face as he sat watching her, clearly unsure of what he should do.

"I'm Allen, it's still nice to meet you." He gave her a little smile, still unsure. Irina smiled back, a little more feebly than normal but one filled with confidence. "Nice to meet you too."
To her surprise, Irina found her irritation at the boy dwindle completely, replaced by a growing warmth - he was actually being kind of sweet. 'Oh stop it,' she thought to herself, trying to smother the feeling with scorn, 'He's probably just as pigheaded as all the other guys who try and "help me."'

"It must be painful to walk like that. Would you like me to help you go to the hospital wing?"

Irina stared at him for a moment, uncertain about how she should respond. Being helped by a guys was the last thing she wanted, but on the other hand, it was clear she could do no more than hop in the state her leg was in. And Allen really was being very friendly.
Her pride won however and she responded, "You know what, I'm gonna chill here for a while, see if a little time won't stop the pain." She knew she was wrong - she had had plenty of experience to know that an injury like this needed the Hospital Wing. But she didn't wand to say that.

"So, um. . ." She paused to think of something to say. "You're first year, right? How're you finding Hogwarts?"

Upon hearing Irina's decision to stay on the ground a little longer, Allen also sat down beside her, finding a more comfortable position with his legs crossed. "Alright, if that's what you prefer," he conceded.

The option to rise and leave her to her own devices was always available to him, yet it hadn't even crossed Allen's mind once; he simply couldn't bring himself to abandon someone in such a tough situation.

"You're first year, right? How're you finding Hogwarts?" Allen couldn't help but wonder how this girl managed to maintain her composure despite the obvious pain she was in. Perhaps it wasn't best to ask, he thought. Instead, he gave an approving nod and replied, "Things are going better than I expected. Everyone I've met so far has been very nice."

The Hufflepuff could have easily continued the conversation at length, as it was rare for someone to ask how he was doing. However, he struggled to muster the enthusiasm for casual chit-chat given the current circumstances.

"...are you sure you don't want to see the nurse right away?" Allan's last sentence may have seemed like it came out of no where. He worried that he might be coming across as bothersome and insistent by asking once more, yet he hoped that Irina wouldn't get irritated by his concern.

His kindness surprised Irina yet again as he sat down without complaint, legs crossed and face composed. "Alright, if that's what you prefer,"

As she changed the subject, asking about Hogwarts, Irina observed Allen, watching his expressions and mannerisms, listening to his tone. It was the only time she was ever observant - when meeting someone for the first time. As he answered, Allan gave a firm nod, saying, "Things are going better than I expected. Everyone I've met so far has been very nice."

Irina laughed and nodded too. "Yup, you can't find an atmosphere like this anywhere else." Irina wondered whether his ability to be so kind had something to do with being a Hufflepuff. The thought was immedietely dismissed as she reminded herself that Houses didn't limit your abilities and qualities. The other day her sister had been saying, "You, know, I don't think it's our qualities that assign us to houses, it's more the qualities we admire most in others."

Irina had pondered this for a long time, mulling over the qualities she wanted most in a friend. Connection. Loyalty. Passion. Warmth. Courage. Honesty. No wonder the Sorting Hat had had a hard choice between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff.

Irina shook her head lightly to awaken herself from her revery, noticing as she did that Allen looked very comfortable talking - maybe he enjoyed this kind of conversation.
"...are you sure you don't want to see the nurse right away?"
His tone was laced with concern again and she could see an air of worry as he asked. She looked down at her injury and gritted her teeth.
'Buckle up your pride girly. You need his help and you know it.'
She looked up with a grimace. "Alright then. Might as well get it over with." She paused again as she got ready to pull herself up, eyes closed as she braced herself for yet another knock to her pride.
"Allen, I - I reckon I'm gonna need some help getting up . . . and walking . . . and then getting to the Hospital Wing. So, errrrm - could I have some help? Please," she added hastily.
