Sometimes having a step-family came in quite handy.
When Lavender lived alone with Mum, it had been hard to sneak out, even though the elder woman was often busy with one of her many jobs. Perhaps she could have managed, but she had little reason to sneak off anyway.
Now things were quite different. Lavender had both the means and motive to leave without being noticed. With Paul and his daughter to keep Mum busy, sneaking out was a breeze, and Lavender could wander North London relatively freely without explanation.
Sometimes she liked to see what the nearby shops had to offer, but she rarely bought anything. Even if her family now had money, she still didn't feel very comfortable spending it. Old habits died hard.
When she wasn't window shopping, Lavender liked to come round to a local pub owned by a man named Arnie. His was one of the few pubs that allowed unaccompanied children, and he even stocked her favorite strawberry milk.
Lavender rarely had a destination in mind when she left hers. It usually came to her in the moment. This time, it was different. This time, she'd decided to head to King's Cross Station, and she'd done so with purpose.
After receiving her acceptance letter from this new school (Hogwarts, apparently) something had bothered her. The letter had told her to report to Platform "Nine-And-Three-Quarters," and that was completely ridiculous. That was completely impossible, but Lavender had to see the impossibility for herself.
Platform Nine made sense, and Platform Ten made sense, but there were no platforms between the two. There couldn't be.
As she walked through King's Cross, Lavender watched the crowds around her. Every time she saw someone her own age, part of her wondered if they, too, were here for the same reason that she was.
As she got closer and closer to Platform Nine, she began walking faster, and eventually found herself running and weaving through the crowds of people.
Eventually, the breath was knocked from her chest as she collided with a figure and fell face-first onto the ground. She sat up and tried to catch her breath.
"God," she panted, looking to the other person. "You alright?"

| Xin had sneaked out of her apartment again. For the millionth time perhaps. Things weren’t going well at home. Since the acceptance letter, that pathetic excuse of a woman had somehow convinced her nearly as stupid father that her daughter was a freak. A freak that should have been sent to an orphanage ages ago. Which was why mother and father were arguing again, their angry voices carrying down the hall. It had been easy escaping the dreadful atmosphere that hung around in their apartment. With Chen there to distract her parents for at least ten minutes - not that they need it though - the girl could easily jump from the second floor to land safely on the ground, with the help of a rubber cord of course. Father didn’t know anything about the hidden ‘pathway’, nor did that Carter woman, considering they’ve only got the brains of an ostrich, apparently. As she wandered along the stone pavements, Xin began to ponder a question that had been constantly on her mind lately. On the letter it did say Platform 9 and 3/4, but that didn’t make any sense at all! Xin was quite familiar with the London train station, and was more than sure there was no other platform between 9 and 10. “Perhaps they built another one,” she thought and broke into a run destined for the train station. “It might be a good idea to at least, see it’s location.” Ten minutes later, the girl arrived at the entrance, cheeks glowing red and panting for breath. But there wasn’t any time for rest, Xin wanted to solve the puzzle as soon as possible, which meant now. Ignoring the signs that read ‘No running’, she pelted towards platform 9 and - CRASH! Xin felt the breath knocked out of her as she landed face down onto the cold pavement. She must have ran into somebody and god knows what happened next! “You alright?” It was a girl’s voice, and as Xin lifted herself up painfully, she saw shades of lavender swinging back and forth. Upon a closer look, she made out a girl with lavender hair and an even lavender-er outfit. Talk about lavender. “I’m good,” she moaned and she pulled herself up from the ground, “Not in my best state, but good nonetheless.” | ||

Lavender stood, dusting the dirt from her clothes. That wouldn't do at all. This hoodie was one of her favorites, and she couldn't bear seeing it too dirty. Maybe they would learn spells to handle the washing when she went to that school? That would be nice, she supposed.
She watched the victim of her unfortunate excitement rising from her own fall.
"That was quite the impact," Lavender said with an appraising whistle. "I didn't mean to knock you over like that, but I was looking for -"
What was she looking for? She couldn't tell this girl that she was looking for some mysterious, apparently non-existent platform at the bustling King's Cross, could she? She'd be sent away to the looney bin, sure as the sun rises. She cleared her throat.
"Sorry," she said. "I misspoke. I was just looking 'round, you know? Loads to explore here at good ol' King's Cross, especially without adult supervision."
Lavender paused, glancing around for any adults that looked like they might be looking for this other girl. When she was satisfied that the girl's parents didn't seem to be about, she smiled wryly.
"It seems you understand that well enough though, right?" she asked with a faux-casual tone.
Grinning, she offered her hand for a proper handshake.
"My name's Lavender, by the way."
