Just Breathe Closed

'Breathe, Maeve, just breathe,' Maeve thought, trying to hold back her tears. 'It's not that big of a deal, no ones cares, stop bothering everyone, waste, waste, waste. Just breathe.'

Still, she couldn't hold back the wave of tears. They streamed down her face as she choked back sobs. Maeve didn't want to be a bother. Gods knew she was enough of one already.

"Benjamin and Dahlia don't care..." She whispered to herself. "Alexander hasn't once tried to see me..." Maeve let out a harsh sob. "Mother is disappointed in me... Father wants me to follow in his footsteps... No one cares... Waste... Waste... Bother..."

She was sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall with her knees pulled to her chest. Maeve was shaking like a leaf. She needed a calming drought, but she couldn't bring herself to walk down the halls in her current state. It'd be far too embarrassing to push through the crowd of students.

She was a mess. Her hair was tangled. Her eyes were red from crying. Her cheeks were splotchy. She couldn't stop shaking.

And the same words continued to ring through her head. 'Bother... waste... unneeded... brat... nuisance..." They were the words her mother often used to scold her. They were the words her mother had put it her letter. They were the words that haunted Maeve's life. And she couldn't escape them.

"I'm done!" Maeve screamed. Her cheeks flushed when she realized how loud she'd been. Had someone heard? She hoped not. She wouldn't be able to bear it if someone knew what a wreck she was. But still... maybe someone could help?

Aera was lost. Again.

It didn’t matter how many times she’d been in a place; the fact that she could never navigate a humongous place on her own stands true. Though, this time, it wasn’t necessarily bad that she was lost. After all, Aera decided that getting a first hand experience of the castle was what would help her familiarize herself with her surroundings.

Looking around, the corridor seemed emptier than all the other ones Aera’s walked through before. She wondered why; it was only the second floor, after all.

At least, she thought it was the second floor.

Shaking her head, Aera decided to keep moving and started to walk when she heard a scream coming from one of the rooms. It sounded angry; maybe even with a hint of sadness.

Curiosity piqued, Aera decided to investigate the source. It wasn’t her best quality, she admitted, but maybe it was someone needing some assistance. Maybe even a ghost! Oh, that would be rather thrilling, indeed. The mere thought of contact with the supernatural filled her with excitement.

Instead what she found was a girl alone in what they called the “abandoned toilets,” where Moaning Myrtle supposedly wanders. She wondered what had happened.

Are you alright?” Aera never knew how to help others when they were in emotional distress. She wasn’t much for showing them either, but her morality prevented her from simply leaving the poor girl alone.

Maeve winced when she heard the girl's voice. Of course she had attracted attention. A scream would do that for you.

'Breathe... She doesn't want to hear about your problems... stop crying... Just breathe...' She told herself.

"I'm fine," Maeve lied. She groaned inwardly at how weak the lie sounded. "I... er... Well, I really... I really am fine. I just so-someti-sometimes have these... have these issues. It's nothing I can't work th-through myself." Yet another weak lie. She could almost feel herself slipping away.

It was a nice thought, disappearing. If it meant no more Mother, Father, Dahlia, Benjamin, Alexander, or pain, she would do it. But, she knew they wouldn't approve. Maeve had a need to listen to rules. A need to be ordered. It was awful, but she'd never be able to escape it.

She had thought that Hogwarts would free her of this burden. It didn't. In fact, it made everything much, much worse. She was stressed and anxious. It didn't help that she had recurring nightmares, of her peers and family taunting her. Maeve often woke up sobbing and clutching her tattered copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

It was strange that a book could be so calming, but it was. It reminded her of her little farm at home, and of Glaedr, her kneazle.

Aera could easily see through the lies the Slytherin were tossing her way; it's not like the girl was doing a very good job at trying to convince her, either.

"There's no point in lying to me, you know." Maybe it was a bit insensitive of her, even harsh, but it was true. Aera had always been a good liar when it came to hiding her emotions, and so detecting it from others is a small feat.

Not wanting to scare or alarm the other girl, Aera softly closed the door behind her before sitting down adjacent the Slytherin cross-legged. "My name's Aera," She began. Maybe talking would ease her mind. Aera remembers when her mother would constantly check up on her after Valentin, her brother, had departed for Hogwarts three years ago. He was the closest to her as far as people close to her age were concerned. Her father, though not knowing his appearance, she knew was very protective of their name and so home-schooling was necessary. To learn proper mannerisms, blah blah...

Snapping back to reality, Aera looked at the Slytherin's face and smiled. "There's a lot going on your head, right? It's fine if you don't want to tell me; I am, after all, a stranger. Just know that you're not so alone in this school."

Maeve nodded. "I... I am Maeve," She said reluctantly. "And thank you. For... For coming along, I suppose."

She didn't want to talk. Not now, not ever. But she knew it would be easier to talk to this stranger than anyone else. They already knew too much about her. Aera knew nothing. Nothing except her name.

"Their voices..." She whispered. "Their voices yell at me. F-Fai-Failure... Waste... Bo-bother... I am a... I am a waste to them. In my head and in this world." Maeve's voice was hardly audible, but she was sure Aera could hear her.

"My mother, father, Dahlia.... Dahlia, Benja-Benjamin, Alexander... Family.... Everyone... They... I'm not wa-wanted," Maeve murmured, tears slipping down her cheeks. Now that she said it aloud, it seemed all too true.

She was an outcast. An outcast in her own family. The black sheep. The Sirius Black of the Turners.

It stung.

"I'm sorry.... I shouldn't... I shouldn't b-bur-burden others with my problems. My mother says... Mother says I needn't bore e-ever-everyone." Maeve said quickly, squeezing her eyes shut. She hated being this vulnerable in front of a person. Usually her creatures were the only ones who saw her like this.

Maeve was more comfortable around dangerous animals than her own family.

She realized that that was a problem. One she shouldn't deal with alone.
