I stepped out onto my front porch. The hot, humid weather washed over my skin. We had been in Spain for a few I nervously got into the back of the car. The date was July 27th and there was a family gathering for the Garcia family. This wasn’t the first I’ve attended but the first one I’ve attended I didn’t remember a thing that happened. It was a pretty long time ago.
We pulled up to the location where the gathering would be. It was a large manor. I walked in with my family. My parents went with some close relatives to chat about adult stuff. Leaving me by myself wandering around the manor. Nobody knew me and I knew nobody. Even if someone did it would have been years since we’ve seen in flesh. I just stared around the manor. I thought I saw a painting move but it must’ve been the direction of the light. I mama had said to go play with the other children my age. I had seen a few kids but most were either too little or too old. I see a big group of kids together, it looked like they all knew each other. Most relatives lived in Spain or Africa. I see a kid slightly bigger than me by himself. He was the closest person to my age.
I went up to him and said, “Hola! Me llamo Alejandro, y tu? Hello! My name is Alejandro, and yours?

Reuben was not sure how the family gathering would go. He had not been to many, but was pretty sure that it just involved judgy elders looking at him and giving him the "look". They seemed to get irritated when Reuben said as much as a word about something and it made him wonder if it was actually something wrong with him.
This was probably why he decided to join the kids' group instead of sticking to his parents. He did not really know anyone from here, but talking to them did not seem too hard and soon enough, Reuben found himself playing with them and having quite a lot of fun.
That was when he noticed a boy walking towards him. The boy introduced himself as Alejandro in Spanish. He seemed slightly younger than Reuben, but he must have been really confident to approach him like that. "Soy Rueben, encantado de conocerte!" I'm Reuben, nice to meet you!, he said giving the boy a kind smile.
Reuben had never heard of Alejandro before, but again, their family seemed to be quite large, so it was not a surprise that he had met someone new. The only thing that surprised him was that he had never seen this boy on the previous gatherings. Or he had, but didn't remember it. In any case, he had met him now, and wanted to turn it into a long-lasting friendship, if nothing else.

Another reason was to avoid all the elders talking in the living room. As to not be forced to make conversation with them by my parents and pestered by all the adults.
"Soy Rueben, encantado de conocerte!" I'm Reuben, nice to meet you! introduced the boy.
He had medium length brown hair and blue eyes. I've never seen Reuben before on previous gatherings before or maybe I did, I just don't remember. All I could remember in the previous gatherings I've been to was mama feeding me with a spoon and me spitting it out. I must've been very little. All the others thing were all just a blur.
"Hi Reuben, nice to meet you too." I replied.
After that I didn't really know how to continue the conversation and not making things awkward for us. I wanted to join the other kids playing but I didn't know how to start. So I just turned back to Reuben and tried to make conversation.
"Don't you just hate when all those old people just look at you funnily for no reason." I asked.
